Ok, I didn't think I would ever be saying, Horray, to being overweight. But, I have officially left the Obese category, and I'm now entering the "overweight" category. As it turns out, I had 45lbs to lose to get from Obese to Overweight, now I have 45lbs to lose to get to normal.

*Susan* revision from band to sleeve
Jaffa replied to *susan*'s topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think you should make a video, where you put the band in a vice clamp....then slowly but surely you keep adjusting the clamp tighter and tighter, until it can't take it anymore. Kind of turn around is fair play thing?? -
*Susan* revision from band to sleeve
Jaffa replied to *susan*'s topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yea, they are spinning this with the whole "we feel threatened thing". They want to tell people how they are the victom, and they want to let people think you were unreasonable. It is a typical stategy employed by companies when they screw up. Just try and make yourself a victom and make people think that the other person is just crazy. I have seen it hundreds of times. It works, thats why business people do it. -
The latest data, is showing about 25% of Banded people will have complications within the first 5 years.....not 1%, your mixing statistical data and types.

Quote "To me this means when I really really want some ice cream, I can have some. I just can't have the 4 huge scoops I used to. " Oh my god. That is a great argument for gastric sleeve, but a horrible reason for band. You can eat ice cream all day long continuously with a band. It doesn't stop you at all. The problem with the band is not only do you have restriction, but you also get food intolerance. You flat out can't eat some things because they get stuck. I can't eat any left over meat for example. In the future, I am going to post to any newbie, that they should research carefully, the differences between, band, sleeve, and bypass. And make there choice. That is all I will post. It isn't worth my time, to correct every wrong statement, or misconception being put out.

Ok, I like your analogy. So if you were told you had two options, wouldn't you be irritated if later you found out you had a third option. My god, this is exactly what a lot of these surgeons want. They want you to become fixated with deciding among two options, and either one of which they win, but not discuss the third option that they don't even provide. That may or may not be the case here, but I suspect it is.

Your doctors are right. Obesity is obesity. You want to differentiate in an area that really hasn't proved to be all that helpful. You have obviously already made up your mind. So quit arguing with them and just tell them, it is the only surgery you want. Then they will collect their money and you will collect your band and everyone will be happy. I know I did that and I'm very happy with my band. But, if I ever have a complication down the road and have to pay for the sleeve, I will be very unhappy.

Oh man, I'm not sure what kind of response that is really suppose to be? If you could only hear how it reads to someone else. I'm going to give it a try for you. Ok analogy time. The only car I have ever owned is a honda, it is a great solution....a god send....an awesome way to get places....I don't have to walk anymore!!!!! I will never own any other kind of car. The honda is....was....and will always be my car. Well OK....that doesn't really help the person argue about which procedure they want and why? I simply don't get the post.

Ok, that is somewhat true, but may be a bit misleading. You can't just infinitely keep tightening up the band to lose more weight. You will eventually, get too tight and not be able to eat solids. Hey, I like the lapband way over GB. But I think people are being misled by a lot of these doctors who are giving the choice of either the Lapband or GB. It's like going to a car dealer that sells both Honda and Suzuki, and comparing the two. Well, if you don't know or talk about Toyota, then you don't even consider it an option.

Yes, I do as a matter of fact. But, I also don't think invasive is really a good argument on its own. You see, if she is using that one point to argue with doctors who know all of the stats and complication rates, and taken in balance and side by side, they don't think the band being less invasive is worth the trouble. I agree, it just isn't a good enough reason all by itself, but the other reasons are good enough in my opinion. I would never get the GB, and I think a lot of people feel the same way, so along came the lapband. When in reality, maybe the best solution is neither.

I think if your only reason for wanting band is less invasive, that they might be right. Personally, I don't buy into the less invasive thing so much. Have you ever watch a lapband surgery? Have you ever watched a video of them removing a lapband? It really isn't non invasive so much as it is non altering. Now, having said that, my regular doctor was exactly the same. I didn't want bypass, because I didn't want to worry about dumping syndrome, or taking supplements for malabsorption. I also didn't feel like I needed something that drastic. I have the band so instead I worry about getting stuck, slips, erosion, leaking band or port, port flipping, and eventually paying for fills. I would rather worry about those things, then the Gastric Bypass complications. Well, I don't really worry about those things so much anymore, because I would get gastric sleeve if I had any problem requiring me to have my band removed. If I was selfpay and could get gastric sleeve, that is really the best of both worlds in my mind. You still have complications, but they are usually just in the beginning, and then you go on with your life. You get rid of all the band complications and hassles, but don't get the hassles of Bypass. The reason, they don't offer it, is because most places don't do it. Why? Because Insurance won't pay for it. I would go so far to say, that even if Insurance would pay for Gastric Bypass, but I could afford to self pay for Gastric Sleeve, I would go with the sleeve. I love my band, just dread anything ever going wrong with it, and yes, I do deal with changing restriction level as the day goes on.

My surgery is scheduled for May 12th and a question about what to tell children
Jaffa replied to CyndiMomto3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tell her nothing. She is too young to really understand, and what good will it do her? You need her to know, for what reason? It only adds stress and confusion to a little life, that doesn't need it. -
I walk or ride a stationary bike. I read a good book at the same time. It makes the time fly by, but I also only do "fat burning" level of exercise only. Maybe later when I get slowly into better shape, I will kick it up to full cardio training.

I don't want anyone touching my brain. It is the most beautiful part of me.

BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) versus BodyBugg
Jaffa replied to Jaffa's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
For me it shows how much you have to work out extra, as you go down in weight. I guess this is why people don't just keep losing? -
First let me say, I love my bodybugg. But for those who don't want the hassle and or expense, I have found that this BMR calculator, is extremely close to what I burn according to my bodybugg. scale for my feeling of accomplishment anymore. I just add up my calorie defecit and divide by 3500 calories. After a month, I have noted my weight loss to be exactly equal to what it should be for the amount of calories I have used over the amount I consumed. It has really helped me get past the scale watching, which really isn't as accurate, since your Water weight can change as much or more then the amount of fat you have lost.

This is just a repost of a thread I started. I found this to be great information for those who don't want a bodybugg to track caloric burn per day. First let me say, I love my bodybugg. But for those who don't want the hassle and or expense, I have found that this BMR calculator, is extremely close to what I burn according to my bodybugg. BMR Calculator If you use dailyplate.com and add in any physical activity for the day, you will be very very close. So close it is down right scary. I in fact don't pay much attention to the scale for my feeling of accomplishment anymore. I just add up my calorie defecit and divide by 3500 calories. Well, I can't believe I forgot to blog this, but my wife is getting WLS. She has done really good, just trying to copy what I eat, and how I eat, but she has come to realize, that as usual, it is getting too tough. I LOVE HER, more then oxygen. She is getting the Gastric Sleeve, by Dr, Aceves.

How did you determine a WL goal?
Jaffa replied to nfl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used the online BMI calculator to find the highest weight I could be and be in the "normal" range. It came out to 160. I was down to 180 just two years ago by diet and exercise. But, I swore if I ever gained the weight back, I would get weight loss surgery. Then a bad car accident and two years later, and I weighed the most I have ever weighed, about 250. I had first set my goal as 150, just to make it an even 100lbs lost, but people would freak out when they heard that goal??? -
What is UP with this white background?
Jaffa replied to JuneAct2's topic in Website Assistance & Suggestions
It seems to be fixed. -
I'm now just past halfway to my goal. I now have 6.3, and I feel perfectly adjusted. I am tight enough in the morning to only be able to eat yogurt or some other mushy....which is what I would usually eat anyway. lunch I can eat, if I'm careful and pay attention. dinner, I can eat anything, but very limited on amount. I have my band adjusted to what I want for the evening meal, as that is when I'm mostly likely to have trouble.

So what did YOU do to screw up your band?
Jaffa replied to WASaBubbleButt's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have mentioned this before, that I think the doctors really emphasize the reasons for problems as being something the patient did, to get them off the hook. They want people to think, if you follow all of the rules, you won't have a problem. I think we can all agree, that is just not a good representation of the reality. But it sells bands!!! -
I really only drank in college as part of the "seeking women" ritual. Later, I realized, being thin, would have been much more successful and I never found anyone I really liked in a bar anyway?? Drinking is what I used to do, to make things seem fun, that weren't fun otherwise. I replaced these things with activities that I thought were actually fun sober. Of course these may not be the reasons to drink for you, that was just my reasons.
