    Type 1 Diabetes and Lapband

Hi all- My surgery was finally done on Dec 4th- and received my first fill today. However, after a week of great blood sugars, I am struggling again even after losing 15 pounds. Back on insulin....Novolog. I hate it and I am really compliant with the eating plan. Has anyone had good luck with lapband and diabetes???

    Hello -- I'm new!

Great results, Cindy! I was banded on Dec 4th, so I am still in the healing stage. Feeling great, but I can tell I am not very restricted. I am eating exactly what the doctor says and have lost about 16 pounds. I am looking forward to my first "fill" in January. I also need to start doing some serious exercise. Are you exercising? Good luck!! Keep in touch! P.S. I'm in Raleigh!

    What is the deal?

I agree with you all about the scales but it is so tempting!! I was banded on Dec 4th, have lost 17 pounds, and am scared to start to eat too much more. I started walking today to offset some of the additional calories.

    Hello from North Carolina

Robert, Congratulations!! I am very impressed!! What is your secret?? Walking 6 miles has to be a huge help. Were you walking this much before surgery?:rolleyes2::thumbup:

    Hello from North Carolina

I'm going to Dr. Moran also- being banded on Dec 4th. Are you going to the support group?

    Hello from North Carolina

Hello to all those wonderful people from North Carolina!! I am going to be banded on Dec 4th by Dr. Moran in Raleigh, NC. I am VERY excited as I was initially denied by insurance, went through an appeal, and I'm finally here!! So to those of you who are on the other side and have lost weight, what do you think is the biggest reason for your success? Compliance to the eating plan? Exercise? Support group? Commitment to losing? It seems that there are a lot who have lost a lot of weight, over 10 pounds a month, and others who struggle. Any advice??
  10. Obesity Law and Advocacy Center - has anyone heard of them? I am appealing through them (information given to me by my doctor's office) No cost to me or practice. Any information would be appreciated if anyone knows about them. Thanks.

    Denied, and Looking for Support

I know how you feel. I was denied because my nutritionist did not give enough follow-up notes. Unbelievable. However, I am appealing through The Obesity Law & Advocacy Center- they due Lap Band Appeals and it is no cost to you or the doctor's office. Their phone number is 619-656-5251 (California). My doctor faxed all my records to them last week. Please try and appeal. I don't know how long it takes, but I, too, am so devestated that I have to do something. As my doctor's office said, it seems the insurance companies are in the process of denying. Let me know.

Congratulations!! That was fast weight loss!! I was supposed to have the surgery on Oct 2 with Dr Moran, but my insurance (BCBS) denied me at the last minute due to the nutritionist report not having enough follow-up care. I was so upset. I am appealing though- so wish me luck.

    Any October Bandsters!??!?!

Cheryl, I have coronary heart disease (3 stents) and my cardiologist is VERY happy I am doing the lap band. (not so excited about the gastric bypass for me) So don't worry about the tests- the further they check the more knowledge you (and they) will have. My surgery is Oct 2nd and I am vey excited!! My doctor requires full liquid 48 hours before surgery. Every doctor appears to be different, and it probably depends on the patient, too. Good luck!!! Bev

    Any October Bandsters!??!?!

Yes, I have already done all the tests, just waiting now. I see the doctor on Sept 22nd- then just wait until Oct 2nd I guess. I used to take Actos but I needed something stronger I guess. I was taking Medformin for a long time also. Now I am taking Lantos (injection) twice a day plus Novalog (another injection) before every meal to cover the carbs. I still do not have good control. My endricrinolgist is the one who suggested the surgery. My hope is to get off diabetic meds, also. I am walking now, too- trying to do 5 miles a week. I don't know how to handle the meds after the surgery.....the doctor just says that I'll have to take lots of blood sugars and see what happens. Very vague. I know that the surgery will not "cure" diabetes like the gastric bypass seems to, but it's got to help!!!! Let's keep in touch. Bev
