I went to my specialist today...
54Shirley replied to 54Shirley's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations on your approval ! i had know idea that you were changing over? I wish only the best in Good Health... Let us know when you get your date set (IN STONE !) I am also on there site, I didn't know if I would have this band fixed,or go to the sleeve at one point ! Turned out the Band was just deflated. If Medicare ever makes it covered on their Ins. I might look into that.. Good Luck on your Journey. Shirley. -
I have not seen my Endocrinologist in 90 days. When I first seen him I weighed 305Lbs. (THE NURSE SHOULD ME ON PAPER), Today I weighed 271Lbs... "YES !" She was shocked, and I to was surprised, that's a little more then 11Lbs. a month. That's not bad at all ! She thought it was do to my Thyroid Medicine, and I had to break her Heart and say "NO, I HAD MY LAPBAND FILLED.) Ogh...... I told her it's still a good thing ! It's a loss. She agreed. So for all the Newbies, and non believers this is for you. Consistency is the key... I stay between 800-1200 calories a day, 60-80G of Protein a day, I never weigh myself at home, only on a Dr.'s scale, Drink my MUSCLE MILK LITE, and I walk around the block every other day. I record all my stuff on myfitnesspal.com that's it. and it is nice and slowly coming off. So my Turtle is slowly moving. I can't wait to see it next year , or myself .

Throwing Up Black Watery
54Shirley replied to skinnytex's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to see your Doctor. Make a list of what you want to tell him # each question, and just give it to him, and tell him you keep forgetting to ask. He'll understand, that happens all the time, and he should write the answers down so you know. Thats what I did, He was very glad that I took the time to bother. -
Been denied for weight loss
54Shirley replied to LauraRN's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to check with the nurse that takes care of the Ins. at your surgeons place. Also contact your ins. company, and find out your own information. Make, and keep notes. Then compare to what his nurse in ins. said. -
Weight loss before the surgery
54Shirley replied to lindsayma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 45 lbs before surgery. My surgeon then tells me that I have a goal for you in weight loss. So what if I didn't make it? He said then I wouldn't perform surgery on you! So I ask what is the goal (FIGUREING I MUST HAVE MADE IT!) 50 lbs ! But your close, so I guess you tried. Boy I could have kicked him, because he never told me about this Goal.... Doctors !!!!! -
Isa: I love Sea food, and Fish. So I will definitely be checking out this blog. As far as Fish I love It BROILED. Take a cookie sheet, spray some Pam on it, then lay your fillets out . Spray on some Olive oil Pam on the Fish, just a light spray. Sprinkle with lemon juice, and Paprika Broil about 15 minutes total. Depends on how much you have. Keep a eye on it, Flip it half way threw. If it flakes your done. I like Tarter Sauce or I make a cucumber dill topping out of yogurt, and Powdered Cucumber Dill Dip, Just mix and chill. Fantastic Taste. Great on the fish, and a good dip for Holidays or Party's Nice job on the recipes  I just read the Walleye/sprouts. I might try that in a week or so Thanks, Shirley.

How long after surgery did you see the lbs start to go down?
54Shirley replied to lee_nyc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I starting losing weight before surgery. The surgeon took me of steroids, when I told him my knee was still killing me (KNEE SHOT) So he took them all away. In about 2 days my Kidneys went back to normal. I lost 30Lbs in 30 days. I never Peed so much in my life! It was terrible. So as I was dieting for 12 months prior to surgery. I saw the physical change happen at 50 Lbs of loss. I guess it depends on how heavy you are to see the difference. By the time I had surgery, I had lost over 100Lbs. by sticking to a 1200 calorie a day diet. -
did i make the wrong decision?
54Shirley replied to Time2BHealthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just a tip on the coughing. Since your newly banded, you don't need a hernia, So take a pillow and put it over the incision and hold it there with your hands over the incision also. When you cough, and you feel that pushing out, use the pillow,to push back in. Every time you cough, keep a pillow handy ans use it. This will help prevent a hernia. -
It's been almost two years...Where are you now?
54Shirley replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you remember,,, part of the point with the Band or any WLS is making good decisions in eating. Hershey's Syrup, Ice Cream (LO CAL OR NOT) . Pop is not a great idea. Even diet soda can give a beer like belly if you drink enough of it. If your depressed, you need to talk to someone about this. Remember this ai a slow go, so imagine yourself 1 year from now if you do something about it because we average 1-2lbs. a week, or see yourself in 1year if you do nothing. You were banded for a reason, Go back to the basics. Shirley. -
did i make the wrong decision?
54Shirley replied to Time2BHealthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes it will get better as it heels. But,,,, you have to Burp, Hiccup, what ever it takes to let the gas out that they pumped into you. If I kept all that in I would be miserable too. -
HELP!! Wondering if anyone else had this pain? Migrating port??
54Shirley replied to new me by 30's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your surgeon can do a fluoroscope and see exactly what's going on. It's like a x ray machine, but for moving things, and you see it all on the screen. If something is not right they will see it. -
The dreaded tummy rash :(
54Shirley replied to SkinnyInside=)'s topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know for sure if the Dr. report helps, but it can't hurt... Since I have been a kid this is what my Doc. told me to do. First it is Bacteria, so you need to wash it away a couple times a day. Use a wash cloth with warm soap, and Water and wash the area, then with warm water rinse it well. Pat dry, do not rub ! Then apply NOXZEMA SKIN CREAM it's for chafed skin. Now this will absorb pretty quick, so if you have to put it on again. Then repeat in the evening. Should be gone in a few days. So keep it up. When it's gone you can dust with a water proof powder so that the sweat doesn't start it up again. Shirley. -
I'm starting to hate my band:(
54Shirley replied to spoiltmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are either in THE RED ZONE do to swelling from constant throwing up, or you need to see a Dr. do to the burning. Whenever you are throwing up, don't try to eat just drink liquids for a couple of days. If it's from a fill, then liquids for 3 days, mushies for 1 day, then try food. Otherwise you will forever be miserable, and you could even cause that band to slip. You should also go to your Dr. and have it checked under Fluoroscope. That's a xray that shows moving parts, it will also show your fill level, and you will see it on screen, they will know if they are over with the fill. Or if you have acid reflux. If your throat is burning from acid, get some prilosec or omeprazole for the stomach, and stay on shakes, and liquids. You should still be looked at though. -

Using straws to drink in the first couple of weeks
54Shirley replied to Hydun2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told never to use straws again ! -
He should set up the Tests, and Specialist's that you have to see. Like Cardiologist, ,Dietitian, etc... I had the two I mentioned plus psych., Internal Medicine, and Physical Therapy. They broke everyone up into 1 specialist a month, this way you are also always weighed (REMEMBER THAT) Once you skip the weight like the 4th. month, You would have to start getting weighed all over again for another 6 months. Only difference was I had 12 months of dieting. Get a paper Folder, and every time you visit, and get weighed ! Get a print out. If they give you a hard time tell them what ever you say does not matter, you must have a print out for your file. Then make copies of everything, so you have a file on you. If they lose anything,, It's no problem for you, you can copy it and give it to them. You will save yourself a lot of hassle if something should get lost. So talk to him, and see what he wants to set up for you. Shirley.

Many questions...need answers :)
54Shirley replied to JennyGrace's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You can eat a lot of stuff with the band, and some things you will find that you might have to give up. (MAYBE) A lot of people average abut a cup of food per meal. I eat more, or less, or the same it depends on the food, how it's going down for you, If your having a good day Arguing will cause mine to feel tighter, so I can't eat as much. I drink Protein shakes for the protein. The band for the rest of your life..... Well it is a Tool. So it will go bad someday, and the idea is to get it updated. So unless you can learn to eat properly, and control the Hunger Beast. you will probably be Banded. If you can do this ! Then Good for you... Things have changed since I got banded I guess. I only saw a Dietitian 1 time. But once you are Banded at Henry Fords, she is yours forever. I see you suffer from the Hunger Beast, with enough fills, that can go away. A lot of people who never were able to get pregnant (CO MORBITY) They get pregnant when they have lost weight. Not sure how that works. Hope this helps. Shirley. -
Any other over 50 yr old Lap Banders?
54Shirley replied to Linda1002's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The Dr. thought he BLEW MY BAND, he over filled my band. He deflated me, and wouldn't take care of me. So I had to get Ins., we moved up north, and I had to find another surgeon. That was not easy. No Doctor wants to touch someone else's garbage... I found a Dr. that was trained by my original Surgeon,,, . That was a shock, but he took me under his wing, and the process started. They checked the band it was fine. So he started to fill it and it was fine they put Epoxy in it in case there was a leak. In that whole time3 yrs. I almost regained it all back. So now it's back to the beginning, and starting all over again. That's how this is my second time around. Nothing major happened, just the Dr. thought he blew it. It was bad aftercare. He is Chief Surgeon of HENRY FORD BARIATRICS. Excellent surgeon, I would even give 5* for his work. But his aftercare,,,, a student could do better. Hope this helps. Fills help a lot ! Shirley. -
What am I doing wrong?
54Shirley replied to betheboo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your weight is right on the money ! You should be happy.... Just for the asking Do you retain Water? I do, and I stay off that scale..... I only get weighed at the Dr,'s Office, I keep a purse calendar, and look at the last time I was weighed, then do the math. I am much more happier that way, and I can tell by my cloths if I am losing weight. Be patient,, this is a slow go. Like I said though, your numbers are right on the money. Shirley. -
Baby Food or NO baby food?
54Shirley replied to mamajen1221's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i liked Mashed Potatoes, with Gravy, Re fried beans pureed with cheese sauce on it, and I used salsa sometimes. Devil Egg yokes, and smash up the egg whites, and stir it all in, It's really very good. Chili made from Turkey Burger, and pulse that a few times in the blender, and flavored watery oatmeal. -
What does being in the GREEN ZONE mean to YOU?
54Shirley replied to CheckYes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your hungry about every 4-5 hrs., you really don't think about eating, and you feel Great ! -
I went through this with my husband. It's nerves,, He's scared you'll Die (YOU WONT) or be different, Cooking will change, and can he deal with this. He will, once he See's your fine, and gets a little use to it. This is life changing for you ! I don't have to tell you that you already know it. If you want to be healthy, and see your children grow up, not to mention be able to keep up with them or play with them. You need to do whats right for you. If it were him would you sabotage him so he doesn't have it done? Of course not. Also mention this to your surgeon, and he will gently set him right. Go have it done, and start a new life. Shirley.
