How will I know that it will work this time...?
rachelbknox posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hey Everyone!! I can't remember if I posted this or not...but if not here goes. I know I kept thinking that I would post it. I have tried every diet in the world and had some success only to loss will power and gain it back. I want to know why the band worked for you when all others failed? What made you stay motivated this time and not cheat? My husband has always been very supportive of my weight loss efforts and has sat back quietly as I have spent thousands of dollars on weight loss programs and diets. Each time I started a new program, I told him this was "the one" that would work. He is very scared about me trying another diet. He asked me why I felt this one would work. I didn't know how to answer him. I just am so scared of failing again. Please help me. :think -
Posterchild - Lacy mention something about paying a $2500 fee for all of the pre surgery stuff. Can you tell me about this? How long did it take you to get the date from start to finish. Rachel

Hello everyone...HELP... I am getting really discouraged with all I am reading online about PCOS. I have PCOS and guess what? I am obese!!! Go figure!!! I have been reading about how hard it is to lose weight with PCOS. I always have been able to lose weight pretty well (just didn't stick to it long enough before all the "evil" foods started to jump back into my mouth) It wasn't until recently (trying to get pregnant) that I had trouble losing and keeping weight off. I was wondering if being on the pill helps lose weight? I am on 2000 mg of Metformin a day. Don't get me wrong, I do eat some of the wrong foods on occasion but they didn't use to affect me this bad, this fast! I might gain a pound or so but now I am shooting up like 5 pounds in no time. I am trying to decide if lap band will be effective for me or if RNY is more effective for PCOS people!! This stresses me out!! I am going to the information seminar next week and they are already pushing RNY on me. From what I hear from others they push RNY on everyone. I have a BMI 42. Any advice will be greatly appreciated

PCOS....Does the surgery really help?
rachelbknox replied to rachelbknox's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
OK dumb question.... How does the lapband reduce the amount of carbs that you eat. It still allows you to eat carbs unless you are referring to the decreased amount of food that you are eating. I know that RNY will not allow your body to tolerate sugar. I wish you the best of luck with your banding. I hope all goes well. -
PCOS....Does the surgery really help?

I need to lose about 80-90 lbs. I am scared to death of RNY but I don't want to get discouraged with a slow loss that may result from the band with my PCOS and insulin resistance. Tell me please if you don't mind, why did the band work for you when all other diets have failed? -
Poster....how are you doing? What kind of pre-op diet did you have to follow for lap band with Dr. Bour. I think I will just have to be stubborn about the whole deal and tell them it is my way or the highway. Besides....my insurance is paying the bill (I hope)...it should be my choice how they pay it. Anita...I am hoping to attend this next session that is coming up in June.

I guess I need to read the post before I reply. Yes, I noticed a lot that he pushes bypass. I often wondered if that is because the bypass costs sbout $10,000 more. That extra might pay his house payment for the month. :nervous I finally managed to squeeze it out of "LACY" that the reason he doesn't push band is because it takes more follow through (fills, etc) and most patients don't follow through. I am thinking ONLY of band and I expressed that to Lacy on the phone. She said for me to keep an open mind but I don't think you could convince me to go with bypass with all the risks. I have talked to one person on here that had the band with Dr. Bour and she said that you just have to stick to your guns. The band is easy to cheat with but I think it is better than rearranging your guts like bypass. Take care....lets stay in touch.

Hey!! I too am researching lap band surgery with Dr. Bour. Just wondering if you are getting the same response as me...are they pushing bypass on you. They seem to think that is the way to go!!! Let's stay in touch. have you attended the information session?

Yep...Glad to see someone local!! -
HOWDEEE Ya'll... I have really enjoyed reading this board and getting information about lap band surgery. I am seriously considering this surgery and am attending the info session with my doctor here in SC. I am trying a couple more rounds of fertility meds (which make the scale climb...gotta love those hormones....:rolleyes ) and then Lap Band and Adoption are ON!!! Anyway got a couple of questions...mainly just need some advice. So here goes.... 1.) I already have GERD and take protonix (40mg a day) along with over the counter stuff when I eat spicy!!! Not sure exactly what is causing the Reflux other than my weight. Several doctors said that I could have a weak LES muscle but no way to check. However, most doctor's think it is the weight like everything else that is wrong with me. Anyway...will Lap band make it worse. I read somewhere that if you have reflux that you should have Bypass...but I am not real sure about that at all!! 2.) I have tried so many diets and have spent so much money on diet pills, plans, and miraclre treatments. Nothing worked!! And none of it worked because I didn't change my less than perfect eating habits. I get motivated for about 6 weeks and then well...life happens. How do I know that this will be a success? I also suffer from PCOS which makes the weight come off very slowly. This contributes to my frustrations. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

But what made this one work for you unlike the others. I am just scared to death of failure. I think I can do it but I thought I could do the others too. Maybe having a "tool" that will keep me from eating too much of the good stuff would be helpful. We eat pretty healthy minus the ocassional treat...I just eat too much of the good stuff. Thanks for your reply. -
The biggest reason why I'm glad I got a band rather than RNY
rachelbknox replied to vluckey's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks so much for your reply. I agree with you about the plumbing issue!!! Yes, my doctor has discussed with me about insulin resistance. I am going in tomorrow for a Glucose Tolerance Test. I have been on Metformin but no ovulation. Gonna try a few more fertility options...shots, clomid, etc. If no luck in a few months (when insurance stops paying) gonna go for banding and adoption!! Thanks again and good luck with your banding. -

Thank you so much to all of you that posted. I am so glad to read this. I am considering Lap Band. I have 80-90 lbs to lose and I am considering lap band. However, my dcotor keeps pushing RNY. I am beginning to think it's because he can get more money out of my insurance!! I don't want the body alterations that come with the bypass!!! My husband is scared to death of bypass (after attending the seminar) but is more tolerate of the Lap Band. Oh...Another thing....they said at this clinic that Bypass will cure infertility (another struggle of mine) in 90% of patients. But, they said they have seen no increase in fertility among those who had lap band. Huh? My Repro Endo said ANY weight loss increases chances of ferility!! I suffer from PCOS which responds well to weight loss. What is up with them. They kept telling me I wouldn't lose but 50% of my excess weight, but I see so many people losing more on here! HELP....
