How the Lap-Band actually works, fills and refills
monkeyband replied to Wendell Edwards's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi everyone...so i got my surgery notes from my surgeon in MC so i can go in to my local Dr for my first fill, since i no longer feel any restriction. Its been 7 weeks since my surgery. Im concerned because in the notes its written that i have 4.5 ML capacity band, and that during surgery, the surgeon had filled me with 2mL. That leaves me with 2.5 ML to play with for fills for the rest of my journey. I have 65 pounds to lose. How can this possibly happen? What if i reach capacity and feel no more restriction? Does anybody else have such a small band and reached capacity? -
OK so i don't really understand. I was banded 10/10 and was filled with 2cc in my 10cc band. Right now i feel no restriction. So if i go get a fill, and if i feel restriction, is that supposed to last me forever, or do i stop feeling restriction after a while?? And if i stop feeling restriction after a while, do i have to go get another fill and do it again? what if i reach 10cc's?? Why do fills not last?

Thanks Mimilou! That helps i think i will follow your plan. My 1 week will be up this Friday and will be counting minutes. I really really hope this lap band thing works for people that don;t have much to lose. I need to lose about 70 pounds! I think the thing im finding the most difficult right now is my emotions...im going through a myriad of feelings, about wether i did the right thing or i just made a really expensive and painful mistake. This forum helps a lot, seeing that lots of other people are in the same boat. Although i was reading a thread about lapband failure and that scared the sh*t out of me. PLease keep me updated on your progress and i will do the same. -

Dont be nervous, trust me its a bigger deal in your head then it actually is. You will feel pain and discomfort, but nothing that pain meds can't take care of easily. And you heal really quickly, i feel better and better each day. The only thing that bugs me now is the gas pain, and thats gone down too. So relax..my lap band surgery was actually the first surgery ive ever had in my life, so trust me i was nervous too. But i went to a doctor who has performed over 4000 of these in Cancun, MX so i knew i was in good hands, and they took care of me wonderfully. Hospital staff make all the difference and who you bring with you too. -

Hi everyone!!! Im got banded on Friday October 10th in Cancun Mexico. So i guess im on day 5 post-op and i feel like someone died. I can't belive what a food addict i was before i got banded!!!! Im literally mourning my old food habits. Im like borderline depressed just thinking about 'my last supper' and the burger i had from Chillis the day before i left. Ive been sucking on gatorade, chicken broth, water and teeny weeny bits of jello and im soooooooo sad. Believe or not, i actually gained 1 1/2 pounds 2 days after surgery, but now im showing a 1 pound loss (day 5). Im thinking this is because i started weighing 200 lbs, so my weight loss might be slower. Im having tons of gass pain...and my port site is killing me. It hurts to laugh and cry. So now i just have this shocked look on my face all day. This better be worth it everyone ..... By the way, im reading very mixed mesages about when to start 'full liquids' and how long i should be doing that. I would cut off my little finger right now for some milk or cream of mushroom soup. Can anyone help? Oh and good luck to everyone that is still getting banded!! I'll pray that God keeps you all. -
I have my surgery on Oct 10th in Cancun MX and im TERRIFIED..!

I haven't slept in the 4 days between confirming my appointment and now! I have never had surgery before in my life and im so scared of the effects of the anesthetic and the pain, and if i'll be able to walk after! How long does the pain last, and i don't want scars on my belly! Are they really visible? Ive been reading that you get gas too..how embarrassing for the person who is with you. Does this happen immiediatly after surgery, or does it kick in after a while? How soon do you have to see a fill Dr. after? Do you lose weight slower if you start off with a lower BMI (33.7)? What is the most uncomfortable part of the surgery?? I think my anxiety is obvious. Any help or reassurance that anyone can give me will help!! THanks
