Let me give you a scenario: If some racist prick made a joke about a gang of KKK members lynching a black man, is it somehow less offensive because it's a joke? THAT is my point. If something isn't acceptable in regular conversation, it isn't acceptable in jokes, either, IMO.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, I think. The timing of it, to me, was everything. For example, I don't know if there would have been such an uproar over it if he had posted it at a time when the Iraq thread wasn't active. I mean, I would have still found it distasteful, but it wouldn't have been nearly as offended by it. But to me, the timing of it being posted says that while he may have genuinely found it amusing, he also found the perfect time to post it and get people revved up. When I see stuff like that posted, I'll usually ignore it completely, because I honestly don't think it's worth responding to and bringing more attention to it. The only exception to that is when I believe that a major motivation behind it being posted is to piss people off.

Again, I think a lot of it depends on who the audience is, who the person telling the joke is, and how they've timed it. The joke in question was originally suspicious to me because of the fact that the person telling it had just been involved in the thread about Iraq, and he knew that there was at least one Muslim on the board that took her faith very seriously at the time he posted it. There's a time and a place for everything, I think, and that wasn't it.

You know, I can see Jachut's point here. A large portion of society apparently thinks that comments that can be very racial, stereotyping, and bigoted seem to be acceptable when they're preceeded by "wow, you gotta hear this joke" or "this is sooo funny, listen," yet those are usually the same comments that warrant, at the very least, a raised eyebrow or a cold silence (or even assault) by many people when they are dropped into regular conversation.

What gets me is when people aren't joking. I was at the house my brother's friends shared in Memphis, watching a football game. One of the guys was getting pissed at his team and started making some very racist comments towards the black players, really screaming at the TV. You know, yelling comments along the lines of, "What do they have to do, put a plate of fried chicken and greens in front of you to get you to move forward?" I can't even do justice to his comments. Suffice it to say, it was unpleasant to be in the same room. I dunno. Maybe I'm so sensitive to it because I live in an area of the country where there is some very real racial tension between whites and blacks. All I know is that in most cases (here, at least), if a white guy came up to a black person and started cracking racial jokes, there wouldn't be a good ending. But yes, I totally and completely agree with the comment that you need to know your audience. There are "jokes" that are completely okay for people to use among friends, since their friends know that they aren't serious. Strangers don't know that, though.

Well, you can always get exercise equipment for your house, so that you don't have to go to a gym. There is not going to be a solution where you aren't going to have to exercise.

Yes, exactly. That's also sort of what I was trying to say with the whole "belonging to the group makes it different" thing, too. It's one thing when you are joking around with a bunch of people that belong to that group and you happen to be a member of that group, also. But if you aren't a member, and you're making the joke to a bunch of people who also aren't members of the group in question, then it just comes across more as pandering to prejudice than making a joke.

Yeah, I would call that cat weird. Mine likes to try and get my dad's clinic's mascot chihuahua (he talked her neglectful owner out of euthanizing her and got her healthy again) to play with him. Keeps batting at her.

That would be me, also. I'm hoping that I get a bit more curve as I lose weight. Right now, it's just flat.

My cats would probably go nuts, I think, if I brought a pig in. But maybe not. One of them isn't even afraid of dogs, so he'd probably make friends very quickly.
