HEy, Hey!!!! I am just overweight now!!!!
Don replied to Don's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry, it is 36 pounds in a month. I use the 287 as my highest weight to keep me motivated. Over the last 10 years I had lost in the neighborhood of 50 + pounds, but I still had to have a triple bypass 2 years ago (and my bad cholesterol was only 75) and my diabetes was ragingly worse. I was on 90 units of Levimir (long acting insulin) a day and between 20-30 units of Novalog (fast acting insulin) a day., as well as 2000 mg. of Glucophage. So, even though I was no longer morbidly obese (287). I decided to have the surgery. I know longer use Glucophage and only 5-10 units of insulin a day. THAT IS A 90-95% IMPROVEMENT ON INSULIN ALONE AND 100% ON GLUCOPHAGE. So the surgery did what I wanted already. Don -
Finally found greek yogurt I like
Don replied to Rev Me Up!'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Where did greek yogurt come from? I've never heard of it until the last year or so. Did they have it before, but just not market it? -
When you get to eating regular food (whatever that is), is sushi in real moderation allowed? How about pizza, if you eat just the cheese, some meat, and the sauce (no crust)?

Ha ha ha HALF and egg. I ate HALF and egg
Don replied to apple-saucy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I remember week 2 ( 2 weeks ago) when I could have cream of wheat. Pre-surgery I had to fix more than one serving...like 1 1/2 to 2 measured servings ( 4 1/2 -6 tbsp of dry cereal). After surgery 1 Tbsp. filled me up. I couldn't believe it. -
Newbie, Sleeved on 4/13. When can I smoke?
Don replied to Biiggmike23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a real campaigner about quitting smoking of any kind. I have lost 2 brother-in-laws to it. One died at 37 after having a leg cut off and then his genitals. The other died last fall at 66, but he had had the veins in his legs stripped, carotid artery stripped, and 2 quadruple bypasses. He was the only one in the family at a normal weight, so it had to be the smoking. Do everything you can to quit!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Learning about this new sleeve - TMI alert
Don replied to Beadingnurse's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
3 week post-surgery appointment today and one with the endocrinologist in another town. Had breakfast and wife forgot my protein shake for my lunch so after the 2 appointments I was getting a bit hungry. So I graduated to soft foods. Went to Bob Evans and had a grilled salmon fillet (very, very tender) and some of the steamed veggies. Only ate about 1/4th of the fillet, but I ate too fast. I was miserable for hours. I NEED TO SLOW DOWN!!!! -

Day 24: Dying to be thin?
Don replied to crosswind's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I realized exercise and diet was not the answer when I saw Oprah do her yo-yoing and I thought if she can't do it whit a personal trainer and a personal chef, what chance do us mere mortals have at losing the weight and keeping it off. I was also on over 100 units a day of insulin, so that makes it harder yet. I am still having pain front and back, but I look in the mirror and look how little insulin ( 3 weeks out and using less that 10 units a day) I am using now and it is just fine!!!!!! -
Did they shave your stomach?
Don replied to kemo46's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes they did, but not my chest. Not going swimming anytime soon anyways, but it sure looks weird!!!! If I go into a pool I usually wear a t-shirt as I have a big scar from my triple bypass, scars from my gall bladder surgery (laproscopically), and an ugly one from my appendix (in 1957). Clamps were all the rage then and my appendix scar therefore is huge. I tried to insist they shave the chest too, as many times those ekg monitor things are put on with super glue or gorilla glue. One time when they pulled the leads off, the patch looked like someone cut it off from a teddy bear and YOU KNOW WHAT IT FELT LIKE!!!!!!!! Peace out If my Dr.s' scale is anywhere close to my surgeons I am closing in on 27 pounds off in 3 weeks. I didn't think mine would come off that fast as my BMI was not terribly high and in the past 2 years I had already lost 35 pounds. Don -
I will be 3 weeks post-op on Monday. More than any stomach pain, my back is killing me. I rarely have had lower back pain, but about 4 weeks pre-surgery I was diagnosed with some disk bulges and a pinched S-1 nerve. I can handle about 3-4 hours of being up and doing things and then I have to lay down and ice my back/ Anyone else experienced this?

Does Gastric Sleeve Surgery "cure" diabetes?
Don replied to MINI-Me's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am a type 2 , been diagnosed for 15 years and it has gotten massively worse. That is my reason for the VSG surgery. I had lost 50 pounds over the years on my own and kept it off, however I will still on 2000 mg. of Glucophage a day, 90 units of long-acting insulin a day, and 3 pre-meal time injections of short-acting insulin. So I had my surgery on 4-4-11. I no longer take glucophage and I only take 5-7 units of fast acting insulin a day!!!!! So I figure my usage is down over 90%. Very dramatic for 2 weeks I would say!!!!! -
Well I am 2 weeks and 1 day past surgery. I knew with the RNY they often get to throw their insulin away right away....didn't know for sure what the sleeve would do for my insulin needs. Pre--surgery I was on 90 units of long-acting and 1 unit fast-acting insulin for every 10 grams of carbs at mealtime. Well I am happy to report that I am taking less than 10 units of the fast-acting insulin a day....that's all. I was also on glucophage....like 2000 mg. a day. I am not taking any now. Now for my worries. I didn't put it all together when I scheduled my surgery, but May may be a tough month for me. On May 15 my daughter graduates from college, so were are going to Chicago for the weekend. I don't see too many temptations or problems with that. The next weekend they are having a memorial service and spreading of my wife's brother's ashes. Well I married a woman who likes to eat, as does her whole family, so they are planning a big meal. I am planning on taking a good book and try to be sociable, but her family....well let's say 2 very dysfunctional people found each other and her family is a prime example. The next weekend a friend is getting married.....a senior citizen thing....they dated in college, married other people, divorced their spouses and have been pretty much a thing since the late 1980's. Out of the blue they decided to get hitched. Now there are no worries there. I know at this point I couldn't even do a sliver of a piece of cake. Well I am lower in weight than since my mid to late 20s.

Just 12 more POUNDS and then I am saying bye-bye to 200's forever!
Don replied to Weightbgone's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
16 for me....if the local hospital scales match my. dr.'s. I haven't been this low in weight since my early 20's.......we are talking 30-35 years here. A friend who also had the surgery said she had clothes in all of the sizes. I told her that I needed to go to the resale shops. Even if I did have them.....think leisure suits, bell-bottoms, etc. Luckily we have about 5-6 shops in 20 miles. Don -
how long were you off work?
Don replied to MeMeMEEE's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeved on April 4 ....7 days for me, but what I returned to work for was to play for a wedding. The next day I returned to work at school, but again I warm the kid's lunches, watch them on the playground and then work with them in a computer lab. I feel like my butt is busted now, bit it is due to back pain and not the surgery. I had some lower back problems crop up 2 months ago. I hope the surgery will help with that in the long run. -
...when you have a weight loss. Had my one week check-up today and since my pre-surgery appointment in late March, I have lost 18 pounds ( so this includes pre-surgery diet and 1 week of clear liquids).
-
Well all of us are one week out now.....How is everyone doing??? It was a bit more than I expected, but overall I am doing fine. Not hungry at all. Went with wife today as she had a fish and chips meal. I had one spoon of her cottage cheese and sat there and drank iced tea. Playing for a wedding tomorrow morning (yes a Monday morning) and then go for my one week check up. So far food commercials don't bother me either. I am just not hungry. Looking at my belly I do look like I lost a sword fight and got stabbed a few times, have some pain, but overall it's been an easy week. Don

Heart problems prior to Gastric Sleeve?
Don replied to rosepetals's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My endocrinologist was iffy about it, but surprisingly my cardiologist was enthusiastic about it. He said it was the smartest thing I could do. I am over 100 units of insulin a day now and that makes traditional weight loss almost impossible. 44 hours to GO <<<<<<<<<<< -
Wow........didn't know there would be so many.....I'm on for Monday also. In Traverse City , Michigan with Dr. Nizzi. I am only 2 years late in having a bariatric surgery. I was scheduled for June of 2009. Had all approvals and the date set, then in early March of that year I had some shoulder blade pain. I had 2 really bad nights so after work I went to the ER. Had a super sharp nurse and Dr. They caught that it might be heart and 45 minutes later I was headed ti the nearest cardiac unit and 1 and 1/2 days later I had a triple bypass. So two years later, I have done fairly well at keeping 40 pounds off I lost before and after that surgery, but am on 90 units of Levimir a day and 15-20 of Novalog.I decided to do it for my health. I am on BP meds, cholesterol meds, other diabetic meds, aas well as a BiPap machine. My BMI is borderline, but with those conditions I was approved. At my age the Dr. strongly recommended the VSG as with the Roux en Y you can't take the aspirin that I am on for the rest of my days. Looking forward, but also scared. Almost cancelled earlier in the week. Have been very busy for the 10 weeks prior to this with being a music director for the Spring Musical nearby, so haven't had much time until this week to think about it and now we are 3 days away.....10:45 MOnday a.m. Good luck to you all. Don

I am having it done on April 4 and I am 60 going on 61. I was scheduled for a Roux en Y 2 years ago, but decided to have triple bypass instead(LOL). Will let you know..........
-
In 2009 I had all of my tests in and visits done and ready to have a Roux en Y in June of 2009. In January I had my usual 3 month lab test done for my diabetes and my bad cholesterol was 75. I was working on weight loss pre-surgery and successfully lost 20 pounds. In late February I had some shoulder blade pain that I attributed to long hours and poor posture while playing the piano and being on the computer, and on a fall I had taken. Early March I had 2 really bad nights with the pain. So I went to work and after work I said maybe I should do something about that pain, so I went to the ER. It was really packed so I put down I had chest pains so I could get done earlier. The joke was on me. I was in the middle of a cardiac event and left on an ambulance 45 minutes later headed to the nearest cath lab. A day and a half later I had a 3XCABG. After that I lost another 25 pounds and was right on the borderline of the 35 BMI index and in my mind put off the gastric surgery (plus it was way too soon). Here I am 18 months later, 22 pounds heavier, and having problems with lousy diabetes control (as well as sleep apnea, high blood pressure). I went back to see the Bariatric Surgeon and he suggested the sleeve surgery as our Blue Cross in Michigan recently approved the surgery for people with lower BMI's and because I have to take a daily aspirin. Are there many people who have had a CABG and then a vertical sleeve or Roux en Y? Is that a recommendation you would make? I have made a complete recovery from the CABG and had few complications no cognitive impairment, no depression, etc.I was very lucky. I claimed it was that 3 churches were praying for me not to lose their organist/music director.

New to the group and have a Question
Don replied to Don's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has anyone else had heart surgery and then the sleeve?
