While reviewing the benefit changes for 2009;I noticed this is the last year that Fed BCBS will allow the procedure without precertification. Fed BCBS has also increased the amount of co-insurance you owe in 2009. Keep in mind you owe everyone co-ins:the physician, the facility ect. So with this being said, if you are seriously considering having gastric bypass you might want to think about having it done this year. Has anyone in Kentucky with Fed BCBS been through the process? How long did it take? Did you have to jump through hoops?

Has anyone had surgery by Dr Oldham or Dr Weiss in the Kentucky area? How was your experience?

Good Morning; The website is www.fepblue.org; go to the tab "benefit plans". The left side of the page will have the different plans; choose the appropriate policy, then go to medical benefits. If you have to download the booklet, gastric surgeries are discussed on page 49.I have spoke with a representative at Anthem Federal and was told there was no 6 month supervised diet required; as long as the other criteria is met. You may also review the policy changes for 2009.Precertification will be required in 2009 for these procedures. I am working hard to get this done before the end of the year. I wish you the best of luck! -

The benefit book for Federal BCBS does not state that a 6 month supervised diet is required; so if your BMI meets criteria and especially with other issues you should be approved quickly. -

When choosing a physician;contact your insurance company prior to the appointment to make sure they are a participating provider. It is helpful if you have their tax id number when calling. If they do not participate with your plan you have to pay the difference between what insurance pays/allows and physician charges. This is not a scam, it is simply how it works. -
Who can still eat whatever they want?

Being able to eat whatever I want is my biggest fear! I am in the process of insurance approval. If I spend money to have this done; I want it to work. Does the protein help? What suggestions do you have?
