  1. So how are you? Did that last fill continue to work for you?

I actually gained! 5lbs.... some is water weight comes and goes cyclically but some is my not eating as well as I was. I only have 1.5cc in my band, so there's lots of room to go and I've just got to make it down to see my doc soon.

Both of us appear to be moving away from using this site but I'd love to keep in touch outside of it. My exmail is sxmurin@gmail.com if you want to drop me a line sometime.

    alcohol

I'm from the 'everything in moderation' camp. I did my post-op recuperation at the home of a dear friend who is also a fan of fine wines... so I decided very early on that white wine was a clear liquid and I could have half a glass (as in 2oz) a day while I was on a clear liquid diet. Worked for me, though I know there will be critics. I am way too old to drink to point of hangover... some lessons learned in one's youth stick with you. Since I had my band, 4 months ago, I have never had more than a single glass of wine in a day. It does seem to affect me a little more.
  3. On my busy days I keep a baggie of almonds in my pocket. They're easy to eat, can eat them pretty quickly, and it doesn't take too many of them to keep you satisfied for quite a while. I had a handful for breakfast and it didn't dawn on me until 2pm today that I'd had nothing to eat for 6 hrs.

    Non-Scale Victories Thread

Now wearing my old size 12 hipster jeans... and they're a little loose. Even my teenage daughter said 'mom, you look fantastic' (compliments from teen rare as hens teeth). Perhaps the strangest NSV is that I want to go running! It's been years since I ran or wanted to run (10 years ago I used to run 5 miles a day). I ran 3 days in a row this week... only 2 miles each time but still... to get up early in the morning and want to do it is incredible. The band and the weight loss success and the compliments and self confidence all together are life changing. I'm one happy camper.
  5. Sounds very strange to me. I presume you had some sort of a non-invasive test (such as a stress test). All that can do is suggest there might be a blockage. Until they do either a special cardiac CT or catheterization they can't know for sure there's a blockage, and can't know for sure that the best way to fix it is angioplasty (vs doing nothing, doing a stent, or doing surgery). If you do need an intervention, the surgeon will probably want to wait several months, as you will be on medications that increase your bleeding risk. It is highly unusual for a woman in your age group to have coronary artery disease. I'd ask a lot of questions, check in with my PCP, and consider a second opinion. Best of luck.

Do you keep your 'fat' clothes?

I can't get rid of them fast enough!! I have been going through my closet pretty ruthlessly every few weeks. I don't plan to ever fit in those things again, so have no desire to keep them around as reminders. I took one full length 'before' picture, and that'll do as a reminder of my pre-band size. I'm fortunate in that I did keep my good quality smaller size stuff as I moved up in weight, so now I 'closet shop' by finding stuff in my closet that I hadn't worn for years that now fits again! (Patting self on back for buying classic things that don't go out of style!) I'm down two sizes and haven't had to buy very much yet, but am looking forward to shopping when I'm a size or two smaller still (goal).

    Flying abroad, anyone have issues

I just went back and forth to Nairobi, 9600 miles each way. I chose not to have a fill (I was due for one) before the trip. I was maybe slightly tighter, but barely noticeable.

    Who Rewired My Tastebuds?

Yes, this has been a wonderful and unexpected effect of the band. I was thinking about it just yesterday as I grocery shopped. I am much more drawn to healthy foods, much less drawn to junk. I look at sweets and think 'nah, don't want it' . Yogurt and Soups are some of my favorite meals now, when I never would have chosen them before (I'm not too tight, I can eat anything, I'm not choosing them because they're soft). My grocery cart looked SO different than it used to, because what I now want to eat is so different, and in a great way. I had a friend ask me the other day if I 'hated not being able to eat'. I had to explain that I CAN eat anything I want, but the wanting has really changed. I feel like I now eat like a thin person; I don't think about food all the time, I never feel desperate for food, I don't eat when I'm not hungry just because some food is in front of me that I like, etc etc. Gosh I love this band.

    Pill-Popping Lap Banders?

I don't have any trouble with swallowing pills, at all. I used to cut them in half but don't even bother anymore. The only thing I can't seem to take is Multivitamins, because they make me nauseated. That was true before the surgery, too. Those I take in liquid form. I don't think it would be good to take any pills that are erosive, as they could sit in your pouch. I no longer take NSAIDS like motrin because of their effect on the stomach lining (that effect is pharmacologic, so is as likely to occur with liquid form).
  10. Things will get stuck from time to time. For me it happens when I forget about the band and eat too quickly or don't chew well enough. I take papaya enzyme pills when that happens.... chew a few pills, try some sips of Water, and it passes within a few minutes. Feels like forever because it is awfully unpleasant. My sense is that the pills help but I may be imagining it. Other folks have recommended pineapple juice. I've only things come up twice since I had my band. After a stuck episode I usually put myself on an antacid pill (like omeprazole/prilosec) for a few days and eat only soft stuff for a few days. And, like you, I find I don't want to try those foods again for a good long time!!

    Really only for "health reasons?"

I wasn't overweight until my 30's... and I HATED being overweight. I had my band in part for health reasons (prehypertension, slightly elevated cholesterol) but mostly because I couldn't stand being heavy. I didn't like the way I looked, but just as importantly I didn't like the limitations I felt it imposed- I didn't enjoy skiing, scuba diving, found running too hard on my knees, couldn't keep up with my cycling friends once we hit the hills, was not willing to go to a class reunion, felt too unattractive to date. I wasn't that heavy when I had my band (BMI 32, size 16) but I knew that if I waited longer I would just be heavier, and that plus older age would equal higher surgical risk. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the band. I'm no longer obese, have lost half the weight I need to lose, and feel wonderful. I am able to eat anything I want, but want a lot less of it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, and wish I'd done it sooner.
  12. Before and shortly after surgery I had numerous people (including some of the folks who took care of me post-op suggest or say outright that I didn't look heavy enough to need the surgery. Frankly, I took it as a compliment- I pride myself on being fit (despite being overweight), having great posture, and dressing well, all of which cause folks to underestimate my weight. I'm surprised folks have been so offended by similar comments.
  13. This thread has really reminded me how the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and how we all tend to covet what we don't have. I'm a natural D (34D when thin, 38DD now with my 40 or so extra pounds on board) and I SO want smaller boobs!! I think clothes hang better on a smaller busted figure, I would love to go braless, etc. I would have had a breast reduction years ago if it was as minor a surgery as implants are. I know I am going to struggle with whether or not to get a tummy tuck when I've lost all my weight. After 3 kids and the yo-yo of my weight over the years I will need one to look good sans clothes... but there is a part of me that finds the risk unacceptable when done purely for vanity....

    Doctor wait-time

Why would it be the doctor's fault that there is a shortage of endocrinologists in your area resulting in a demand for services that is greater than he or she can provide? Most primary care physicians are very capable of managing hypothyroidism. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinology actually recommends endocrine consultation for only a subset of more complex cases. http://www.aace.com/pub/pdf/guidelines/hypo_hyper.pdf I'd look for a new primary care doctor, or share this or a similar guideline with your PCP and nudge them to adjust your dose. I am also hypothyroid and it made a world of difference in how I felt when my dosage was increased enough to get my TSH down below 3. I had to educate my PCP a bit in order to get there. I hope you are able to get the care you need to feel better and get your weight loss on track.

    Morning tightness

Nowadays i consider my soy latte breakfast... then have a greek yogurt a few hours later. I don't miss not being able to eat more... I don't feel that hungry, that goodness. Dinner s another matter.
  16. My doc told me a HH is present about half the time and has to be fixed. I had one. Didn't add much to surgery time and I don't think anything to recover time.

    just registered tonight

I have never had the slightest problem drinking liquids.... I certainly have no 1oz limit. I still guzzle water, just not with meals. Carbonated beverages are a no-no, but I never drank them anyway so don't miss them.
  18. I'm sure there are those who won't like my response but.... Of course the world responds to us differently when we are more attractive! To deny the import of physical attractiveness in the world is very naive. It's not just human nature it's animal nature- it's why male birds have all that pretty plumage to strut around and attract the ladies. I'm not attracted to overweight men. Sorry, it's true. Nor to blonde guys, guys with ponytails or pierced ears. And I'm sure everyone on here could make lists of things they do and don't find attractive. It's just a fact. Now, I would never treat someone unkindly because they didn't fit the profile of someone I was attracted to. And of course I've dated guys who weren't 'my type' because I got to know them first and found lots of other things to like. But appearances matter, to some extent, to all of us, and it's not unreasonable that when our appearance changes the world's response to us changes, too.

TQUAD, did Run to Feed the Hungry add a marathon? I thought they only had a 5K and a 10K? I'm from Sacramento area too. : )

    No more favorite foods?

I am only 2 months post band and am amazed at what a difference it has made in my food preferences. I am more easily satisfied. There is nothing I crave that I can't have. Some things are just no longer worth it, since I know they won't be easy to eat, but I generally don't miss them. I eat about 75% of my meals out, and almost never have a hard time finding something I want to, and can, eat.

    Drinking...

Boy tough crowd. I spent the first several days after surgery recuperating at the home of a dear friend, also a wine lover and collector. I was on a clear liquid diet and decided that white wine was a clear liquid- and allowed myself half a glass of white wine each night starting on post-op day 2. Worked for me. Life is about balance and moderation.
  22. I've heard hair loss is common after WLS. Well, I'm about a month out, have lost 15 of the 50lbs I want to lose... and have started to notice hair on the counter, in the sink, on my clothing. My hair is not visibly thinner, but I'm starting out with lot of it. I'd like to know what to expect... do people see their hair get noticeably thinner? Is the hair loss often severe? Or is it just a bit more than usual rates of shedding? Is it less with less weight loss? Thanks.

When is support not really support?

Oh my, quite the thread. Sounds simplistic... but why not compromise? Tell him you'll go out to eat with him once a week, and make a list of restaurants that you both like and where you know you can make a reasonable choice, and let him pick which one and who you go with. He gets the pleasure of dining out with his wife sometimes, which sounds important to him. You're not going out 3 or 4 times a week, facing temptation, and spending big bucks. Maybe he feels that his needs haven't been completely subjugated to the surgery (which he didn't have!) and gets more cooperative.

    Serious Second Thoughts

It's like pre-wedding jitters. After I did everything I was supposed to (nutritionist, psych eval, note from my PCP) I called the office to make what I thought was my pre-op appt and instead they scheduled the surgery... I thought I was sure until then but once I had a date I had second thoughts. However, I went ahead, and I am SO glad I did!! With regard to the last supper thing- unless you're too tight you should be able to eat just about anything post op that you eat now... but you'll want less of it, and will be motivated by the commitment you've made to yourself, and by the weight loss, to make healthier choices. Best of luck!
  25. 1. Buy myself an awesome carbon road bike (can't justify it now since the extra weight on me far outweights the extra weight on my aluminum frame bike) 2. Scuba dive in Micronesia 3. Wear my shirts tucked in
