    Let's be honest about exercise

Love it and I exercise 5X a week at 55 minutes each session.

How did you get started exercising?

Several hours after surgery I went for short walks to build up my strength and get rid of gas. I was sore and in pain, but I still went walking. When I got home, I would go for very short walks around the lake and then go to sleep. It was right after Thanksgiving Day 2008, when I finally felt enough energy to kick up my walking to the treadmill with weights and an incline. Ever since then, I have gradually added more distance. For me, I try a little bit harder every day. I don't compete against others, I just try to out due my last personal best. And I don't pressure myself to do what I know I am not physically able to do. I know one day, I will achieve my goals, but in order to do that I must start at the beginning and give myself time.

    was it worth it??

I am 10-weeks out and think it is worth it. I am down 30 pounds and have lots of energy, so to me that is totally worth it. So far I have three fills completed. 5cc in a 10cc band. Right now I have great restriction, but it does not last very long. I am hopeful that I will find my sweet spot.
  4. Ah, love that family drama. :-) Seriously, I didn't deal with it, because I did not tell friends, family, my kids, or co-workers. However, I did tell my sister, because she was my emergency contact in case something went wrong during the surgery.

    Hunger Post Op

The day after surgery I was hungry and the doctor placed 3cc in my band at the time of surgery.

    pain- how long?

I had problems with pain meds during my recovery at the hospital. I felt dizzy, weak, and nauseas. The doctor gave me an anti-nausea patch to wear, which really helped me tolerate the pain meds. Anyway, after I was released from the hospital, I took liquid lori-tab for pain. So, I slept. I slepted a lot, which is good for recovery. When I was not sleeping, I was taking short walks and drinking fluids. I stopped taking the liquid lori-tab on day 5 post-op, which was my 3rd day at home from the hospital. I was sore, but not in pain. I took liquid Tylenol for the soreness. By day 7-post op, I felt great. I was driving, cleaning, and shopping on day 7. Again, I was sore, but not in pain. As far as returning to work in three days after surgery, I could not do that. I stayed home for two-weeks. If you are in pain, then take the pain meds as they will help you rest, thereby allowing your body to recover. When your are not sleeping, ingest your fluids. Good luck!
  7. I weigh myself every morning before I jump in the shower. The only weigh-in that I count as official is the one from my monthly doctor visit. I measure inches lost once a month too, when I return from my doctor's visit. I journal the numbers, so I can reflect where I was and where I am going.

    Waiting on approval

Good luck. I hope your approval comes quickly.
  9. I am not sure there is a better time of day that is more effective for exercise. That is the first I ever heard that mentioned. I can say for me personally, I am so not a morning person. The first thing I do, besides beat the hell out of the alarm clock for having the audacity to wake me up at such an ungodly hour, is to get to the coffee pot. After, the java is flowing through my veins, I am scampering around the house getting ready for my commute to work. By the end of the day and after my commute home, I am ready to blow off some stress and energy on my treadmill. So, during the work week, I exercise at night. On the weekends, I exercise day or evening, but never in the morning.
  10. This is probably not the answer you would like to hear. I would recommend sitting down with your doctor and telling them you need clarification. Your best source of information for you and only you is your doctor. People who post on this forum, for the most part, are not in the medical profession and cannot advise you how to treat you for your LapBand. All we can do is share our personal experiences. So my suggestion is refer to your medical doctor to determine if you are on track. And to take what you read here with a grain of salt. Only you and your doctor really know what is best for you. Good luck!

So close, yet so far away....

Do you have a lunch hour? Can you go to the gym on your lunch hour and get a quick workout? If not, can you go for a walk on your lunch hour, if the weather permits? If not, perhaps use your lunch hour to use the stairs more at your work, use them as an aerobic StairMaster workout. Don't forget to boost up your Protein with your workouts. It will help you feel full and build muscle.

what is going on with me???

I have not dealt with anything like that, but I have read lots of threads on this forum of people who get sick with cold/flu/sinus and become very tight. They usually go in for an unfill, so they can keep fluids down. Hopefully your surgeon will be able to help you tomorrow.
  13. My insurance case manager told me not to go below a 40BMI on the 6-month supervised diet, because I risked not being approved. I stayed above the 40BMI, I until I was approved to see the surgeon. Once I saw the surgeon, I was able to really start losing weight, without the fear of being denied the banding surgery.

    help me please

I was going to suggest COBRA as well, but that can be very expensive, but cheaper than taking out a loan. Sorry you are going through this.

    Capital One Medical Loan

I utilized a Capital One medical loan for my Lasik Eye surgery in 2007. They did not issue the check to me directly, but to my Lasik Surgeon, which occurred once the surgeon approved me for the procedure and scheduled a eye surgery date. I had a busy doctor, so the process from start to finish took about 4-weeks. Their center's financial director helped me with the process. I would suggest calling Capital One and finding out the terms of the loan and when payemtn will be disbursed.

When did you get your surgery date

Once I completed the required upper GI and H-pylori test, my doctor submitted everything to the insurance company on October 15. The insurance company approved the procedure on October 16. I was then given a surgery date of November 11. I think my scenario might reflect what occurs on average to other people. My doctor has lots of patients at different stages of the process, so I do think I could have received a surgery appointment any sooner than what I did. Plus, I did have to meet the surgeon one more time and complete hospital pre-registration and pre-surgery lab work. And most importantly, I needed to plan for my work absence and my after-care recovery. So 4-weeks notice gave me the time I needed to get everything done.

    Smartlipo?

You should perhaps post this under the cosmetic and reconstructive surgery thread. You might get a response there. Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery - Lap Band Surgery and Lap Band Discussion Forum
  18. Congrats on your impending surgery date, which is just around the corner. But don't you have to keep on the liquid diet after your surgery? Or does your doctor not require that?
  19. Oh spud.mama, I totally know where you are coming from in regards to wanting to hide. I have been over weight for several years and had gained over 55 pounds in the last 6-years. It was horrible. I felt horrible both physically and mentally. I started to hide, not accepting invitations to go out. Not wanting to travel for work events. Not wanting to be seen in public. And this is so not like me, because I am a total extrovert, but not when I am heavy. Exercising at my heaviest weight was difficult with ankle, knee, and back pain...not to mention all the joint pain I felt just from walking. I knew that something had to change and that I needed lots of help. So, I met my PC in January 2008 and I am now on my journey. My surgery was 11/11/08. I have lost 30 pounds and I have lots of energy. It is amazing how much more active I am. I am actually jogging for short periods of time. (My goal is to complete a 3K without stopping to take a break.) Anyway, my health has improved both physically and mentally. I am back out in society and accepting invitations from family and friends. I am travelling. I feel no shame. You will gain your Power back with this surgery. There are a lot of requirements that you must complete to reach your surgery date, but don't let the process stop you from achieving a healthy life whereby you will find the courage to step outside back into society. As far as a supervised exercise program, I have never heard of that before. As far as losing weight prior to the first doctor appointment, I waited until I saw the doctor then once he logged in my heaviest weight, I began the supervised doctor/nutritionist diet. Good luck!

When did you have to pay?

Well to be fair, I did have some complications, which required me to stay in the hospital for 2.5 days. It was ver expenses and thank-goodness the insurance company is covering those expenses.

    Shoulder Pain

I am sorry this happening to you. Walking is really the way to get rid of trapped gas. Gas-x really did nothing for me.

When did you have to pay?

When I pre-registered at the hospital 4-days prior to surgery, they told me the same thing. All co-pays and such had to be paid on the day of surgery. I called my case manager at my insurance company to find out if I had a co-pay and how much? I did not want any surprises. My insurance, Blue Shield said because my doctor coded my procedure as medically necessary that I did not have to make any co-pays for the hospital stay. I guess that is true, because I never received an invoice demanding payment. I did receive an itemized statement from the hospital for services rendered and it was around $82K. I about died when I saw that. There is no way, I could ever afford a hospital bill like that. As far as in your case, I would think someone would get their hospital bills within four-weeks of their procedure/hospital stay.

    Exercising on pre op diet

I walked on the treadmill, but it was a very slow walk. It was hard to find the energy, but I wanted to have a quick recovery from surgery and walking helps with that.
