I was a low bmi patient (36) and my Dr tried to talk me into gastric instead of band. His reasoning was that gastric takes out more of the human screw up element. He said most people who choose band loose and maintain about 50% of their excess weight compared to bypass patient who loose and maintain 75% of their excess weight. He said to loose 100% means you have to really put in the extra work and effort on your own. I still opted for banding.

~Calling all May 26-ers!~
jessicastatzer replied to sailorChristy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi all.. I made it! My surgery went well..."text book" is the word the surgeon used. However I did suffer from some pretty rough nausea afterward though. I did well to get down about 2 cups of Water all day yesterday. I am having some gas pains through my shoulders and back but are taking gas-x. I feel a bit dizzy and puky when I walk around this morning. I just sipped down a few ounces of Protein drink and some watered down white grape juice and waiting to see how I handle it. The only significant pain is at the port site. It hurts when sitting down or getting up but its not unmanageable. I slept on the couch last night kind of half propped up on my non-port side. I slept well thanks to my pain medication. I don't own a set of scales so I requested a "nice" set as a get well present from my mom when she visits this afternoon. I feel like I must be down after basically 4 days of eating nothing. I'm having a hard time deciding if I am hungry or not. Anyone else having this problem? -

Hi All, The big day is tomorrow! My Dr required a 2 week low carb diet and a 2 day clear liquid diet. I was really hungry yesterday and dreading the second day of Clear liquids but surprisingly today seems to be a little easier so far. I look forward to checking in with you guys and comparing stories! Good luck! Jessica -
My surgery is also tomorrow. Going without my diet soda is one of my biggest concerns also. My husband suggested taking caffeine pills but I'm not sure what the doc would think of that. Has anyone tried it?

Is anyone keeping their surgery a secret?
jessicastatzer replied to Dreamjeans's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am scheduled for surgery next week. I only told my husband prior to being approved by my insurance. I thought there was no point mentioning it until I knew for sure that it was going to happen. Since approval I have told friends, family and coworkers openly about it. I made the decision to do this because I work in a public school in a small community. A year and a half ago one of my co-workers told everyone she was having gal bladder surgery and then miraculously starting dropping lots of weight afterwards. She looks fantastic now but people at work are always saying "I heard she had lapband....I heard she admitted to to so and so" "I don't know why she won't admit it now that she's lost all the weight".....etc..etc. I don't know if she had the procedure or not but I do know that if she did people don't concentrate on being supportive and happy for her...they focus on wondering if she did or didn't have the surgery. I guess she would feel foolish to admit to it now if shes been lying about it all this time. I don't want that to be me. This made me decide to be open about it. I am owning up to the surgery and I hope I have great results and everyone can say yes she had lapband and yes she looks fabulous! -
True? Divorce after WLS within 3 years? Why?
jessicastatzer replied to betrthnever's topic in The Lounge
My husband puts not effort into our relationship and is never interested in sex. I constantly feel unwanted and unloved. I have tried to talk to him about this several times and he never replies and just tries to avoid the conversation. I am scheduled for weight loss surgery in a week and a half (thanks to his great insurance). I am sure of one thing..there will be a change in my life...either I will get skinny and he's going to get with it or I'm going to get skinny and get out. -

I also go for my pre-op on May 20....Surgery Date May 26. That means pre-liquid diet on Memorial Day :smile2: -
Update: I contacted this offices this morning and they told me that they mailed out a "packet" to me yesterday. I was told I would have to log online and fill out some information and attend a seminar at the mall. Once I have done those things they told me I would actually be able to call them and make an appointment.

Today will make 2 weeks since my referral has been faxed to Dr. Kramer's office and I still haven't been given any information. I called yesterday and spoke with someone who asked my name, birthday, and what type of insurance and she said she's call me back and let me know something. I didn't hear back from them yesterday. I'm going to call again today. I'm starting to get frustrated and would like to know something...anything.

Aivey I am also a teacher..I am hoping to have my surgery around Spring Break but have days saved up if I need to take more time off or in case it doesn't work out for me to have the surgery during that time
-
Thanks for all the info. espeically the "hidden cost" that we should expect. I am just trying to be as informed as possible before I actually walk into his office. I have one other question that you all may not be able to answer. My bmi is between 36-37. If I drop below 35 during my pre-op diet will that make me inelligible for the surgery? I am willing to start working hard now to start the process of getting the weight off if I think it will help but I don't want to do anything to risk being told no to the surgery. Any advice about this? Can I be upfront about this question with Dr. Kramer?
-
Have you started your 6 month Dr. supervised diet yet? I know that my insurance requires it and my Dr. told me that she believes he also requires it before surgery. I just started mine last week so a long way to go I guess. What are you taking with you to your first appointment? I am taking a list of the high blood pressure medications Ive been on from my pharmacist and copy of my bank statements for the past year showing that I've been enrolled in Weight Watchers. Do you have any other suggestions? I just want to go in as informed as possible and I want to do and say the right things to insure that I get accepted. Are you a self pay or will your insurance cover it?

I was also referred about a week ago to Dr. Kramer in Kingsport. I haven't heard back from his office yet either. Once you are referred are you guaranteed an appointment with him or is there a chance he could look at your referral and turn you down for an appointment? I'm really anxious to get started with the process and keep thinking of all the what ifs!! My BMI is 36 with a 5 year history of uncontrollable high blood pressure. I'm 28.
