So, my teaching assistantship ran out after last semester. Every other person that lost their assistantship during the last several semesters was automatically hired as a part-time instructor. Apparently, though, they just made new regulations that require every person to submit an application before being officially hired. Guess what? They forgot to tell me that. I never made an application, so now, my job is at risk. I have to go talk to my advisor (also the guy who makes the teaching assignments). I could scream! It would have been nice to have a little warning, you know?
-
Well, I went and talked to my advisor this afternoon, and I'm going to be teaching at our other campus from 9-4 on Fridays. I get to teach a lecture and two labs, plus get extra pay for being off-campus. I'll also get reimbursed for mileage. So it all worked out, but I'm still ticked off about not being told until the week before classes start.

No Child Left Behind? How about adults?

I agree with this to a certain extent, but I also think that we need to put responsibility on the student to learn, as well. In today's society, we like to place blame everywhere but the place it truly belongs. I have several family members who are teachers, and I have personal experience teaching college-level biology laboratories. The sad fact that I have come to realize is that many students just don't want to take responsibility for their education. They want to be baby-fed their education without putting any effort into learning what they need to learn. And from what I've heard from my relatives (they all teach elementary classes), it isn't any better there. In those cases, though, it isn't just the student failing to take responsibility, it's their parents that don't want to LET their child take responsibility. When a child fails a test, it isn't the child's fault for not studying, it's the teacher's fault because she didn't put every single test question on the review sheet. Little Johnny or Tiffany couldn't have failed to study for a test, it's all the teacher's fault. -
That's exactly what I did. I can remember hiding in my bedroom and gobbling handfulls of grated parmesan cheese out of the can.

Oh no, believe me, I was being stubborn. Even if I was still hungry, if I didn't like the food on my plate (beans, hamburger, brussells sprouts, etc), I would flat out refuse to eat it. My parents told me that I could either eat the food or sit there, so I sat there until they gave in.
-
I was an incredibly stubborn child. I sat at the dinner table for hours more than once, just because I refused to finish my food. But yeah, I still have lots of problems with leaving food on my plate. I feel guilty if I don't finish, and it makes me eat until I am very uncomfortable.

Name one thing people would be surprised to know about you

Ditto. I think people would be surprised to learn that I'm more than a bit of a mouse in real life. I'm not nearly so outspoken. I just have a few triggers that really set me off on the internet. I don't think I know everything, but I'm not ashamed to talk about the things I do know just because other people might not. Sometimes, I think that makes people resent me. -
Both are in Tennessee. Dr. Weaver is in Memphis and Dr. Boyce is in Knoxville. Has anyone had any experience with either?

I comb mine when I first come out of the shower. Other than that, it doesn't happen.

Don't get me wrong, I love my curly hair. (Well, now that it's short enough that it doesn't really tangle badly, I love it. When it was long, it was horrid.) I just wish I could get it to style. One of my old hairdressers tried to style it one day, in a popular style, and it looked absolutely HORRIBLE.

Believe me, it isn't unusual for older people to go back to college. I teach general biology labs as part of my graduate school teaching assistantship, and I usually have several students every semester that are 30+. I think my oldest student was in her 70s. To be honest, the older students are usually my favorites because they are actually there to learn and get good grades. They generally don't dick around like a lot of the younger students do. -
Yep, that's what she does, at least with the first few fills. She told me when I went in for the first one that it probably wouldn't be enough to give me good restriction (most first fills don't), so to give it a few days and then call for an appointment for another fill.
-
It helps a little, but not very much. The only thing that I've really noticed is that it's a little harder to eat certain foods than it was before I got the fill. Other than that and some slight restriction, there isn't much difference. My surgeon is pretty aggressive with fills, so if I can get an appointment for this Wednesday (the only day she does fills), I'm going in to get a second fill.
-
I'm back from my first fill! It was scheduled for Wednesday, but when I got to the surgeon's office, they said she had had a family emergency and that they were supposed to have called me that morning to cancel my appointment. They rescheduled my fill for this morning, so it was a good thing that my brother's inlaws like me and that they let me stay an extra night with them! (I drove to Memphis on Tuesday and stayed that night. I had planned to drive back on Wednesday, but that obviously didn't happen.) Anyway, she put 1.4 ccs in my band today. I will probably be going back next week for a second fill, since I am still a little looser than I want to be.

I just don't bother with very good hair cuts. My hair is naturally curly, so it is difficult to cut and style and make it look like anything. I used to have it halfway down my back, but I took a class trip to the Everglades a couple of years ago and got it cut off right before I went. It's EXTREMELY short now. Right after the last time I got it cut, my brother joked that it was shorter than his hair (and it was). I'd let it grow out, but I just hate to take the time and effort that it would require to make it look halfway decent.

Which vitamins do you take? I take Centrum orange-flavored chewable multivitamins, B-12 sublingual dots, and will be starting calcium citrate pills soon.
-
Well, I'm REALLY looking forward to my first fill. Right now, I can eat way too much. I have absolutely no restriction at all right now.
-
I have air conditioning!
-
Unfortunately, that's how my Super Wal-Mart is, and it's been like that since they built it about 10 years ago.
-
Thanks, Dini and dmtjet! I am currently in Bandster Hell. My first fill is on Wednesday. Right now I can eat anything and I do mean ANYTHING. I kinda got into a "last suppper" mode since I didn't really get to have one before surgery.
-
I agree with faithmd. Normally, I'd be all for someone keeping their WLS private, but the way Star acted after she had surgery was just asking for inquiries. If you want to keep your WLS private, then stay mum about it. Don't pretend that you lost weight by some other method. To me, it came across like she wanted to profit from the controversy but she didn't want to admit that she had surgery.

They're going to be here tomorrow. If I survive that long. It hasn't really dropped below 90 degrees in my apartment. Well, I just called them about it on Friday. I kept having to go out of town, so I couldn't call to have them fix it (my landlord requires residents to be present when repairs are made). Plus, every time I would get ready to call them, it would start working again. From what I can figure, the air conditioning unit's low on freon or whatever. It would work sporadically, mostly when I would first turn it on. Not anymore, though. Now it just blows hot air. And of course, it had to COMPLETELY break during a very hot weekend. I'm just hoping that they are able to fix it before Wednesday, because it's supposed to hit 99 degrees.
-
Hey guys, I'm back. Just haven't really felt like posting much since I have no air conditioning. All I've felt like doing is sitting here and melting. Anyway, send me your updates and I'll get the spreadsheet posted.
-
Yep, it isn't freezing. After the repair guy left yesterday (at which point the air had been turned on for about 20 minutes), it only blew cold air for about half an hour. Before I turned it on, it had been off since Tuesday. Plenty of time for it to defrost, if freezing was the problem. I haven't gotten it to blow cold air since he left, so I think it's just low on freon or whatever. I wish I could just go sit in a cold bath until Monday.

I think most of you know how I feel about massive families. I personally think that people shouldn't have more kids than they themselves can care for. There are many ways to teach your children humility, responsibility, and work without having them raise their 16 siblings. Yes, I think that parents should be doing it on their own, for the most part. Why? Because they are the parents. I'm sure their other children didn't get a vote on the issue of having another child in the family. IMO, if you take on the responsibility of bringing a child into the world, you should take on the responsibility of caring for it. There isn't anything wrong with having your other children or other family members babysit every so often, but to permanently depend on them for the basic care and feeding of your other children is simply disturbing, IMO.
