How are the banded Notorious Novembers???
jms462001 replied to mljalways's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh, and I forgot what I really wanted to post!! I think a lot of our stomach problems (or was mine before all this!!) is the extra skin. That causes the muffin top and feels like fat. If we all could get tummy tucks I think we would find we don't really have that much fat left. -
How are the banded Notorious Novembers???
jms462001 replied to mljalways's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And woe is me!!!!!! My stomach is huge after the hyster. I am so swollen I swear it is the size it was 70 pounds ago. Oh, and I came home from the hospital 10 pounds heavier!! But I have been peeing every 20 mins since so that's Fluid. I already lost 3 of it. My lapband Dr told me to expect a gain from all the fluids they would pump in me but he said nothing about 10 pounds!! I am so bloated and feel so fat and miserable and in pain. Plus nobody fed me yesterday so I ordered a pizza which now is gone (total unfill too). If my friend gains any weight before her repair, I will be losing right along with her!!!!! Well, after my pity party, at least I hopefully no longer have cancer!! All looks good and the pathology reports come back in a few days but the Dr does not expect to find anything else!! So......I can deal with the rest I guess! -
You will know when you have true restriction and you won't be able to eat after a certain point no matter how much you would like to!! I'm totally unfilled right now but thankfully haven't got that raving appetite back yet!!

Hair Loss - Will it stop?
jms462001 replied to RUKidding's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Get all your protein and add flax or peanut butter for the oils you need. I didn't lose any hair and the fat seemed to be the only thing I did differently. -
Discomfort swallowing after 3rd fill
jms462001 replied to amandasatx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If painful swallowing continues, you will want to have a small amt removed. You are probably really close to your sweet spot. Sometimes less then .25 cc can make a huge difference. -
Everyone is different. My Dr said any pill that will fit through the top of a 16 oz water bottle is ok. I had no problems until after my 3rd fill which was too tight and I am glad to have unfilled!!

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that. No chance of it fixing itself with a total unfill? Seems like I read that on here before. Did she give you any clue what may have caused it to slip? Too tight? Just happens sometimes? I worry about it as I'm self pay. I guess I would worry about it even if I wasn't actually! How exactly did she say she would repair it? I sure wish you the best and hope it's right back as it should be really quick! Best wishes to you! I get my unfill tomorrow for my surgery. -
I have to get a total unfill on Wed for upcoming surgery. I will be unfilled for a few weeks. I was wondering how others may have handled being unfilled. Was it very difficult? Was the appetite huge and was there a great difference in the way you ate? Were you able to stay on your program?

Coping with total unfill??
jms462001 replied to jms462001's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know someone who had lots of weight to lose and did not get the first fill for 8 months. He lost close to 100 pounds in that time. It is very individual! -
Coping with total unfill??
jms462001 replied to jms462001's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My problem was I always ate very healthy foods, but way too much as my body burns few cals and I am unable to exercise much. Hopefully I can control the big appetite now! I did well with less restriction as well. In fact, the Dr. filled me to around 5.5 for these few weeks leading to the surgery and I have been miserable and find myself eating poorly and not losing as well as when I had less restriction. I have been sick more times in the past 3 weeks (extreme PB's) than in the entire 9 months of my weight loss. Swallowing pills also causes me much distress even though I don't have to take many (even tiny ones often get stuck). Now I understand why people do not lose well when they are just a tiny bit too restricted and why some people are not happy with their bands for the same reason!! -

Thanks for your reply. I don't know how much you lost, but Nov is a long time back as that is when I had surgery. I'm sure I would have gained a lot more than 25! I hope you get taken care of soon! I will try to be careful It figures this would happen right when I reached my original goal!! A test I guess!! -

Should you eat before a fill?
jms462001 replied to munck5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That makes good sense to me, but I had my protein shake and my latte just before my fill and it did not seem to effect it. I did not have solid food even though I was told I could eat as usual. I don't eat solid food in the am anyway and had my fills early afternoon -

If you are still able to lose an avg of a pound or two a week you should leave it alone!! -

I'm allowed to eat and drink right up until the fill. It's after that I have to be on liquids then soft foods -

Do you think there are really many offices that deny people the band due to their psych exam? I doubt it or I'm sure a lot less people would have the band and also there would be less failures. I think they suggest counseling, but don't reject many people due to their exam. -
Protein, Protein, Protein...

Interesting because I have eaten lots of peanut butter throughout my weightloss journey!! In fact, I was thinking there might be a fat link to the hair loss months ago as I read about it. I had forgotten. I started incorporating a couple TBS pf PB at night early on when my weight loss slowed and my NUT said it was due to not consuming enough cals. Maybe this is the secret to preventing hair loss and flax would probably be a very healthy choice -

I have fine thin hair and was very worried about losing ANY!! I was very happy that I didn't seem to have any hair thinning and I really do not know why. I did get all my protein in every day, consumed a lot of tuna the 1st few months, took Biotin (not lg doses), used nioxin hair products along with my usual most of the time, and that's about all I can think of. Now, I am having another major surgery on Sept 3rd so it will be interesting to see if I am so fortunate this time. I sure hope so, but I will let everyone know!! -
How are the banded Notorious Novembers???
jms462001 replied to mljalways's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, my radical hysterectomy is scheduled for Sept 3rd. I had not lost much all summer mostly due to my trips and the way I was eating. I had needed a bit of a fill for a long time. I went for one a week and a half ago and the Dr told me I will have to be totally unfilled for my surgery and wanted to do it that day. I argued that I could do lots of damage in 3 wks and wanted to return the day before. He agreed since I was already prepped and said he would give me a "good fill". Well, I am at 5.5 cc's and it is just too much and I am miserable some of the time. I have trouble getting pills down and have had them stuck several times, had food stuck and been sick too many times and would have been back in for an unfill if it were not for the total unfill coming up. I now see why people do not lose when they are too tight as I do tend to go for slider foods when really hungry and those cookies, chips and chocolate go down very easy!!!! I just hope I can get back to a comfortable place after the surgery and also not gain any weight while unfilled. I am two pounds from my original goal, but will now change it to about 15 pounds lower (much to my husband's dismay!!) I'm happy to see everyone here is hanging in there and most are seeing great results and everyone is confident they will succeed!!! -
How are the banded Notorious Novembers???
jms462001 replied to mljalways's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took a spur of the moment trip to Africa to visit my husband after hearing I might need the surgery and about the possible cancer as I was freaking out initially and running away seemed best at the time!! I had a Pet/Ct scan before leaving but did not wait for or call for results. Going away was good for me as I relaxed, calmed myself and almost forgot until returning. I returned to a letter from the oncologist, who I had not yet even seen, with a tentative surgery date for Aug 10th based on reports and phone messages from the hospital to come for pre-op testing. Needless to say I was freaked out again on Sun when I got home!! I am somewhat better after seeing the oncologist. I rescheduled surgery for Sept 3rd. I am seeing my son in NY this next wk and have plans for the wk after as well and need to make arrangements before just running out and having surgery! He believes it to be early cervical cancer and is doing a radical hysterectomy but the good news was he is doing it laproscopically robotic so recovery should be faster and easier. I went for my fill app but did not get one due to my Africa trip. I ate so much while there but did not gain. I really need a fill, but am thinking I should probably wait until after all this surgery is over. What do you guys think??? I don't want to start gaining weight. Some has been stress eating but my appetite is definitely much bigger and I have to stop myself at meals! -

Thanks! I was very upset initially, but now I'm trying not to worry about it. I do not usually have a problem with nausea. I have an app. for a fill on Wed and will ask then. I suppose the ultimate diagnosis would determine any changes necessary with the band. I guess abdominal surgery does not mess with the port or anything? It was funny. My spinal surgeon took x-rays last week and asked "what's that coil in there?" I had forgotten all about the band and looked at him like he was crazy since I have never had any spinal surgery yet. Then I looked at the x-ray and realized he was talking about the port!! He said he had never seen it before. -
too tight or just right?!?
jms462001 replied to ReadyOrNot's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The rate at which we lose weight is not dependent on how much fill we have. It depends on how much we eat, what we eat, how we eat, and our exercise program. The important thing is being filled at a point where we can eat properly without getting sick, stay full for several hours and lose 1-3 pounds weekly on avg. Being overfilled eventually slows weight loss and can cause damage to the band.
