    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

That makes total sense to me. I am 19 days out, and I felt prepared before surgery. However, the restrictions, the effort to get in fluids, the different sensations, the lack of solid food, the changes in the internal plumbing... I could not have prepared for any of that. One must experience these things to really understand them. That's one reason that I am very grateful for this support forum! So many people can understand where you have been and where you are going. There are people here who are 10+ years out, and they are still very willing to share their wisdom and experiences for us newbies. I'm sending you internet hugs and so many well wishes for tomorrow! It is rough at first, but every single day does get a little bit better

    Pain after surgery?

Awesome! I am 17 days out and have finally started getting some energy back because I'm now able to eat yogurt, thinned refried beans, hummus, and tuna.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

OMG, some of the food dreams I have had right before and since my surgery have been crazy- me eating lots of pasta and pizza and chocolate and oh gosh, candy and snack bars. Grabbing handfuls of the things and stuffing them in my mouth 😂
  5. 11days post-op. I will get my two week checkup in two days. Everything seems to be healing well; I have been fortunate to be off work and able to lay down a lot. However, I have been able to work up to walking 1.5 miles per day. I wish I could stretch a bit more, but I want to be very careful with my healing incisions- I've got 5 of them to look after.

Swallowing is getting better. I have been eating some sugar free popsicles in between shots of ProT Gold and protein shakes. I'm really looking forward to getting the go ahead for soft foods like eggs and yogurt in a couple of days.

Something that helped me today was something I saw someone else mention in a forum... I cannot recall who it was. But they mentioned that they drink "proffee" in the mornings. As a fan of the occasional black coffee with hot chocolate, I made a version this morning with decaf coffee and a warmed up chocolate protein drink. T'was divine, and gave me a feeling of normalcy for the first time in awhile.

I should have just shut my mouth....

My program required me to meet with a psychologist that I had never seen before, for all of 30 minutes, for my final approval. It sounds like you are working very hard on yourself! Sorry to hear that this is a bump in the road for you, but I am positive that if you keep persevering, you will get your clearance.
  7. I cried today, and had regrets about getting the surgery.

I went for a short outdoor walk after the sun went down this evening. The blaring heat was giving my neighborhood a break, so I thought, why not?

I walked one direction for a quarter of a mile, and then turned around to come home. There was a slight downward slope at the beginning of the walk, which meant that there was a slight upward slope back. Well, I started sweating before I knew it. Not a whole lot, but enough to have some beads roll south. At that moment, all ll I could think about was all of those precious fluids that I have worked so hard to consume today were going right out of me! I thought, how in the hell am I going to be able to replace all of those before I go to bed tonight?? I was sweating, thirsty, and still had a bit of a stroll ahead of me. I had not thought to bring water with me on such a short walk.

Get home, sip, sob for a bit, sip, shower, sip. Then I remember that I had premixed a protein-enhanced electrolyte drink earlier in the day, and it was sitting cold in the refrigerator. That seemed to take care of me, along with sipping some more water. I had to stay up late to get it down, but I did it, and was able to come back to a better emotional baseline.

I'm only one week out, still fresh and healing, so I'm definitely giving myself some grace tonight.

    First appt Tomm, super nervous!

I am like you, I need to drink a LOT of water. Before surgery, it was nothing for me to drink 80 oz. or more of water every day. I'm 6 days post-op with RYGB and the most water I've been able to directly drink is 56 oz. in one day. I'm still on a liquid diet, and that's definitely helping me get more water in. From what I understand, as time goes on we are able to drink more normally than we can right after surgery. I started with a consult back in December of 2022. I'm 5'10, and always hovered around 250-260. I could focus on food and exercise and could never break 230. I also have been able to find flattering clothes and seemed to be able to "carry my weight well," like you, too. As of yesterday, I was down to 220 from my highest weight ever at 276 a few years ago. When I saw that number, I could actually imagine being below 200 for the first time in my adult life, and I got emotional. I don't wanna tell you what to do, but going in for a consult might help you make your decision. My program and insurance required me to be on a medically supervised diet for at least 6 months before surgery. And I had to prove that I could lose at least a bit of weight by tracking my food intake, taking nutrition education classes, and basically having them monitor my progress with an app on my phone. They were able to get Wegovy for me to jump start my weight loss, and I was at 224 the night before I went in for surgery. I weighed 263 when I began the program. Hope some of this helps, and I truly wish you good luck as you learn more!
  9. Six days post-op. I believe the collagen supplements are helping me heal. I am starting to crave eating real food again.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I'm not Steve, but thought my experience might help allay your fears. Sips. Constant sips. If I get up to go to the bathroom at night, I pause to get a couple sips in. I am 5 days RYGB post-op, and it has been constant sipping. I could down 12 ounces of water in one gulp before surgery. I'm also eating broths for all meals, and having one sugar-free Gatorade a day.

    Pain after surgery?

Oh yeah, I was definitely sent home with pain meds, and then have the okay to take 500mg Tylenol in between those doses. I do know that the hole in the diaphragm was stitched smaller to keep the hiatal hernia in check. The surgeon told me that all of the pulling on the diaphragm was the cause of the pain. The pain would radiate out into my shoulders and neck. A very crazy feeling. Simply breathing was painful. Breathing is much easier today, and I'm grateful for that! Hope that the GERD stays in check for you! "Knocks on wood," too.
  14. Today, I am four days post-op RYGB with a hernia repair. The hernia repair has been painful and the hardest part to deal with. I'm finally able to cough a little bit and hope to walk .6 miles today.

    Pain after surgery?

I had a hernia repair, too. I'm 4 days out from surgery, but that first and second day were horrible. I truly hope to never experience a sore diaphragm again.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I had my surgery on the 9th... This has been a roller coaster ride! My pain levels were up to 10 a few times with tears in my eyes, but I am feeling much better than I did on the day of surgery. Hope you are moving around a bit more, too!

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

My surgery date is August 9th, and I'm on day 3 of my pre-op diet. Less than 1000 calories, 2 protein shakes and two low carb snacks, and 1 low carb meal at supper. Days 10-13 will be liquid diet only. I've been able to lose 30 pounds before surgery with the help of injectables, increasing exercise, and modifying diet. Off of the injectables now and have had to limit exercise. I've been struggling with the feelings of hunger.
  20. 10 days out from surgery and found this online community for support. I'm on day 3 of the pre-op diet, and have been having dreams about food.
