Breaking notsobad got a reaction from NettyD in September 2023 Surgery buddies
    Hello all,
I was posting on the "September surgery buddies" topic and somehow it seemed to get blended with the September topic from past years and so I figured why not just start a new one for us. I'm scheduled for what my surgeon calls a Duodenal Switch Loop September 19, 2023.

Hello @Readybutscared I am similar in size to you 5'7 1/2" and currently 240 pre-surgery. My DS Loop surgery is schedule for 9/19. I guess we''ll see how it turns out. Of course I am nervous. I'm 68 years old. I feel like I should have looked into the WL surgery years ago. I've struggled with weigh for over 50 years. Like you I hide my weight well and don't appear to be obese. As I have gotten older I have developed weight related complications requiring medications; GERD, high blood pressure and recently type II diabetes.
As I said we'll see how this works out. I'm tired of being a fat guy and want to see what it's like to have a normal weight my remaining 25-30 years. I enjoy bicycling. I told my surgeon try riding carrying an 80 lb. bag of cement.

My surgeon suggested "I'm working on improving my overall health" and the surgery is a part of that.

I'm now scheduled for September 19th. I could have gone earlier but wanted to wait till after the summer and I have a few business trips in August. I attended the 3 nutrition classes and I believe I was the oldest in the class. I've been yo-yo dieting since 1971 - the original Atkins diet. I'm just tired of being fat and would like experience a normal body weight my last 20-30 years.

I am an accountant. I know people in my profession all over. I've met them in training and conferences. I know know who the really good ones are. They are usually presenters in the trainings. I would ask your current surgeon for a referral. Dietician also.

I'm not a doctor but it sounds like Reflux (GERD) I've had it for about 30 years but I take medication. I'm pre-surgery and I've been told my DS surgery will pretty much eliminate it.

@Fred in Pa Hey Fred. I am still pre-op. Congratulations - it seems like small milestone to some but I'd take it with a smile. According to the bariatric surgeon I am morbidly obese. I try to not take that personally. I think it has something to do with the insurance. I'm also having the duodenal switch probably later this summer or September and so I will follow your progress..

I had my first meeting with the psychologist this week. I brought this up. She had a good suggestion which I like - "'I'm working hard at improving my health."

    Hey Guru,
I like to read long term success posting. You have done well. I'm still pre-op and starting at about 240#. A realistic goal for me would be around 160#. My motivation is simple: I'm 68 years old and have battled the bulge since I was 16 years old. I was on the original Atkins in 1971. I'd like to experience a somewhat normal weight for the rest of my life. I have enjoyed cycling and look forward to really enjoying it. My other motivation is to get off all of the medication I take for reflux, high blood pressure, and type II diabetes. If this helps my sleep apnea and snoring my wife would be happy. That was a great post. Thank you.

I haven't done a century in quite some time. I have an unstated goal to ride one next year hopefully one year post op. and 80 or so less poundage.

I haven't had surgery yet. If I do I plan to only tell my daughter and my sister. Anyone else who asks - "I went into the transporter and this how I came out."

Hello. I am new here. I'm already finding this forum very informative. I have my first initial consult with the bariatric surgeon next week. I know I have to tell my wife and frankly I do not know how she will react. Knowing her she will say I don't need surgery, I just need to stop snacking particularly at night. I really want her support if I decide to have WLS, probably the original gastric bypass. I have struggled with my weight since I was a teenager. I am now 67. I was on the original Atkins in 1971. I have yo-yo dieted many times. I don't think I am morbidly obese and I hide my weight well but my BMI is 37%. I have enjoyed bicycling and at one point about 20 years ago I was riding a lot 2-3 hour 4-5 times a week. Even then I was not able to lose much and always struggled up every hill.
I take medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol, GERD and type II diabetes. My other main motivation is to get off my medications. I understand this will be a transformative procedure if I choose to have it and will radically need to alter the way I eat. I think I am prepared for that.
Any suggestions on "selling" the idea to my wife would be appreciated. I know I would enjoy bicycling much more and probably ride more. I do still work some, about 20 hours a week. I work at home. Thank you.
