Vitamin D deficient and anemic. Yikes
HotMama24 replied to nymoosic's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I would love to know where you get your information from, because you are sadly mistaken. Artificial light from tanning beds mirrors that of the sun. It is the same. The difference? You can control it's exposure by the time. There are so many things that can alter the amount of UVA and UVB rays from the sun (weather, time of day, location etc.) which is why it is safer to get light from a bed. As you said, where you are from, the sun is strong, which makes sense why you have to be more sun conscious. If artificial lights are so dangerous, why would one receive "light therapy" for things like Vitamin D deficiency or for babies who have jaundice, it is the same thing. And if your eyes are well protected, as they should be from tanning bulbs or the sun, then you have no problem. Also, as far as the cancer being removed, you are thinking of Basal cell carcinoma, not melanoma. Basal Cell is the least deadly and much more common, malignant melanoma is the most deadly and also least common, there is a big difference in these cancers and how deadly they are. I also want to emphasize again that it is OVEREXPOSURE that causes skin damage, not simply exposure. Look up any medical website, it will tell you the same thing. -

I do want to verfiy that you can get Vitamin D from tanning salons, its acutally much safer than getting it from the sun (especially in the summer) since you can control the exact amount of exposure. There are so many things that can alter the exposure you get from the sun that it isn't perdicable. UVB produces Vitamin D and tanning bulbs produce UVB just like the sun. Just a little heads up :cursing: -
I called my insurance today... I have been stalking them all last week, and apparently it has been approved since the 20th, the lady I talked to didn't know what she was talking aobut! Ok... so now... I am terrified. LOL I don't know why, I expected to be approved and now I am scared. LOL I'm such a nut job!

Craziest Things People Have Said Coming From Under General Anesthesia...
HotMama24 replied to kabeerah's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I really don't remember much about waking up from the few times I have been under. I usually wake up upset, thirsty, sick ect...not fun. But my DH, lol, we had a fun time with his wisdom teeth. I dropped him off at the oral sugerons, I went to run and get his perscriptions while he was in surgery, it took a little while and they got done with his surgery pretty fast so they called me to come get him. I came back, he was totally out of it, we got him in the car and headed home. On the way home he pulls out this NASTY ziploc bag with 4 bloody teeth in it. I was like WTF, he said the doctor let him keep his teeth. I was like seriously??? lol, why would they do that? He said that he had asked for them, haha. So on the way home on the freeway, he proceeded to show EVERY car we passed his nasty bloody bag of teeth. I had to stop for gas too, I tried to tell him to be quiet but the person pumping gas next to us got an ear and an eye full. Needless to say, its a humerous memory -

It is really exciting to see this post from a few months ago where you talked about wanting to loose 25 more lbs to be at your goal weight in 12-18 months and now you are 2 lbs from it in less time too! You are such an inspiration!! -

The best way to get Vitamin d? GO TANNING!! It has can give you more vitamin d than suppliments can. The sun does the same thing, but seeing as it is winter it isn't as abundant...and you can't control the sun (leaving you be possibly be overexposed) you can get a sufficent amount of vitamin d by going tanning 3-4 minutes a day 3-4 times a week. You can go more and get some color too  And before people attack me about the whole skin cancer thing... you get skin cancer from overexposure (burning) not from tanning. Actually, the most deadly types of skin cancer are from underexposure  Anyway.... get some color -
Has anyone done this? I am like 10 lbs shy of my insurance covering it. I don't have co-morbities that will cover it, and I think waiting around for them is not a good idea. I have pre-diabetes and moderatly high bp, pcos and some others, but nothing that they consider a reason. Has anyone tried to gain weight to get it approved? You can PM me if you don't want to post it pubically. Thanks

Put on weight for insurance to approve surgery?

Thanks for your advice everyone! I ended up eating what I could then using weights. I bent down when she was measuring me, and she ended up fudging my height anyway to make it work, she said she didn't see the point because I was so close. Then, I excused myself after and took the weights off. All was well  I assume I will be approved because depending on if she said for my height I either will be listed as a 41 or 42 bmi, I think I am acutally a 37 something. Thanks for your help guys!! -

United Health Care- Need only doctor recommendation?
HotMama24 posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
My husband called UHC for me today to get information about them covering my WLS. The representive told him, after reviewing our plan, that they just needed a doctors letter saying that it was medically necessary. Is this common? This just seems TOO easy. We didn't know if we would be able to have it covered because my BMI is 35.4 and my only co-morbidities are PCOS and infertility. Any thoughts? -

United Health Care- Need only doctor recommendation?
HotMama24 replied to HotMama24's topic in Insurance & Financing
Ok, isn't morbid obesity 40 and above? My BMI is only 35.4. It says in my plan that for morbid obesity it is covered. I am a little unsure because my BMI is only over 35, not 40. -

Thanks for your response. It is nice to have an answer from someone who works on the other side of this. So would you recommend for me to call a surgeon and have their office call the insurance company? Is that the best way to go about it? Thanks! -
I was reading some old posts and saw that there was a problem with Dr. Spivak and United Health Care. I read that he was having people pay $5000 ahead of time? Is that still the case? The post was from early 2006. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Yes I am! I hope that i can make this work with the PCOS/infertility. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
-
Hey all! I know I am bringing back a really old thread, but I wanted to know if the insurance problems with UHC and Dr Spivak had been solved. Can anyone shine some light on that!
-
Is PCOS considered a co-morbid condition? My insurance will cover the LAP-BAND® surgery 100% if I have a BMI over 40, or 35 with a co-morbid condition. I have PCOS and my BMI is 35.4. Does anyone have any experience with this? I have United Health Care.

Co-Morbid Insurance Question
HotMama24 replied to HotMama24's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks so much for the information. I acutally have blood work done regularly with my Endocronoligist, I am insulin resistant (due to the PCOS) but I'm not diabetic, and I have an irregular heartbeat with trace leakage, but nothing I have to take meds for. My cholesterol is great too... BOOO lol, hopefully I can still get it approved! -
I have to second the injectables, got preggo the first cycle I now I have a healthy 6 1/2 month old baby boy I was diagnosed when I went to my OB about not getting pregnant. We tried for our first for a year and I think that was pure luck. We tried for 15 months for our second and went to treatments. Luckily our insurance covered the whole thing, I am HOPING the same for the LAP-BAND®. I have United Health Care...did your insurance consider PCOS a co-morbid disease?
