  1. Congrats! Welcome to the post-op club! I will be 2 years post-op next month. I can't believe how fast the time has flown! I am now at 132 pounds and feeling the best I have in years. To be honest, I have not had many issues so far, the most difficult one being my hemoglobin and ferritin levels were down to 8 and 5 respectively back in February. So my nutritionist said I needed to start iron (nature's way ultimate iron) that and along with iron infusions for 5 weeks brought me up to hemoglobin 13 and ferritin 22. To be fair, I've been anemic most of my life, but a gastric bypass makes iron harder to absorb as it is. I have a membership to the YMCA. I dance and I love Zumba and Pilates. I've also started Vinyasa Yoga. My biggest chunk of weight came off last March after a 3-week stall. I don't have dumping syndrome as much. I like to stay active and now that I have way more energy it is doable. It's been a year since I'm off of CPAP. Prediabetes gone, A1C at 5.5. Inflammation is nonexistent in my lab draws. I love buying smaller clothes and I love this new me. Maintenance has been fairly easy, I keep in mind that I never want to be obese again.

    Always feeling cold

Same.. I am 14 months out. And being cold all the time is not fun. I'm still trying to figure out how to work around this. I was told that my insulation is gone with all my fat stores gone. But that doesn't help when it is bitterly cold out... lol It's spring now, but the weather in NYC is iffy. So if it's about 80 degrees like it was last Monday then I can manage. Winter was miserable and so far Spring has been meh. I would like to know what can you do. I am stumped drinking hot drinks and layers don't help as much.
  3. I was told about the 30:30 Rule by my team. For all of the reasons stated above. It can cause fullness and washing the food out of the pouch. I am 14 months out, and I will say this is one of the cons of RYGB. I don't like it but I get it. But it is a lifestyle change for life. In February, I had a bottle of water almost 30 minutes after lunch. What happened next was dumping where I didn't eat for the rest of the day. I was still a little shaky the next morning. Luckily for me, I was going to see my primary doc that morning. All in all, it turned out fine. So now I wait at least 45 minutes to an hour before drinking again. It may not be that way for you. But is the risk worth it? Especially, the chance of stretching your pouch? Where you may have to get it revised.

    Struggling to stop losing

Yeah.. this is exactly what I am going through. I'm 14 months post-op. Down to 136 pds. My goal was 150 but I have lost since my anniversary appt back in January. I am very active. Plus I am going to physical therapy which has me doing lots of exercises. My primary doctor has said I should be stabilized by now. But the surgical staff says that this is what my body feels it needs. I am going with that. I was worried that I was still losing. I am listening to my body now and it knows what's best. By the way, you look stunning!! Keep up the good work. And dismiss all the naysayers. I get that a lot from the same people who basically said I was too fat. Now they're saying I'm too skinny... You can't win with these folks. But you're living your life for you. And making this kind of change is a big deal. It is something to be proud of. Let those negative nancy's stay mad. All the best to you!

    50 and over crowd?

I had my RNY procedure last January at 52. So far so good. 2 days in the hospital, I managed my pain at home with Tylenol instead of the hydrocodone I was given. No complications, I did have a bout of dumping when eating peanut butter for the first time post-surgery. I can tolerate it now. I lost a total of 85 pounds. I had a 3-week stall last March. I am off CPAP. My A1C is at 5.5 and I am feeling great. I love my new body. I am working on minimizing the scars with silicone scar and tretinoin via the advice of my dermatologist. My asthma is way under control so need for my maintenance inhaler. I feel that this was a reset in my life in many ways. I do Zumba, walk, and use dumbells to stay in shape. I make sure to stay hydrated per my surgeon's instructions. I follow my surgical team's advice to the letter. I'm just feeling blessed. Best of luck in your journey.

    Bowel movements

That was the worst when I had my surgery last year. I was advised to take milk of magnesia or Dulcolax by the team to get things moving. As well as to flush out any residual anesthesia. So after 1 week, I tried the Dulcolax and it was easy on the tummy while taking care of the constipation. Which is common after this procedure.

    January surgery buddies?

Good luck to you both! I had my gastric bypass last year on January 30th. So while I am soon to be 1yr on this new journey, I would be happy to be a surgery buddy if you needed me. It is indeed exciting. For me, it felt like a reset for my life.

    SO cold

This is something I am struggling with... I am wearing layers of clothes in my own home and outside because I am freezing all the time. I also have to use a heating pad to stay warm. I would love some advice on how to deal with this myself.

    Dating

I agree.. you definitely get to be more picky about who you share your energy with. I've shared that I had WLS with one man I was going to give a chance to. But then he said you don't look like you were big, then he wanted to go on an eating binge date because he says he's a "foodie" and the last straw was him saying he wanted to go out for drinks. I already told him I never drank before my bypass. Definitely not about to start now... He told me sleep apnea came from getting up during the night to drink water. So to me, these things were deal breakers because I already told him what it was. So nope... no thanks. I passed and told myself that I shouldn't have to tell grown people how to act. Google is free..it takes a minute to search bariatric surgeries and sleep apnea. We deserve to be respected regardless of size. Long story short, I'm getting lots of attention now. But they need to bring the right energy and mentality. You have the right to be picky.

    Getting your hair professionally colored?

I've been coloring mine with semi-permanent prior to the surgery and I've been maintaining that since my surgery back in January. No problems so far... not too much hair shedding. I'll take it because I had no clue as to what to expect when the hair loss was discussed back in May with my surgeon.

    CPAP users

I am 7 months post op and I'm still using my cpap. I have to do another Sleep Study in October before my pulmonologist makes that call. I am already down 70 pounds. But I will wait and see what the doc says.
