I started putting weight on at age 13. Have PCOS. At age 41, i developed type 2 diabetis. My dad was a diabetic. I watched him struggle with it all of my life and die from it at age 79. I didn't want to continue down that road. The statistics are that if wls is done within the first 7 years of becoming a diabetic there is a very good chance it can be turned around. My morning blood sugars were 179-200 prior to surgery and already are down to 110. I am so grateful. I would have had a quicker recovery from the diabetic issues with gastric bypass, but I just didn't want to go to that extreme if I didn't need to. My best friend did have gastric bypass on 4/17/09. We have gone through the surgeries together even though our paths are a little bit different. Her doctor and my doctor are partners and cover for each other alot. So its been nice to travel this path with my best friend and we both love our doctors. They are really terrific. My dad passed away before I was diagnosed with diabetes. I'm glad he never knew his kids got it. There are 7 kids in my family. My oldest brother and myself are the only ones that have it and we were both diagnosed after we lost our dad. If my dad could have had this chance to get rid of the diabetes, I think what it would have meant to his life. I want to do this for him and for myself and for my child.I am grateful for the surgery and will make sure to make good on this opportunity for health.
