Help-how long can the band stay in???
Jaffa replied to tondavi719's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I agree with the 5 year theory. I don't agree that you will have new eating habits and good to go after that. A far majority of people will gain the weight back....in fact most. People on here with 10 years?? HMMMM....I haven't seen any? Not that they don't exist, I just haven't ever seen one on here? -
Will I still be hungary and why do people regain their weight
Jaffa replied to chelan's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My biggest issue was portion control, and eating too many carbs. Now I eat less, but I have to choose the right foods or I will just eat more often. You must stop yourself from eating more when you are not hungry versus when you feel "full". If you can't do that now, then lapband won't be as successful for you. Carbs are still a problem for me, but nothing like they used to be....I now seek to balance carbs with Protein. If I go lower on carbs, I could lose faster, but my attitude is not worth it. -
I'm guessing it just depends on where the old scars are located? My wife had laproscopic surgery for gallbladder removal, and I'm thinking they may use the same spots for the sleeve? I know here scars are in the same locations as my band scars. But, I'm sure the Dr. will use the same spots only if they will work for him.

I love the sleeve concept....I accept the sleeve brother nomination!!!! My wife doesn't ever go on line. She isn't allowed to at work and at home, she just doesn't want to work on a computer. I'm on a lot because I have to sit all day doing nothing, but wait for people. I'm lucky, working out for a couple of hours a day just helps get rid of the boredom.

Yes, they are saying things out of ignorance. But, in reality they are scared and feel guilty for a lot of things. They don't want to feel guilty if you die. I know, I'm a parent. And I have a child who needs to have it done. But, I won't push too hard, not because I don't know it is the right thing, but because of fear and guilt. My wife, is going in late June to Dr. Aceves. I did a lot of research, and he was my pick. Frankly, there are people who are cheaper even in the US, but in reality, my wife won't be someones learning curve or ginny pig....so I'm very comfortable with our decision.

Only lose 50% of desired amount of weight?
Jaffa replied to Carriedaway78's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I guess, I just wonder what is meant by "desired". Are they talking about what the person desires, or, are they talking about being a normal BMI? I have lost over half of my desired amount in 4 months, but my desired weight is to just barely get to the normal BMI. I only had to lose 90lbs to do that. I say only now, because I am well on my way, before, losing 90lbs would have been impossible. Maybe it is largely a state of mind? -
HELP!! Going overseas for the summer & worried about not having restriction!!!!
Jaffa replied to alleycia's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
No offense intended for the Europeans, but I think most of the food in Europe is horrible. If you are like me, you might lose more. -
You could drink wine. The biggest thing I underestimated is the food intolerances. You really have to pay attention to the moisture content in the meat. You have to chew really well, and sometimes, what is no problem today, will give you a fit the next. It can be really really annoying, but in balance it is still worth it to lose the weight.

Even people who have had no WLS, would be better off not drinking about 15 minutes before and wait at least 1 hour after eating. Why more "so called" weight loss programs don't say this is beyond me?

HELP! Samples meals need, I'll Start

see my signiture line at bottom....click on link -
You can go to the bottom of my signiture and see what I eat for the last couple of months. I am a guy, so you probably don't need as much protein, but it doesn't really hurt, unless you get crazy with it. I also lose about 2lbs every 4 days. I'm currently on 8 days without losing, but I'm not worried. I am tracking my calories in and calories out, and the weight loss will show up. If you have time....try doing a little more time on the exercise and a little less intensity. I get my heart rate up to just 120ish and stay there for about 2 hours. It burns the same amount of calories and is easier to do everyday.

After my last fill, I have found that my food intolerances have gotten a little out of control. Before, I just couldn't eat left over dry meat. Now I'm having trouble with other things. It seems totally random. One day, I have no problems, the next, I can't seem to eat anything without getting stuck. It is getting really annoying. I'm going back on creamy food for a day or two, and see if it clears up, if not, I think it is time of a little unfill? It is only 19 days to my normal appointment, so maybe it will get better??? Just very frustrating right now. It doesn't help that the scale hasn't moved down in the last 8 days either.

I can hardly eat in the morning but can eat anything after 2pm! what gives?
Jaffa replied to coolchick's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Oh, and I don't eat dry chicken, salmon, or any dry meat. It is just too inconsistent. Make it consistent, with some kind of sauce if it is leftover, but don't torture yourself. -
They are using statistics to convince you and sway you by giving you that book. I guess, in the end they should just quote all of the statistics, and not change the parameters to their own benefit. That is a classic, but common misuse of statistics. Heck it is so common, we almost accept it as being honest, when it really isn't. They aren't being dishonest, they just aren't completely reporting the facts, which intentionally leads people to the wrong conclusions. It is like Clinton saying "I did not have sexual relations with that girl". Well he is being honest, because he defines sexual relations as vaginal intercourse. But he isn't completely reporting the facts, because he lets the person listening assume what he means by "sexual relations". What makes it especially bad and dishonest, is simply that in his case it is intentional. He knows that what he is saying is leading you to a conclusion that isn't accurate. That she is a liar and he is telling you nothing happened. That book they gave you, is doing the same exact thing.

Circa, I think you are seeing exactly the problem with the whole statistics sales point thing. And yes, it is being used as a sales point, don't kid yourself. I have seen it by doctors and several people, that will take the 1% sugery complications rate of the band and compare it to the 5 year complications rate of GB. You just can't use statistics that way and be valid, because they are comparing surgical risks versus overall risks. I have even seen a doctor do this, which makes me think it isn't always by accident when they do this. Most important, just to be clear they aren't saying anything about the sleeve when they talk about the gastric bypass statistics. Heck, I'm not so sure that several people don't even understand the significant difference between gastric bypass and gastric sleeve. Especially, when you suggest gastic sleeve as an option and someone responds that they don't want their intestines and such rearranged. What? They make your stomach small. They don't change the plumbing. I used the 25% number in 5 years for the band, because it was actually one of the lowest long term complication rates numbers I had found, most were actually higher. But, I get accused of being a band basher. I really love my band, but I'm not going to just sit here and give you a testimonial, when your specifically trying to understand the differences and the options out there and why the doctors may or may not be arguing with your reasoning. Now here is my testimonial, that I know you were not really looking for in the original question. I love the band, it has been great for me. I would never get Gastric Bypass, because I don't want to deal with all of the stuff they go through, and honestly my brother died from complications from it, so it scares me. But, I would have loved to had Gastric Sleeve, I just couldn't because of my job. You are so right, research, research, research. You will pick the right thing for you.

I really wasn't trying to be negative....I was trying to say, if it becomes a problem, don't just assume anything, and have it checked to make sure it doesn't get worse. And almost none of my posts are negative towards the band. They are honest and I try to be supportive, without being completely useless, meaningless diatribe. 2flyGuys....You need to know that bringing an argument from another thread into this one, is really just a form of stalking.

I can hardly eat in the morning but can eat anything after 2pm! what gives?
Jaffa replied to coolchick's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was always this way in the beginning. The band worked in the mornings, but by late afternoon, I could eat anything. I used self control at that point. It worked, because I made it work, until my last fill. Now the evening is much more band controlled, but I do have less tolerance in the morning. I like it that way, but that is just me. -
Crazy question about 20 years from now
Jaffa replied to skinnymommytobe's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
PB....do barf up what you have in your stomach above the band. I don't think you need to worry about the hormone being missing. We make food tasty enough that people like to eat it anyway....even when they aren't really hungry. It does nothing else. -
Well, I hate to think of the negative....but it seems to me, that a lot of people have trouble at about 3 years. I hope it is your period and not the band slipping or something.

Getting the band May 5th in Mexico...swine concern?
Jaffa replied to Timah85's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Our President, thinks "we the people" want to spend over 300,000 dollars for a new picture of airforce one flying around New York. That way people have a nice picture as a souvenir after riding on Airforce one. I don't value his thinking anymore. -

Ok, I didn't think I would ever be saying, Horray, to being overweight. But, I have officially left the Obese category, and I'm now entering the "overweight" category. As it turns out, I had 45lbs to lose to get from Obese to Overweight, now I have 45lbs to lose to get to normal.
