    A question from my fiance

I really don't think he'll need to do much... maybe cook for himself and clean the house the first week? The post-op recovery was relatively easy. Is he expecting you to be bedridden? LOL.

I think your Mom is correct. "Seeing" ourselves the way others do is going to take quite a bit of time.

A New Home - Sleeve People!

If you feel uncomfortable telling your boss, don't. You only have to let her know that you're having a surgical procedure and that you require "X" amount of days off. I elected not to tell anyone but the same two people who knew I was going to have lapband surgery three years earlier. When your friends and family see you losing weight and improving the quality of your life THEY will have to EAT their words.

Congratulations on getting the surgery and on your weight loss. It sounds like you had a great experience.
  5. Either that or the poster ran for the hills! LOL.
  6. It sounds like you got a crush! LOL.

A stent? Do you mean a cardiac or a biliary stent? I don't see how either would help heartburn. Have you had a cardiac cath?

    Nexium

I had surgery in the early afternoon on a Wednesday (the second and last case of the day). The next AM, I was awake at 6 AM and showered, washed and dried my hair, dressed, and was ambulating in the hallway. I went outside the ER entrance and sat on the bench. Walking was NOT hard at all. As for reflux, I had none. The ONLY time I had a little hint of heartburn was when I went to solids and took one bite too much after "full" had registered. I learned from that and don't experience it anymore. Dr. Aceves wants his patients to take Nexium 20 mg once a day for 3 months post-op.

    Super Size Me/Documentary

Dieting would not be necessary IF nutrition was taught early on in schools. Many parents have no idea how to read a food label. They might truly believe what they are serving is healthy when, in reality, it's crap. Have you ever read the ingredients listed in a container of cool whip... disgusting. Like it or not, childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic in this country and the present generation is not expected to live as long as their parents. How sad is that? In the hospital, we see pre-teens coming in with complications of diabetes, breathing problems and yes, chest pain! Call it whatever you want but kids DO need to be put on diets if their weight is out of control. About all a lot of kds are exercising today are their hands and finger... computer, texting, and reaching for chips.

I found this for you: Compression Stockings Offer Little Benefit After Stroke May 27 (HealthDay News) -- Compression stockings don't reduce the risk of blood clots in stroke patients, according to a study that urges revision of guidelines on the use of the support hose. The study included 2,518 immobile patients in Europe and Australia who were admitted to hospital within one week of experiencing an acute stroke. Some patients received routine care plus thigh-length graduated compression stockings, while other received routine care only. Ultrasounds of the patients' legs were performed between seven and 10 days and at 25 to 30 days after they were enrolled in the study. The researchers were checking for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that can break up and get carried through the bloodstream to the heart and lungs, which is a potentially life-threatening problem. DVT occurred in 10 percent of patients in the compression stockings group and in 10.5 percent of those in the routine care group. The study also found that skin breaks, ulcers, blisters, and skin tissue death occurred in 5 percent of the compression stockings patients and in 1 percent of patients who received routine care without compression stockings. The study appears online May 27 and in an upcoming print issue of The Lancet. "Compression stockings are used in the majority of stroke units. In this study, we have shown conclusively that compression stockings do not work for stroke patients. National guidelines need to be revised and we need further research to establish effective treatments in this important group of patients," study author Martin Dennis, of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, said in a news release. In the study, Dennis and his colleagues said that stopping use of "this ineffective and sometimes uncomfortable treatment will free up significant health resources -- both funding and nurse time -- which might be better used to help stroke patients." Dr. Aceves does not use adhesive, he uses paper so you'll be fine.

    Oo-oo-oo

I am an RN and I am allergic to adhesive tape. I made that clear in writing and verbally. Dr. Aceves uses paper tape so... no worries. Silk tape is another good alternative to adhesive tape. For those having surgery in the U.S. who are allergice to adhesive tape, ask for dermabond. It's basically sterile glue and it's EXPENSIVE. Surgeons love it but hospital budgets don't so ASK for it. Steri-strips help incisions approximate (come together to heal) and are meant to stay on for a week to ten days. As you shower, they loosen and then easily pull away after the 7-10 days have elapsed. Reddened areas are normal.

    Nexium

I would advice not using them. Compression knee highs are sold by calf size but don't take into account length from knee to toe and this can result in actually increasing leg edema. If you're driving, get out and do three laps around the car each hour. If you're flying, keep flexing your toes and legs... point them towards the seat in front of you and then flex them up towards your nose.

    Pain

I had that for the first few times I ate real food. I was told it was due to post-operative swelling and went back to fluids for a day. All was fine after that.

    Super Size Me/Documentary

I was a fat kid and teenager and... Knowing how awful kids can be to one another, I can't understand a parent putting crap into their kids' bodies. I buy things on sale and take advantage of the sales by buying in bulk. This week, I got buy one, get one free chicken cutlets. I spend a few hours preparing them, portioning them out, and then freezing them. When I don't feel like cooking, I take a pack out and dinner is a breeze. I can honestly say I have not been to a fast food restaurant like McDonalds in well over 8 years and I don't miss it. I don't eat beef, pork, or lamb so not much on their menu interests me anyway. Maybe this economy will force more people to eat home. Cooking with a kid is something they love and it's an excellent way to teach them about reading food labels and instilling good nutrition habits.
  18. I've worked as a Registered Nurse for over 2 decades in New York. I worked for 4 university affiliated health care systems and had my band surgery in the U.S. as it was paid for by insurance (after a long fight). The band failed me and Empire BS/BS would not pay for a revision until I had a 6-9 month "paper trail" of documented problems. I was worried that the months and months of choking up stomach acid was going to cause esophageal cancer and I could no longer tolerate the quality of life I was dealing with. I saw 2 bariatric surgeons in NY and spoke with 2 others. All wanted @ $25,000 out of pocket to revise me to a VSG or bypass or give me another band. I only wanted a VSG but they tried to talk me into other procedures (likely because they were more comfortable doing them). The $25,000 included the surgery and the time spent in the hospital in a semi-private room. Two surgeons send you home the same day and the other 2 send you home the next day. Since the U.S. was letting me down, I researched Mexico and found a bariatric surgeon who certified by the American College of Surgeons. He operated out of a hospital with ICU capabilities and used an all RN staff. For LESS than half the money, I got: - Transportation to and from the airport - All pre-op testing - A night's stay in a gorgeous resort (with free transportation to and from the hospital) - The surgery - Post-op testing - A private room with a private bath and round the clock nursing care for 3 nights - A 2 week supply of nexium and pain medications Any doubts I had about going to Mexico were erased when I walked through the doors of the EXTREMELY clean hospital. U.S. hospital could learn a lot from the way things are done in Mexico. I saw my surgeon three times a day and felt safe and cared for. In the U.S., the surgeon sees you for 5 minutes a day. Would I go back to Mexico? In a heartbeat, yes!

I did not see the post that was edited so I can't comment on what you're upset about. I do know that debate is encouraged but personal attacks are against the rules. It's the same at lapbandtalk where I am a moderator. I certainly hope you take the time to look over the many other forums before making rash decisions. Whatever you decide, I wish you well.

It great to share the different post-op diets but it's important to follow the one your surgeon asks you to.

On Day 5, I stood up and down I went. I emailed and got the OK to go to soy Protein Shakes that day and had no more problems. I wish I could get down the whey protein but I gag on that. Soy slender drinks are the best I can manage.

You crack me up. Hey, maybe whomever is lurking from the government is fat and needs a sleeve. LOL.
