Raleigh or Durham, NC recommendations?
jessicakolman replied to JustinsMama's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I recently have looked for a surgeon to do my surgery. I work at REX and I've heard good things from the nurses. From what I hear Dr. Moran is not very personable. Dr. Enochs is much more then Dr. Moran. The OR manager I work with is going to do some investigating and find out more information. Previously, I was looking into Dr. Kenneth Mitchell Jr. in Pinehurst. However I learned that his mortality rate is 4% and that kind of freaks me out. I plan on attending the seminar next month. Anyone who has any thoughts specifially on Dr. Enochs, let me know! -

Ok....regarding Dr. Kenneth Mitchell Jr. ----- I just found out his mortality rate is 4% from a nurse I work with! I'm not doing that.. I think I may choose Dr. Joseph Moran. -

Time Off Work
jessicakolman replied to BubblyBandit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow. I actually was going to ask the same thing. :cool2:I'm starting a new job on Monday and my health insurance won't kick in until October 1st. I really don't want it to look bad having all those appointments while starting a new job. :tongue_smilie: I get off work on Friday's at 1pm so I'll have to make those appointments after 1pm on Fridays. However I tried to set up an appointment with my primary doctor a couple days ago, and they told me that my doctor left on Friday's at 1pm. So i'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do . I may have to tell my work that I have a scheduled doctor 's appointment, which i do.. I hope this works out. :tt1: -
hey all I'm looking into getting the band in the next 8 months.. I'm from Raleigh, NC. I'm still looking for a good surgeon. I'm looking into getting the RealizeBand at Pinehurst,NC by Dr. Kenneth Mitchell. But I'm unsure if that's the surgeon I would want to choose.

So for basically my whole life I've struggled with my image even when I wasn't fat. When I was not fat I was ugly, when I was not ugly I just was known as the girl with the big forehead. I don't want to be any of that anymore. I just want be me. I've been making an effort to lose weight the past few years in many ways. I spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on a gym membership, and not to mention a personal trainer. I was going to the gym at least 6 days a week for 45min - 1hour each time. I simply didn't see any results. Just recently I've decided to do this surgery based on the fact that this is my last hope and I'm truely desperate. I'm willing to deal with the pros and cons of this. I signed up for a seminar on September 8th here in Raleigh, NC. I've decided to get the "REALIZEBand" and I'm going to Pinehurst,NC by Dr. Kenneth Mitchell. As much as I'm excited, I'm starting a new job this Monday and my health insurance won't kick in until October 1st. I will be un-inusured for the whole month of September. I don't know if it pointless to go to the seminar even though I won't have the insurance information. But at least I"ll get important information. At this moment i'm going from working at a hospital to a doctor's office, so I hope the insurance is the same over there, cause I don't want to feel like I got screwed. I'll keep you posted on what I find out about the seminar and inform you when I will get the ball rolling on this. :frown: Wish me luck

Hey!! I'm planning on getting the band in the next 8 months or so.. I'm "somewhat" of a vegetarian. I only eat chicken that is boneless and skinless. Other then that I don't eat any other meat including any fish. I'm a very very picky eater. I plan on making sure I do get my Protein in post lap band surgery though.. good luck:rolleyes::biggrin:

Would you guys recommend trying to do all liquid diet LONG before surgery? Ideas?
jessicakolman posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So as many of you already know I'm looking into getting the lap band surgery early next year. I've been researching constantly. They say you can never research too much. hehe.. Anywho.. I was just wondering....... Would you guys recommend me trying to do a liquid/mushy liquid diet for a week or two? I just want to see what it's like and test the waters. I know that post surgery my stomach is obviously going to be a lot smaller so I won't have the hunger pains, but I know that before surgery most docs have you have a liquid diet like 10 days prior to surgery. If you guys DO recommend me doing this, what do you suggest I do as far as what types of liquids and whatnot? I mean as far as Protein shakes what do you suggest?? I don't know much or anything at all about Protein shakes. i would want something easy on the go that i can have at work. any suggestions? Any other suggestions for other liquid/mushy liquid foods??? If you have any links to sites that would also be appreciated..:whatchutalkingabout Any just another quick question.. say lose a bunch of weight with this liquid diet?? Would it be a bad idea before even doing the whole process of having a consult with a surgeon and all. Would i jeopordize my qualifacations for the surgery??? My BMI is 41.6 -

Thank you!! I won't do the liquid diet until AFTER I meet with the surgeon and he says it's ok. Thank you guys for your input. I really appreciate it. -

What is the difference between REALIZEBand and regular band?

I've heard there is difference between getting the REALIZEBand and the origianl lapband surgery, but I don't know what it is. Is there a difference really at all? the reason why i ask is because I found out about he lapband surgery itself on REALIZEband.com and they advised me to go to a seminar. Now I don't midnd doing that. But the only guy near Raleigh, NC is 70 miles away that specifically does this "realize band" -- would i be wasting money to travel or is this REALIZE band any better?? -
Hey girl. I'm from Raleigh. I'm looking into getting specifically the REALIZEBand at Pinehurst Medical Center. I'm attending a seminar next month but I'm right in the middle of switching jobs, so it might be a little tough to do with new insurance kicking in and taking time off to go to doctors appointments. I hope to get the surgery, cause I really need a change in my life. I can't stand to look at my self in the mirror anymore. I've tried dieting for a while now.. nothing works. That's why i've decided to do this. I hope your surgery goes well! I wish you all the luck. If you ever wanna chat, it would be cool to have a fellow NC to talk to.

QUESTION!! Surgery Criteria for Insurance Coverage
jessicakolman posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey guys. I plan on attending a seminar next month about the lapband sugery. However I’m just confused on what the qualifications criteria is. I received a packet on the eligibility and it said the following: 1. Must be 100 pounds over ideal weight or have a BMI of 40 or above for 4 of the past 5 years (without co-morbidities) or BMI over 35 for 4 of the past 5 years with documented co-morbidities….ie. hypertension, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, etc. 2. Must be able to provide physician documented weight history for the past 5 years. (2004-2007) So here’s my question.. I DO have a BMI of 41.6 which makes me qualify for the surgery. However it says that I have to have a documented weight history. I know for a fact that I was at a BMI of 35.2 in early 2005. So would that hurt my chances of qualifying?:wink2: My other question… “documented co-morbidities” – what exactly does that mean? Does depression count? I went on Realize Band Candidate Quiz - REALIZEBand.com And it told me that I was eligible and “I Do have obesity-related health conditions often used to determine surgery qualifications” So would depression count?? Do I need to be fat longer?? I’m just so confused.. help! -
Hey girl.. I'm from Raleigh, NC. I plan on getting the surgery. I just need to look more into it. I'm going to a seminar with Dr. Kenneth Mitchell, Jr. at Bariatric Center at FirstHealth/Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst, NC.

Hey all. I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jessica Kolman. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina and I'm 24 years old. I'm 5'3'' and 235lbs. I've struggled with weight loss for a short time, but I feel like I can't do anything. I've done gym memberships and went to the gym at least 6 days a week. I didn't lose much weight at all. I lost maybe 10 pounds and never went below that. I'm a vegetarian and so my eating habbits are very selective but I tried to make them healthy. I even tried the Alli pill but that didn't do much even when I stuck to the plan. I feel helpless and I don't know what else to do. I honestly think that this may be the key. I know that with the Realize Band Surgery that there are going to be risks and downsides, but I'm willing to take the chance. I know that I'm going to not only change my eating style dramatically but work out a lot more as well. I went on the REALIZeBand.com website and I do qualify for the surgery. I plan on attending the seminar in September with my husband. I just hope that my health insurance can cover most if not all of it. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield. I'll keep you posted on what I do.

What is the difference between PPO and HMO ??? I'm not very familiar with that. As a matter of fact I'm going to be starting a new job in a week. The health insurance that I have with the job now is going to be pretty much the same, but I will be starting new insurance policy. How does that work? -

what would you consider a "6 month supervised diet"? I'm confused. You mean like weight watchers online or does it have to be at meetings? I jus don't understand that part of it. What would be my first step of doing this? Who do I talk to ?? -
