  1. I had a vertical banded gastroplasty in 2004, with a scar from my breastbone to my navel. I was left high and dry after the first 3 months or so post op, as my surgeon left medicine. It took me almost 2 years to get on to proper solid food not mush or liquids. I experimented and found that fibres of meat irritated, so I went veggie. I went from 25 stone to 17 stone in about 2 years. Remained stable for a couple of years, then put weight on without changing anything....until now; and I weigh 26 stone. I am in preparation for a second op, but am struggling to lose weight. The diet given me by my new surgeon added 1 stone and I still have libt to lose a year later.
  2. :tongue_smilie:Hi there folks, it's Lynn from Darlington, UK. I had a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty in 2004. In my first year I dropped from 26 stone(364 lbs), to 17 1/2 stone(245 lbs). In that year I was still only on liquids and mush. In the following 4 years I managed to get back onto 'normal' food, but my weight has crept up. I now weigh 22 stone 5 lbs(315 lbs) again. It is still fluctuating, up more than down. I can still only eat approximately one small cupped hand of food. Most solids, like meat, are rejected by my stomach, so I am mostly vegetarian these days. I find it hard to reconcile the fact that I do not eat much in quantity to my old diet, but am still putting weight on. I have had no follow up from my surgeon for years, it only lasted the first year. I had no counselling before or after and i only saw the dietitian half a dozen times in the first year. That was almost pointless as they did not have any idea about post op diets for VBG patients. Has anyone else experienced this post op weight gain?

Thanx for a quick reply. Just found this site 4 years on. A half life? lol. Not even that really. I will start looking in earnest for VBG specific sites. All the threads on this site are for bands with fills? I did email a Dr S Somers in UK. Hoping he will have some answers for me. Lynn

Hi there. I have an underactive thyroid. Been diagnosed about 17 years now. I take 300mcg daily and it has never really helped my weight loss. I had a Vertical Banded Gastroplasty done in 2004. Initially I lost weight-26st to 17 1/2 st in a year. But...its all going back on. Up to 22 st now. I have no follow on help as my surgeon is no longer working. I am totally at a loss what to do and where to go. I do not have any idea what you mean when you talk of 'fills'...Mine is a fixed band with staples.

Hi there. I had a VBG done in 2004. From the start I dropped from 26 st to 17 1/2 st in first year. Then, I was 'orphaned' due to my specialist being erm....under investigation for another matter. He since stopped being a surgeon. Since 2005 I have had no follow on support and am back up to 22 st 5 lbs. Nothing has changed with my diet except that I have gone back to my old comfort eating...happy, sad, bored, whatever... even though I eat less, I am gaining weight. I do not know what to do. Have any of you experienced this? Lynn:frown:
