  1. Thanks for the new reading material! You go girl!

No fill until 6/2...I gained weight this weekend. Bandster Hell is the pits.

Hey, how did the NUT visit go? Hope you had a great long weekend!

  2. Hi Kathy! I've been on real food since my post-op visit 2 weeks ago.

Broth- I used Leana's (voiceomt2002) recipes for that and the soups I made. I've made several other of her recipes as well. She's writing a cookbook now!! have fun.

  3. PART II-

I've lost 15 pounds since surgery 5 weeks ago (but the docs office has me down as losing more...have to check on that). I've had no restriction since the third week after surgery and don't get my first fill until 6/2, so I'm officially in 'Bandster Hell' now where it's all up to me. I'm in the 'low BMI' category (I think I'm about 33 now) so it's going to come off more slowly than most people.

When is your surgery? Hang in there, it will all be worth it! Keep me posted! -BG

  4. Hi Sheri...good to see you here! I did not have to do a pre-op diet (I know, don't smack me). They just asked us to cut back on the sugar/fat before surgery. I did a self-imposed one and lost some weight. If this is your first week on the diet then you're right, most people lose more than 2 pounds that first week, but everyone's different. Make sure you're getting in at least 64oz. of clear fluids as not enough can slow the weight loss. Also, if you're not getting enough protein/calories your body will go into 'starvation mode', which will slow your metabolism and your weight loss. The purpose of the pre-op diet though is to starve your body so that your liver will shrink allowing an easier move of it for the surgery, so weight loss isn't the goal (but I know it's frustrating).

    5/24/09 Speed Racer

I jinxed myself. Here I am giving you all advice about driving, signs and the traffic on this holiday weekend. DD went camping and boating to a lake here in PA (about 3 hours from here) with a bunch of her friends this weekend. She drove a group and the last thing I said to her was ‘Drive safely!’ An hour later I got a call…her voice was shaking and it freaked me out ‘Mom?’...me ‘IS EVERYONE OK?!!’…Her ‘I got a SPEEDING TICKET!!!’ …me…just breathing again. It was her first ticket. Remember how I told you all to watch the speed limits as you drove through unfamiliar streets? Hmmm…should have reminded her. She was on one of those 4 lane rural roads that has stop lights and a few businesses every once in awhile to somewhere she’s never been. The speed limit kept changing from 65 to 55…well she was caught speeding in a 45 mph zone; didn’t see the sign changing the speed limit. She was so upset…of course ‘everyone around her was going the same speed’. It’s a good lesson. We had a ‘teachable moment’ discussion and she calmed down. I only hope it doesn’t hinder her from getting good car insurance when she moves out of here and can’t be on our policy anymore. I’m just SO relieved it wasn’t a wreck and everyone is safe. Oh, and the 8 yards of mulch is FINALLY done…we’re all exhausted, but now we can enjoy what’s left of our long weekend. I soaked in the jacuzzi tub for a half-hour and my muscles still hurt…black mulch…looks beautiful, but I have no fingernails left and my hands, even with garden gloves on, won’t come clean.

    Advice from ANYONE....Help

I'm guessing many of us have had the same experience...I have. I wouldn't worry as I've had pain several times as it's just the sutures (or clips if you have a Realize) on your abdominal wall healing and you'll get pain as you stretch until this is healed (I'm still having this from time to time and I'm a month out). Even if (not likely) you totally tore it and the port flipped there's nothing you can do without the doc and there's really no reason to get it fixed quickly this weekend. Personally, I'd wait and see if it's still as bad after the weekend and if so, then give the doc a call.

    Alcoholic beverages

Personally I'm allowed carbonated beverages...can't remember off-hand, but I think it's after 6 mo. post-op. My doc says there's nothing to the 'carbonation stretches the pouch' rumor, but that many patients don't like carbonation because it makes you belch and if you've got restriction, it can hurt to burp. It might be worth asking if you can have it after a certain point. Side note; I've NEVER been a belcher/burper, but even with no fill yet and no restriction just the funnel of the band being there I've noticed I burp all the time while drinking now (lovely)...doesn't hurt though. Personally, I drink wine now (love a hoppy beer too but can't have them yet), but you can order lots of mixed drinks "Tall" with the regular shot of your choice of liquor, but twice as much of the mixer so it's weaker (ie. I like a weak/tall vodka with diet tonic and lime...but that's carbonated too, so not much help). OK, I'm starting to sound like a lush here LOL. Everything in moderation and the big reason they don't want you to drink much is because it breaks the no liquid calories rule. Just be sure to add the calories to you daily total. I'm sure if you do a search for low cal. drinks you'll find some you'll like to try. If you like margaritas, that means you like tequila, so try ordering a 'Skinny Girl Margarita' (Bethany's recipe- Real Housewives of NYC). You'll probably have to give the bartender the recipe, but they'll make whatever you want, trust me they're used to mixing special recipes (this is not a weak drink, but way less calories and you can sip it slowly...I always order a water with drinks too so you can slow the drinking down and keep hydrated). If you try this one let me know how it is as I've been wanting to try it.: A typical Margarita has about 740 calories, the Skinny Girl Margarita has 245 calories (according to the Daily Plate). The Skinny Girls Margarita On the Rocks What you’ll need: * 2 oz of clear Tequila (100% agave, Patron Silver) * (count 1, 2 while you pour, no need for measuring) * A splash of fresh lime juice (1T) * A splash of Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec (1T and she uses Triple Sec) Combine all ingredients over a glass of ice Garnish with a lime wedge and if you want-salt (or sugar, but it's more calories then) if you’d like. Makes one serving

    5/23/09 Go Fish!

LD- Thanks! 17 pounds is great!!! We're taking a break as it's so HOT outside...1/4 of the mulch left to go. I just sent you a visitor message...
  12. Hey dear! CONGRATULATIONS on getting your date!!! It really starts to seem real when you have a date, doesn't it? Things will start to speed up again once July gets here. Do as much as you can now to keep busy...make some soups/broth and freeze them, go vitamin and grocery shopping for non-perishables you'll need post-op, make plans for what your family will eat and do while you're recovering, make your packing list for the hospital, lists of questions you still have for the docs, on and on...there's plenty to be done and it does make the time go faster. I'm SO happy for you!!! YAY! -BG

  13. Thanks girl! Hope you're having a wonderful weekend and the diet isn't too bad for you...the third will be here before you know it!!! Countdown time!!!

  14. LOL! I didn't even remember it was one month down! Boy that went fast...now it's countdown time for you!!!

Bunny Bandsters - April '09, MASTER THREAD #1

Muphy, If you haven't already call the doc before they close. I'm not sure what you mean by 'major restriction', but describe to the doc's office in detail what you can/can't eat or drink and they'll be able to tell you if you need an unfill. Some people get tighter right after the fill and you don't want to be choking on your own spit this weekend and end up at the ER. They should know if you'll be OK or not depending on your restriction now. Good luck! -BG

    Friday Weigh Ins

211.5 today. Slow and steady...can't wait for the first fill though (6/2).
  21. Band_Groupie

    3 days now

Just a suggestion...take a laxative or stool softener NOW! I can't tell you how many people here didn't and had such problems they thought they were dying...when things...ummm...finally wanted to come out, but couldn't. Anesthesia can cause constipation as well. Trust me, it's a good idea to take something now. Good luck to you. -BG
  22. Band_Groupie

    Freaking out!!!

Many of us have 0 fills when our bands are put in (like me). It's just the Drs. preference and mine says even a little fill at banding is too much for some and that some people have enough restriction with an open band and never need a fill. I've had no restriction since my third week (banded 4/22) and I don't get my first fill until 6/2. This is called 'Bandster Hell' waiting to get enough fills to get the restriction back again and most go through it. I just wanted you to know you're not alone. The reason docs don't want to rush the fills is that your body is still healing at this point and that should be your focus...the fills will come soon...patience is hard...trust me, I'm frustrated too! -BG
  23. Band_Groupie

Just had a port replacement, but they found no leak!

I think your doc should have refunded your money for the port replacement since he was wrong...and if something is wrong with your band doesn't he cover that? JMO. I really hope everything goes well tomorrow! -BG

What rules were you given for the lifetime diet?

Hey, fills the same day! We'll have to compare notes!!!

5/21/09 Sign, Sign, Everywhere A Sign

My kids are off school for the next 5 days. Boy, that huge mulch pile arrived at just the right time…coincidence? I’ve been thinking, many of you are probably taking trips for Memorial Day weekend. Yes, the mulch pile has my name on it, but you're headed to better places...probably involving a beach chair and a cabana boy. I'm happy for you.......really I am. Now you know the traffic is going to be crazy and I want my LBT friends to be safe out there. Please drive safely people and pay attention to the street signs as you're driving new routes through unfamiliar streets! Pay close attention to the speed limit signs. And I'm sure you know better than to speed lest you spend your long weekend in the pokey (no cabana boys there, but maybe some cute boys in uniform). Children have the weekend off too. Remember my kids are off starting today, so please don't hit them...I can't make any more...and that mulch pile has their names on it too. You might want to wake up the person riding shotgun when you need some help navigating and fly by signs like these at 45 mph. ...and when in doubt, just STOP and get your bearings. Have a great vacation...and if you have no plans, no worries, you can always PM me for my address...we've got some crazy fun times planned involving wheelbarrows and pitchforks. I'll SIGN you up...I'm even taking long haired freaky people!
