    day 5

Congratulations on the banding! Try to get in enough water, and calories and protein that you don't start getting weak and shaky (200cals. is REALLY low). Your body is now in 'starvation mode' so it will slow your metabolism. It's great having no hunger isn't it...hope it continues for you! -BG

    6/05/09 Another Milestone

Music to enhance your reading pleasure, click here: Tonight is DS1’s High School Graduation. I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. It seems like yesterday that we moved here and he was entering 4th grade. OK, no tears, yet…must...not...cry...save them all for later today. We’re really proud of how well he’s done in school. He’s graduating with honors (he's excited he gets to wear an honors stole). His senior project (a year long requirement for graduation here, they can pick any subject/project) was on student rights and his project was getting the School Board to pass a new bill to have a student sit on the School Board. He’d make a good lawyer…loves to argue his side about anything…trust me, I’ve been on the other side of that one too many times this year. He’s decided to go into Engineering at PSU, and he’s rooming with his best friend…they’ve played soccer and ref’d together since they were little, so he’s really looking forward to it. So another summer of me purchasing everything he’ll need at school; it’s my way of ‘nesting’ and feeling better about leaving him. I’m told boys don’t take nearly as much stuff to school…DH will be glad to hear that as we’ve been moving DD around campus with her ever multiplying mountain of ‘stuff’ the past four years (and now it’s all stuffed in her room and our basement). Now, excuse me…I need to go get tissues ready for my ‘cry-fest’ tonight. Happy Friday all!!!

    Food stuck, sore throat

The feeling of 'stuck at the back of my throat' is something I get when I'm full...like things are backing up. But that shouldn't give you a sore throat...did something scratch going down? If it is a full feeling, and since you ate a long time ago, try drinking something and see if that flushes it through the pouch...might be a piece of meat.

    Low Carbing

I could have written that same first paragraph. Wean off the caffeine/coke slowly and it's easier (massive headaches if you go 'cold turkey'). Good luck! -BG

Will one solid food really undo EVERYTHING?

You can do this...have a SF Jello, or SF popsicles (these were a lifesaver for me post-op, they even come in tropical flavors...and you get that 'chew' feeling. I've heard of people chewing things then spitting them out (gross, but it's better than cheating). It's all about the choices we make and you'll still have that post-op (not that I've been perfect at all). Good luck. -BG

    I really need some Input....

WELCOME to LBT! Suggestions- Spend some time here looking at the stories and all the stickies on the home page. Call your insurance company now and ask for a copy of your bariatric policy so you know your requirements for approval. Attend more than one places seminar so you can make the best choice for you. BC/BS Insurance

Just wanted to say everyone's BCBS policies are different. I have BCBS Highmark of Western PA and I found that BCBS is different in every state and even within my own state. If you have a copy of your policy, you should know if you're meeting all their requirements. Your surgeon's office (person who deals with ins.) should be a good source for if you're a good candidate for approval as well. Good luck! -BG

What rules were you given for the lifetime diet?

It pushes the food through your pouch too fast and into the stomach. It doesn't get digested in your pouch it just sits there (there aren't any stomach acids in the pouch) and gravity takes it through, which is the whole point of the band-to get it to sit there as long as possible so you feel full...if you drink it just washes it through faster. Same reason you don't want liquids or slider food calories. Drinking before lubricates the pouch, so some docs set a time before meals for the same reason. Really, they want your pouch dry and your food as dry, solid and as big of pieces as can get through your pouch stoma for the band to do what it is supposed to for you.
  18. I just had my post-op visit and they've now gotten rid of the pureed stage. I'm now on the 'Lifetime Diet' but the new sheet they gave me is just a list of suggested foods with no amounts or details (the original one with the NUT was more specific). I'd like to know what rules you were given for your Lifetime Diet (real solid foods). I'm sure everyone's includes: no drinking with meals, eat Protein first then fruits/veggies. The other things I'd like to know are specifically: 1. No drinking ___ min. before meals? 2. No drinking ___ min. after meals? 3. Must drink ___ oz. per day? 4. Protein ___ oz. or grams, per meal or per day? 5. Total meal size ___ cups or ounces per meal? 6. Snacks or no snacks between meals? 7. Calories ___ per day? 8. Any other rules? Thanks so much for your help!

  23. Thanks for the comment! Good luck to you on your decision. 'Obesity Help', and 'Thinner Times' are two other great sites that would give you more info. on the RNY and other procedures if you're trying to get all the pros/cons before deciding (TT is mostly RNY- very helpful group there, and OH has sections for each type of surgery as well as lots of archives on procedures, docs, hospitals, etc.). Let me know if you need any help, and keep me posted! -BG
