Protein and water requirements
54Shirley replied to Lady Lexie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Both of those sound like they would be good for you. I think it's 5 minutes in the Microwave. So just sending that your way. I'll give you my favorite in mushies, and it's good ! Easy too ! Ingredients: I container large cottage cheese (Quart) 12oz cool whip 15oz of crushed pineapple (DRAINED) 2 small packs of your favorite Jello that goes with pineapple I think lyme is the best for this. You could try strawberry. (NO WATER) Drain pineapple In a large bowel, put the jello in it, then stir in the cool whip. stir until dissolved. Add the cottage cheese, and stir, add pineapple and stir. Refrigerate overnight. This is FANTASTIC Cottage Cheese is some protein, (AND YOU DONT TASTE IT DO TO THE JELLO) Makes a Great Pot Luck at a party. I make it about once a month, changing flavors. Have Fun with it, Let me know if you try it, and like it. -
Hypo-Thyroid Bandsters
54Shirley replied to MelBanded's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My hair is long and straight, so when I run a comb threw it, I always have some hair breaking off, but I think this is normal with long hair. Skin is not dry and flaky at all. Yes we should all stick together, because our condition is different from the regular Bandsters. -

Any other over 50 yr old Lap Banders?
54Shirley replied to Linda1002's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm 56 and have 2 artificial Knees. I make it a habit to walk unassisted, and I walk around the block 3x a week. That's my exercise. We go out every now and then, and were all over the place, but the Hubbies knees are starting to hurt. So I guess he will be seeing the Dr. for the knees wearing out. (USE TO BE A TRUCK DRIVER, SO ALOT OF UP, AND DOWN.) I have been banded a while 10/31/2006. So almost 5 years. This is my second time around with the Band (HAD TO START FROM SCRATCH) and I am so glad to be on the Band Wagon. It takes pressure off the knees, feel better all the way around, and me and larrypdot will someday both get a new pair of suspenders LOL Just Kidding Larry. Although he was wise to make the suggestion. Just a idea of what you can look forward to in the future of weight loss. Good Health to you, Shirley. -
Good Luck you 2... See you in BANDLAND.

Protein and water requirements
54Shirley replied to Lady Lexie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost 5yrs. banded, and I still drink shakes... I mix mine with water so your water consumption adds up even in shakes, Soups Decaf Tea or whatever. I put a jug of 640z. in the Fridge, and use it for everything, including drinking. So if you get a little wise to the system, and see with your Dr. that its a good thing to do (NOT 64OZ. ON THE SIDE, THAT'S TO MUCH) This can work for you. There is a recipe on here that I saw the other day for Pepperoni Chips. About 15 0f them in a Micro wave for a few minutes on paper towel. Check them so they don't burn, but you want them crispy 150 cal. LapBand Food. -

Lap Band vs Gastric Sleeve
54Shirley replied to dlucia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would really have to give it some thought. The sleeve sounds good, In fact here in Michigan, they have some surgeons that are rolling or folding the stomach over, and sewing it instead of cutting, and staples, so if you want to go back,"SUPPOSIBLEY it can be done, Because the whole stomach is still there... Also I understand that the Hormone that makes you hungry, comes back in about 2 years. On the other hand it does what the band was suppose to do??? Thats what I hear. Well I was told it's a slow go, about 1-2lbs. a week is the Norm, also if you don't chew you will be stuck, If you follow your Instructions you will lose weight. That sure sounds like the band to me ! So what is it suppose to do that the band Promised, and doesn't do? It's a whole different thing. It's not covered by my Ins.. So I guess I will wait until it is, and then enquire about it. In the meantime I'm banded. -
Should I start over?
54Shirley replied to peacequeen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's why you need another surgeon. I do relate to not wanting to lie, that's not my thing either, but when your up against them over abuse, Trauma, sexual abuse, anything out of the ordinary. They will flunk you. I know because I told the truth to, Abuse! and that witch flunked my psych evaluation. But the Dr. didn't buy it, he gave me a written test, and I passed it. I then had my surgery. I'm telling you for your own good, and from experience. No matter what, there is nothing wrong with your past, present, or future with a new shrink. He needs the money, and you will be passed. -
Hypo-Thyroid Bandsters
54Shirley replied to MelBanded's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Armour Thyroid is still available ! Maybe you have to check with different pharmacies, it can be ordered. There is not the problem that they had with it before. I would look into it, and if it can be got, then tell the Dr. that's what you want. It can't hurt to try. Shirley. -
How do you handle the naysayers?
54Shirley replied to lmwalt2413's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't bother about all the NEGATIVE FEEDBACK ! That some of these people can dish out. They have not walked in my shoes at all ! So how can they possibly know anything that I have done, or been through. It's not possible as far as I can see.... So they can ramble on with all there wise words of wisdom, when in turn they are just walking mountains of misinformation ! So I don't listen to them at all. -
Trust me,,, you are not alone. I to have a sensitive POUCH. So I can't follow the rules because it's to painful. So I have to drink to wash it down. But I eat between 800-1200 calories a day. So I weigh, and measure, and journal my food, so that I try not to go over 1200 calories. I also take 60-80G of Protein a day. This works, because it's dieting. We all are put on some sort of plan. So how I eat, and when I drink my Water works for me, as long as I stay within that window of 800-1200 calories. Also I belong to myfitnesspal.com this is a great help ! Also it's free. It also records your exercise, and keeps your foods in memory, and has a giant log of info. on foods. Take a look at it and give it a shot and see how it records your info. Shirley.

Should I start over?
54Shirley replied to peacequeen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand about the Trauma as a child with the Death of your parents, and I believe you when you say, that it is a legitimate, and they are in my opinion. The Problem is in a shrinks opinion you have a problem that might take years of Therapy, and Meds.. Then when you are better, you will lose this weight threw clear thinking. (SOMETHING LIKE THAT) So you have to pull the wool over their eyes so they don't see this. In other words if you want this surgery, you can't tell him all these problems. You can continue talking to your Therapist by all means ! But don't tell them anything about the Trauma or that you are Depressed. Yes LIE to them. Or you will never pass the psych. exam. It's weight Loss Surgery that you want ! So how bad do you really want it. Pass the shrink, and you will be ready to go. Keep being Glum in their eyes, and it's not gonna happen. So get your game plan together, and go see another WL Shrink. Shirley -

Should I start over?
54Shirley replied to peacequeen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you flunked the Psych Test,,, Some offices will give you a test to see if you understand the process, and realise what is going to be done to you. You might want to ask your Dr., If he thinks his shrinks word is GOLD, and that you want the surgery. Can it be done See if he says yes or no. If no get all your paperwork that was described from the lady above, also make copies of everything. Your going to keep your own file in case they lose anything. Then Find a Shrink that specialises in WLS. You were never Depressed, Abused, anything negative that is major that can blow this surgery. When you get the passed psych.. Of course copy that, then look for a new surgeon to Transfer to, and you will have copies in case anything goes wrong. If they ask why the change? You just aren't comfortable with him. You will be surprised how the staff will say. O he's a nice guy, he's not like that. Get a file, and start filling it. -

Hypo-Thyroid Bandsters
54Shirley replied to MelBanded's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You have to be on some kind of a diet from your Doctor. Keep your Calorie Level down. I no it's hard, but if you want it to come off, then you have too... We are not like the rest of the banders, weight loss for us can be very hard. So if it means cutting back in calories, and having the band a little snug so that I'm not hungry.... I'll do it. I have 2 artificial knees, so I can't afford to be heavy on these knees. I don't have High BP, or Sugar. I don't want it either. I'll be 57 in September, I want to live a while longer, and I don't like the feeling of being FAT ! I also don't like being treated like I'm stupid because I look the way I am. I didn't ask for this,,,, I started getting huge at 6 months of age. So I have never known skinny, and never will. I would be happy at a size 12 or 14 for my age, and already I have had someone say hello to me, and look at me, not look away. He even continued the conversation slightly. So put your mind to it, don't worry about the scale, and just go for it, and stick to it. It will make a difference. Do you have a Walmart there? They carry it. or Order on line, you can even go threw CANADA. Shirley. -
First of all your going to be sore, and that takes time to heel. It's also important to get your protein in liquid form, 60 to 80 Grams a day. For one, I'm sure you don't want your hair to fall out. Pick up some samples at lapband meetings or on line, and do the wright thing. Don't hurt your stomach either.

Hypo-Thyroid Bandsters
54Shirley replied to MelBanded's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to my Endocrinologist today for hypoThyroidism. It was my 90 day check up. The Nurse was shocked when she saw the weight difference. My first weight was 305Lbs. ,, Today I was 271 Lbs.... That's a little more then 11Lbs. a month. You know what?? I'LL TAKE IT... This is for all you, and the Newbies. This is possible to do. I eat between 800-1200 calories a day, and 60-80G of Protein a day. That's it. I don't bother with a scale, they drive me crazy. It is more worth it, to go to the Doctors, get weighed, and watch them have the shock of YOU HAVE LOST WEIGHT OMG, and you know this because you will be able to tell by the looseness of your clothes. So I try to keep it simple, and be patient, and it works ! I also walk around the block 3x a week. I just thought I would share this, also I am on Armour Thyroid a Natural Medication. Shirley. -
Surgery tomorrow at 8 a.m. and I just swallowed gum!!!
54Shirley replied to Texas12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine told us that there has been many times that it goes down, and they end up in the E.R., and he tells them "It better not be Gum.. When he gets in there, it's Gum. So for what it's worth. I don't dare touch it. As far as carbonated drinks,,,, I forgot myself one hot summed day, and had a cold bottle of Root Beer. NEVER AGAIN ! All that carbination , it felt like a war was going on inside me. So I don't touch it. If you do? It truly shows that everyone is different.
