How are the banded Notorious Novembers???
jmegirl replied to mljalways's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What a great idea! I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow and make sure it's OK. Sounds delicious! :rolleyes2: -
I've done really really well since having surgery on Weds Nov 5th. But Thurs night I got nauseous after sipping too much apple juice after my pain meds and ended up throwing up. Other than that incident - I'm fabulous! I still am not feeling hungry, however my doctor says that by Day 3 I should be incorporating protein drinks as well as "Full Liquids" which include grits, oatmeal, ff pudding, sf jello, V8 juice, etc. But I'm scared to eat! I'm scared to drink anything more than apple juice, crystal light, and frozen popsicles! I know that I should be able to handle these "Full Liquids" with no problems, right? I guess I'm just worried I won't notice that I'm full (since I don't even really feel hungry) and that I'll end up throwing up again. That was not a pleasant experience two nights ago and I don't want a repeat of it! Any words of encouragement for me? I must must must start getting calories and protein in my body today, but I'm scared of hurting myself.

Is there a correlation?
jmegirl replied to travelinsnorkel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The restriction you have in the first two weeks is almost directly related to the swelling you experience post-op. Most doctors place the band empty, as in without fill, because they know that you will be swollen for a few weeks and that will provide the restriction you need. Hope this helps! :rolleyes2: -
You would know if you'd slipped. This soon after surgery, you'd probably be in an immense amount of pain by now if you'd torn stitches. I was also banded on Nov 5th and the next night I took my liquid pain meds too fast, followed by too many sips of Gatorade and I ended up heaving and throwing up for a minute or two. But my doctor assured me I couldn't have torn the stitches or caused slippage, because believe it or not, those suckers are in there pretty tight. You're going to be sore, that's a given. But I think chances are pretty slim that you've already caused slippage. Regardless, your doctor will be able to tell at your first appointment.

Day 4 and scared to eat - advice?
jmegirl replied to jmegirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
AGH!! :cool2: Don't throw up on purpose, are you crazy!?!?! You can tear your stitches and cause band slippage!!!! :rolleyes2: -
She's most likely referring to Tostitos Scoops which are just tortilla chips in the form of a little bowl so you can scoop the dip better. They make a baked version.

I use DVR (same thing as TiVo) because my husband and I refuse to watch that show unless we can fast forward through the commercials and the boring/meaningless chit-chat during the weigh-ins. You know, doing it that way, a 2hr show becomes 35mins! :rolleyes2:

I Got My Surgery Date...Where Are The November Bandsters?
jmegirl replied to Cappy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh yes! I did them the night before surgery. They're horrendous! I hope I have lots of success because that's the ONLY way I'm letting those bad boys out of the camera!!!! :rolleyes2: -
I agree completely! But I love the show anyways. I was sad they didn't have one this week, simply because of the election. :rolleyes2:

Hey Deb! It was great to meet you, even though I wasn't feeling good that night. :rolleyes2: Did you get everything situated with your fill??? -
GREAT! Because I plan on being one of LBT's Super Success Stories! I wouldn't have even found a doctor if it hadn't been for this site. :rolleyes2: Also, love the new look.

How are the banded Notorious Novembers???
jmegirl replied to mljalways's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yup, still feeling fabulous! Though a bit stuffed, haha. My stomach is making all sorts of noises, but that's just because it's been so long since I've had anything of substance so my stomach is sort of freaking out over it, but no pain whatsoever. I'm so pleased I got over my fear and ate the grits, they were some kinda yummy! :rolleyes2: -

Well I just finished my cheddar grits! I made them with 3/4 cup of Water (package called for 1/2 cup) and I let them cool about 15mins. It took me about 15mins to finish them I think. I feel full, but I'm not feeling sick or nauseous at all. They were sooooo good too! It's been too long since I had something of substance, haha. -
newly banded - not losing
jmegirl replied to shafe001's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actually yes, that makes more sense. Not getting enough calories would hinder weightloss. I should probably start trying to get more calories in myself! I am just so afraid to eat anything of substance since being banded. :rolleyes2: -

I'm just guessing here, but maybe the shakes you're drinking and the soups you're eating are high in calories? I've been drinking mostly crystal light and low sugar apple juice, and eating sugar free pudding and sugar free popsicles, and I've lost 6.6lbs since in 5 days, lol. I'm staying away from protein shakes for now, they fill me up to the point of nausea and I can't drink much at a time. So I drink maybe one protein shake a day. -
aaaah veggies. i'm only day 5 post-op and i can't wait until i can finally have steamed broccoli with cheese sauce again :rolleyes2:

How are the banded Notorious Novembers???
jmegirl replied to mljalways's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Surgery was Nov 5th. I'm pleased to say my pain has been minimal and very tolerable with the Hydrocodone prescribed for me. I pretty much stopped taking the pain meds on Saturday (Day 4). I waited until Day 4 to have anything beyond crystal light and popsicles because I'm scared to death of eating anything with substance. I was approved for Full Liquids beginning Day 3 but I'm just scared! So I finally let myself have an individual cup of sf pudding yesterday, and that stayed down well. So I had another pudding for Breakfast this morning. Now I'd like some watered down grits, but I'm still scared to eat. Any advice? Anyone else have grits or oatmeal so soon after surgery??? -

My doctor says I can have grits and oatmeal during my Full Liquids phase, which is Day 3-14 - which is now. I have done sugar free pudding with no problem, so I really wanna try some watered down grits. But I'm scared. :rolleyes2: Is anyone else scared to death to eat something of substance in these first days after surgery? I'm on Day 5 and really doing quite well, although I've lost 6.6lbs since the day before surgery. Should I let myself eat grits?? -
Unfortunately you can't just get in extra protein the next day and have it balance out. Your body has no way to store protein (like it stores carbs and fat), and it can only process about 20-25g protein at a time. So it's really important to split your protein into 3 "meals" a day (so to speak) and have each meal consist of about 20-25g each. I know what you mean though about it being hard to get in all your protein. Granted I'm only 5 days post-op, but I opened an Atkins shake last night around 7p. After 4oz I couldn't drink anymore. Around 10p I tried again, still getting maybe 4oz down before having to stop. I've still got part of that can left in the fridge, who knows when I'll be able to drink it.

Burping is also a bad thing. Air bubbles in your stomach expand and pop when you burb them up, which causes your little pouch to expand briefly. When you're only a few days out from surgery, not only can it be painful, but it could potentially be harmful to your sutures. At least, that's what my doctor said.

Day 4 and scared to eat - advice?
jmegirl replied to jmegirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor didn't tell me how much to drink at a time, so I can't help you there. But I have caught myself gulping once or twice instead of sipping, and I was banded on 11/5 as well. I freak out for about two seconds after the gulp, until I realize there's nothing to worry about, and then I stop. I am still trying to sip everything though, because gulping is a thing of the past. I also woke up this morning feeling great, although a bit tight in my chest making it hard to laugh and breathe deeply. I forced myself to drink about 16oz of Crystal Light, which took roughly an hour I'd say. Then I allowed myself a small pudding cup, even though I wasn't even hungry. I've not been hungry at all yet, and it's Day 4! That in itself is a miracle!! -
Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum
jmegirl replied to Shesha's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
You know it's weird, but I think you're right. I think it is the antibiotics doing it to my tummy and not the hydrocodone pain meds. Because I went about 9hrs without pain meds this morning, yet still had the upset tummy and loose stools. Through it all though, I've continued taking that pink bubble gum flavored antibiotic - so that might be the culprit. Geesh, I'll be happy when this is all over! -
i was wondering this! i was also banded on 11/5 and i continue to feel like i have to burp. it's random if i am able to burp, but there's this almost constant stuffiness in my chest and throat like i really need to burp - it just hurts if i try to. no trouble getting gas out the other end though
