8 months banded and I'm still learning

HG, I am glad that I am on here today and read your post. I have had alot of confusion about am I restricted or not? I have been working on the small bite thing for the past 2 days. I am finding, like you that I am able to eat and hold down the good dense proteins by tiny bites, putting down the fork between bites and chewing. I thought , like you, that I was eating slowly and taking small bites, but now I am thinking I was wrong. I also can gulp water, take large horse pills and eat sliders with no problem. I wanted to eat good healthy foods, but I was taking 2 or 3 bites and up it came. The last 2 days have been an eye opener. I am thinking that even though I don't have killer restriction , I am going to hold off on getting another fill until I have this eating thing down pat. I haven't lost any weight lately, but I know that I have been eating wrong foods and not exercising. I am trying to do better. I have, slowly, started walking every day again, measuring my food and making better choices ,so hopefully the weight will start coming off again. I will decide later about a fill. Thanks for posting today. I really thought I was the only one having this problem and now I know I am not alone. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

    Lets Celebrate !!!!!

Way to go Humming Bird. I hope to join you with a size large. It is taking me awhile longer, but I know I will make it eventually.
  4. During one of his education lectures to me, my surgeon told me that people can and do actually stretch out their esophagus by overeating and get to the point that they can eat as much as they ever did. I guess the bottom area just above the pouch expands. Depending on what he is eating and drinking, the food could be just pouring out of the pouch. My surgeon also told me that eating food like soup is just like eating and drinking at the same time. He may not have enough restriction and certainly needs to follow up with the surgeon. Is he keeping a food journal? If not he needs to start one and take it to the dr. with him. Does he ever vomit or pb? I agree with some of the other posters and I am trying to work on this myself. Measure out food and only eat that amount. I too can eat much more than I am allowed of some foods. I have trouble with dense proteins, but can pig out on any carbs. I like 2911plans want the feeling that I can not eat another bite, it ain't happenin' Either I can eat too much or it is coming back up. How many fills has he had? Has his dr. told him to come back for more fills? Does he ever vomit or PB? Good luck and keep us posted with what you find out. 123Crod, I am coming to the same conclusion you have. I just have to use that good old fashion will power and use the band as it was designed as only a tool.
  5. I agree with Humming Bird. I think it has something to do with the sliming process. I have it alot when I start to eat. It seems to be a warning to slow way down. I usually have it at the first of the meal not at the end.

    Tasty, Snacks.

OMG, I just found the most delicious snack. It is the new Jello chocolate Mousse. It is sugar free and 60 cal. per serving. It's in the dairy case with the other pre-made jello. I found it at Walmarts. It would be nice with a little cool whip too.

    Oroweat Sandwich Thins

This just goes to show that we are all diffrent. I love these things, but the don't love me. I bought them and tried eating them, toasted and both times I pb'ed. I gave them to my husband to eat. They are delicious if you can tolerated them.

    Hormel Chili Recommendation

Mimilou did you get a response from Hormel about a low sodium version of the chili? I love it. I also make my own chili and use only fresh ground turkey. I guess I am weird , but I can not stand ground turkey that has been frozen. It just has a weird whang to me. I won't buy or use it after it has been frozen. Thank goodness Walmarts has a good supply of fresh turkey. Speaking of turkey my sisterinlaw found a smoked jalapeno turkey for Christmas. It was unbelievable. So delicious and I am not that crazy about turkey. She found it at Brookshire Brothers grocery store. Happy new year. Let's have chili with our blackeyed peas and cabbage.

    Lets Celebrate !!!!!

I haven't posted any NSV before. I can get out of a chair , off the couch, out of a low car without a struggle. Often without a thought. Before it was a definite struggle and at times did not know if I would make it.

    Glucophage takers

I take those hugh pills and have no trouble(knock on wood) swallowing them with a big sip of water.
  11. I will have to agree that it is harder for diabetics. I know for myself, I have been diabetic for a long time and have been, for the most part, been eating a diet that other folks would lose alot of weight on. My body became used to this diet and my weight was high but stable, eating a" healthy" diet. When I was approved for surgery, I made a big mistake and started eating like my friends. Not a lot of sweets, but going out alot, eating Mexican food etc. and I gained 30 lbs. before surgery. Not a good thing. I am still on my diabetic meds. My surgery was May 15 and I am at a standstill with a 50 lb weight loss. I have stalled and I know why. Eating and eating the wrong things and not exercising. Time to get back in gear, but yes it is more difficult for diabetics. Plus alot of the meds make us gain wt. and make it more difficult to lose. Another good reason and my main reason for surgery was to get off all these expensive and side effect laden meds. Good luck to all of us. It is going to be a good wt loss new year. I love this site. It is a good place to get , exchange and share information and experinces.

    Alpine Spiced Cider

I tried it and it is delish. I also sprinkle mine with cinnamen yum. It hits the spot on a chilly day when you just want something hot and sweet.
  13. Lookin' good Phyllser. I looked at your photos and what a diffrence since your band. Lots of hard work but worth it.

    Time release meds?

Cent,my surgeon's nurse told me no pills, all meds crushed or liquids. My PCP told me to try crushing them all even the time released???? I tried crushing them,GROSS . I finally gave up and take them one at a time with a big sip of water. I was banded in May and knock on wood haven't had any problem with getting stuck. I have 6.5 cc in my band. I read several posts on here from people doing the same thing with no problem. I can't advise you only tell you my experience. I am sure others have had problems with stuck meds.and can tell you about their experiences. My surgeon's nurse told me she got a capsule stuck and it was horrible. Unlike elgrad I still take all but one of my original meds. and my A1C was 7 in Oct. so I will probably have to stay on my meds awhile longer. Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

    6 month Bandiversary YAY

My 6 mo. will be the 15th. I had a 1/2 cc fill yesterday. I gained 4 lbs in 2 wks. Boo hoo. Halloween candy and other stuff didn't help. My surgeon gave me alot of food for thought yesterday. I had been eating alot of homemade soup (good for you right). No it is not. He said it was the same thing as drinking while you are eating. Reasonable. I think that I have done well in 6 mos. Still have a long ways to go, but I will get there. I am pleased to see so many success stories for the Mayo Banditos. Let's keep up the good work.
  17. I got this at a support group meeting. Use double milk. I use 1 cup skim milk and add 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk. This doubles the protein of the milk and is less calories than most protein drinks. I flavor mine with sugarfree chocolate or low sugar strawberry "quick". It is delic. and no after taste. Sometimes I add crushed ice and blend. You could be creative and use frozen fruit, coffee, hot choc. mix. I have heated the milk and added sf quick and a few marshmellos um! Can also add milk to other foods, cereal, mash potatos, pudding, etc. I do this all the time as I have not found any drinks that I really like. Unjury is ok and I tolerate the lo carb slimfast, but they are hard to find here.

    Before & After Pictures

SpideyMom amazing you don't look like the same person. What a diffrence 4 mos. can make. I am stuck on a plateau for several weeks now. I have started walking so hopefully I can start the downward cycle again. Congrats. on your weight loss and keep up the good work.

    Tired of Explaining

I feel your pain. I am constantly being ask how much weight have you lost now? Sometimes by a person who ask me the same question 2 days ago. I have just started telling those people I don't know. I don't weigh every day and leave it at that. They usually let it go. It is annoying esp. since I seem to be at a stand still. I think if I were losing 5lbs a week I would probably be more than happy to tell everyone I meet.

Does anyone have a redi set go?

I have to admit I bought it and have used it only to make pizza. It was wonderful. I haven't been cooking alot since the band, but I like the gadjet and haven't had any problems with it. Hopeful one of these days I will get in gear and start using it. It came with a recipe booklet that looked good. I also have a small George Foreman and use it to grill chicken.

    How is the lapband different???

I agree with what has been said. The band is only a tool, but by the time most people get it they are at the end of their rope with diet. It is work in progress for me and I feel like it will always be. It helps me by not allowing me to binge. I can eat a small amt and be satisfied. I was always a grazer and now I just don't want to. I may eat a 1/2 c sf ice cream a week and that is enough or I may have a cookie or small chocolate as a treat and be satisfied in the past I would just keep eating once I 'broke" the diet. I also eat mostly what I want. If we go to a mexican resturant I will have a taco or part of a meal and take the rest home. I don't sacrafice much. So far this is the way it is going. Everyone is diffrent. Another thing in MHO there are alot of lapband sucesss stories out there that never come to this board. Alot of people that are having problems or concerns come here seeking support and this is the place to get it. People on this board have done it all and don't mind offering anyone a hand. Good luck no matter what you decide.

    muscle milk protein drink reviews

I think I am the only one that thinks muscle milk is terrible. I have only tried the light as I am diabetic. I have poured out several containers. I drink the slim fast lo carb. (not terrible) I havent found any I thought were delicious, but Unjury and BSN lean desserts aren't bad. Good luck. Hope you find one that you like.

    Arthritis meds after surgery

I know anything that might eat into the stomach or may cause bleeding is pretty much out. I am on Plavix and baby asprin for my heart problems. The surgeon wanted me to stay off the asa and hold the plavix after surgery. My cardioligist insisted I go back one both. Surgeon gave me cytotec to take with the asa. So far so good.
