  1. My surgeon told me to crush them and put them in a spoonful of applesauce until I'm a little further out from surgery then she has no problems with me swallowing them. She did say to break larger pills in half or in 4ths if I really had to later on. If you're really concerned about it I would ask your surgeon about that possibility. Also, most of the time if a medication isn't a CR, XR, ER, XL, etc you can crush it or break it. The ones that end with those abbreviations you normally can't because it'll break the time release.
  2. Yes. I felt that way for a good week or so after my surgery. I'm 3 weeks out now and painwise I barely feel any unless I twist the wrong way and feel it at the port site. It hurt me to do ANYTHING. Are you crushing your pain pill? Also get some chewable gas-x and chew them really well or some gas-x strips. They do work. Make sure you're getting in enough fluids too, I was readmitted 3 days after my surgery for dehydration. It does get better!

    Drinking with straws?

My doctor said it's a no-no for me too. However, there's no way I'm going out to a restaurant and not using a straw. That just grosses me out.

    uh oh not sugar free

I'm eating those same popsicles right now. I personally think it's fine and I talked to the nurse who runs the bariatric program at the hospital where I had my surgery and she said something like staying under 10g of sugar for band patients was fine. I don't know if every surgeon/program says that though.
  5. I'm having issues getting in much protein at all. I'm drinking carnation instant breakfast with 8oz of milk once a day and that's it. I've never tolerated milk very well and I HATE chocolate and can't find the no sugar added vanilla carnation. Anyway, I've tried Isopure and Unjury and some different protein shakes and I despise them all. I feel like with protein powder and protein shakes I might as well be taking a bite out of the living room rug. Does anyone have any other suggestions for getting in protein during the full liquid phase?

Why did my feet get smaller?

lol it's funny because I have 2 different feet. One looks exactly like my mom's and one exactly like my dad's. My mom has feet feet my dad has skinny feet. My fat foot is losing the weight, my other foot looks the same. I also noticed that the pain I had in my feet for the last few months is GONE. I thought for sure I had stress fractures in the sides of my feet that hurt every time I took a step. I guess the extra 25 lbs was killing my feet.

Why did my feet get smaller?

LOL I just noticed the same thing. I was banded on 1/6 and I've lost like 25 lbs and my new shoes I got for Christmas and only wore once aren't tight anymore and my old broken in shoes are falling off my feet.

    Full liquids and protein?

Ugh my mom uses unflavored unjury and I'm sorry but it is NOT unflavored. I can't even stand the smell of any protein things. I think I'm giving up on this whole protein thing until they let me eat solid foods again.

    Full liquids and protein?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried almost all of these and I hate everything. They're all just disgusting to me. I'm hardly getting any protein at all and the only thing my Dr's office has to say is "oh you have to acquire a taste for it." I want to scream.

    Voltaren ?

They gave me dilaudid in a pain pump at the hospital and dilaudid tablets to crush and take at home. My surgeon normally gives tylenol w/ codeine or liquid lortab or liquid vicodin. To be honest with you though, the pain meds didn't help the type of pain I was having past the second day.
  11. It does get a lot easier. I couldn't get enough fluid in at all for the first few days. I ended up back in the hospital for dehydration 3 days post op. I'm 9 days out now and I'm drinking pretty normally again.
  12. I seem to be very alert when I wake up. I hate the oxygen masks they make me feel like I'm dying. I took that and threw it to the ground when I woke up. I also felt like I had an elephant on my chest and I was yelling "get it out of me! I want it out!" then they told me there was nothing in me and I told them they were ****ing morons and there was a lapband in me. I kept screaming and got really mad when they told me to be quiet because there were other people in recovery. I told them exactly what to do to themselves then they took me to my room. Then this pulmonary guy came in to show me how to inhale with the stupid thing they make you breathe in and out of. I was like look buddy I know how to inhale. He said he was surprised I was so awake and alert and I told him that was nice and to get the hell out of my room. LOL I was so annoyed by the number of people that had to be around me.

    Voltaren ?

I would talk to your surgeon and see what they say. The reason you're not supposed to have voltaren is because it's an NSAID like motrin and aleve. Those medications are harsh on the stomach and can cause bleeding.

    Painful Back-to-Work Experience

haha I feel like I'm stalking your threads. I'm a pharmacy tech too! I feel better now that I don't have a job to go back to right now. I probably would've done exactly the same thing you did.
  15. Oh I also wanted to say if you need to talk to someone about your grandmother or anything like that you can PM me whenever you want. :sneaky:
  16. First, I'm really sorry about your grandmother. I just lost mine in December and I still struggle with it every day. For me the pain 3 days out was some of the worst pain I had with mine. I was readmitted to the hospital that day for dehydration also. I had never had abdominal surgery before and clearly underestimated the pain I was going to be in. I'm 8 days out today and doing the best so far. I think if you know your body well enough to know that you'll be fine you should go ahead with it. If you're questioning it a lot in your head I would say to postpone a few days.

    Inconvenience of Big Incision Site

Do you have the desks that are attached to the chairs? They have those in some of my classes but I can't sit in them. Way too fat for that!

    Full liquids and protein?

Those are probably more my style from what you've described. I'm gonna check around and see if I can find them around here.

    Full liquids and protein?

LOL I'm like so scared to try anything else. Everything I've tried so far has been so disgusting I had to spit it back out. I'm an extremely picky eater, I guess I'm a picky drinker too!

    Worries about my employer

To add to what restlessmonkey said, you can always tell her you've been having stomach pain and they're doing an exploratory laparotomy to find out what may be causing it.
  21. I was banded on the 6th and I'm doing better now than I was. I don't think I was ready for the amount of pain and weird things that would happen post op as all the hospital staff and nurses told me it was "virtually painless". They lied! I was 318 lbs before the preop diet. I've lost about 20 lbs. I need a new scale, mine varies in weight depending on where it's sitting on the floor. LOL

    Inconvenience of Big Incision Site

Oh no! I start back next week and I never even thought of that happening.
  23. I just started having the same exact thing happen and I'm one week out today. It really sucks and really hurts. Mine is closer to my right breast though.

    staying hydrated?

I don't really have an answer as I'm 6 days out from banding but I'm interested in seeing the answers. This is going to be my downfall. I'm so used to guzzling a drink when I eat I'm not sure how I'm going to handle not drinking and eating.

2 days post op - feeling terrible

I still feel absolutely crazy. I told all the doctors who saw me about the pain I feel and they all looked at me like I have 5 heads. They told me to use some ibuprofen too but I'm not going to, too scared of my stomach starting to bleed. I'm incredibly paranoid about anything bad happening. I've never had abdominal surgery before and I don't think I ever will again.
