    Advice!!

I'm not a doctor but it sounds like Reflux (GERD) I've had it for about 30 years but I take medication. I'm pre-surgery and I've been told my DS surgery will pretty much eliminate it.

Surgery Shaming Should Be A Thing…

I had my first meeting with the psychologist this week. I brought this up. She had a good suggestion which I like - "'I'm working hard at improving my health."

No longer “OBESE”, small goal reached

@Fred in Pa Hey Fred. I am still pre-op. Congratulations - it seems like small milestone to some but I'd take it with a smile. According to the bariatric surgeon I am morbidly obese. I try to not take that personally. I think it has something to do with the insurance. I'm also having the duodenal switch probably later this summer or September and so I will follow your progress..

    Hello again

I haven't done a century in quite some time. I have an unstated goal to ride one next year hopefully one year post op. and 80 or so less poundage.

    Hello again

I watched Paris-Roubaix yesterday. Wow what a hard ride that is. Are you a professional rider?

    Hello again

Hello Alsbus, I hope it's OK I'll be following you. At one point in my life I was heavily into cycling, not on a racing level but I usually completed at least one century a year and racked up thousands of miles. I have heard of the Tour of Flanders. I still ride a little but it's so difficult schlepping the extra 80 pounds. I'm pre surgery but appreciate long term successes. You've lost 125 pounds! How did it feel to ride without all of the excess baggage?
  7. Hey Guru, I like to read long term success posting. You have done well. I'm still pre-op and starting at about 240#. A realistic goal for me would be around 160#. My motivation is simple: I'm 68 years old and have battled the bulge since I was 16 years old. I was on the original Atkins in 1971. I'd like to experience a somewhat normal weight for the rest of my life. I have enjoyed cycling and look forward to really enjoying it. My other motivation is to get off all of the medication I take for reflux, high blood pressure, and type II diabetes. If this helps my sleep apnea and snoring my wife would be happy. That was a great post. Thank you.

How did you do on your pre-op diet?

@Spinoza. Do you realize you are now about half the weight from when you started! You must be doing something right and I envy you. I'm a guy and don't ever wish to weigh what you weigh. 160-170# and I'd be thrilled. I won't be having my surgery until later this year - probably duodenal switch. Absolutely fantastic for you. I know it was not "easy" in any way.

    SIPS Surgery

I've only had my initial visit with the surgeon but I believe this is the surgery he is recommending due to my Type II diabetes and GERD.

    Skeptical spouse

Hello. I am new here. I'm already finding this forum very informative. I have my first initial consult with the bariatric surgeon next week. I know I have to tell my wife and frankly I do not know how she will react. Knowing her she will say I don't need surgery, I just need to stop snacking particularly at night. I really want her support if I decide to have WLS, probably the original gastric bypass. I have struggled with my weight since I was a teenager. I am now 67. I was on the original Atkins in 1971. I have yo-yo dieted many times. I don't think I am morbidly obese and I hide my weight well but my BMI is 37%. I have enjoyed bicycling and at one point about 20 years ago I was riding a lot 2-3 hour 4-5 times a week. Even then I was not able to lose much and always struggled up every hill. I take medication for high blood pressure, cholesterol, GERD and type II diabetes. My other main motivation is to get off my medications. I understand this will be a transformative procedure if I choose to have it and will radically need to alter the way I eat. I think I am prepared for that. Any suggestions on "selling" the idea to my wife would be appreciated. I know I would enjoy bicycling much more and probably ride more. I do still work some, about 20 hours a week. I work at home. Thank you.

Thank you Kris. I think the OL is warming up to the idea especially when I mentioned it can help with snoring and sleep apnea. The surgeon recommends a duodenal switch surgery because it should eliminate the type II diabetes and GERD. Of course I've been researching that like crazy. I'm definitely interested on how things progress for you.

Surgery Shaming Should Be A Thing…

You look fantastic! Most folks just don't understand the life long struggle. I haven't had surgery yet. If I do I plan to only tell my daughter and my sister. Anyone else who asks - "I went into the transporter and this how I came out."

@jeannjiebug Thank you. Like you my wife doesn't think I'm that big. I hide my weight well. I think we are similar. I am 5' 71/2" and at 240 lbs. What I wouldn't give to be under 180#. Good for you. I can't remember the last time I was below 200. First consultation with the surgeon is next Monday 2/20. I'm pretty sure it's for me.
