  1. I am 1 year post-op (exactly today!) In the months after the surgery, I have not had any significant issues with taste or food aversion. There were a couple of changes with foods that I used to love that, now, I could take them or leave them. I travel a lot for business, and when I am away from home eating in restaurants, I have started having experiences where certain foods taste like... seafood. I *hate* seafood in all forms, and always have. Meat is the most frequent problem, especially beef (except ground beef which is fine). Chicken is never a problem. I was just in China for 3 weeks, in many different cities, and everywhere I went, things were tasting fishy, especially meat. It wasn't just that something was prepared with fish sauce - I checked. Over and over and over again in city after city and restaurant after restaurant. (I have traveled to China before and loved the food; this time not so much.) But this wasn't just China - it has happened in other places as well - just not as often as in China. Now that I am back home with my normal food and normal recipes, there is no problem at all, however, at home I eat primarily chicken so maybe I would have an issue with beef tasting like seafood here too. Of course, I will discuss this with my doctor at my 1-year post-op appointment, but I am curious about other people's experiences with taste-related changes.

  5. I had my surgery on July 25th, RNY. I'm in Europe and we have very loose guidelines around eating afterwards (pureed and soft for several days, and then solids as we feel we can handle them). For the first month, nothing - and I mean NOTHING - upset my stomach or made me feel sick. I bounced right back from surgery and worried that my appetite was too healthy. Now, suddenly at the 1 month mark, I've lost my appetite completely and I feel quite nauseous when I eat anything at all. Has anyone else ever had a change in their reactions to food like that? From good to bad?

Eating too much 6 days post op RNY

Hello from the Netherlands! I had my surgery on July 25th, and it sounds like our programs are nearly identical. Soft foods for a few days, and then we're allowed to progress to normal when we feel we are ready. I had the same concerns that you have, and I talked to my nutritionist. She assured me that ~1000 calories a day is fine, that I shouldn't even be counting calories (yeah, right) and everyone responds differently to different kinds of foods - we can't compare ourselves to others.

  8. Hi, I had RNY on Tuesday, July 25th. My clinic advised against protein shakes afterwards but has me making my own liquid drinks with defined amounts of proteins, vegetables and added broths, etc. I’m not even able to eat half of what they told me I should try for. Is this normal? Does it just take time?

New member, bypass on 25 July

I’m feeling quite ok! Although very tired and a bit sore which I suppose is to be expected.

    Pre-Surgery Liquid Diet

I found that they key for me was staying BUSY. I worked obsessively with my job, but also projects at home to make sure the house was in great shape for when I got home from surgery. Bottom line: this will pass!
  11. Hi, I’m new here. I had a gastric bypass (RNY) on Tuesday. I was back home Wednesday and doing ok. I’m living and working abroad in a country where I am not completely fluent in the local language so I wasn’t put into a support group with locals, but hoping I can find that here. ☺️ So far, it certainly hasn’t been a pleasant experience but it’s also nowhere near the nightmare I expected. (I know it’s still early days!)
