One year post-op! I am down 85 pounds and have been maintaining the same weight for about 3 months. From 205lbs - 120lbs

    October 2022 surgery support

I feel good most days but if I'm falling too far behind on protein or not drinking enough water I find myself getting terrible migraines that last for days. I'd say I'm not doing my best at eating real "meals". I work 10 hours a day and mostly just pack my lunch bag with high protein snacks. Cheese sticks, turkey jerky, cottage cheese cups, mixed nuts, kind bars (I buy the protein version), dried edamame beans, yogurt smoothies (the brand Two Good makes low sugar yogurt drinks with 10 grams of protein) those are a few favorites in my daily rotation. One of my favorite things to make for dinner is turkey taco meat. I mix a can of red beans into the meat for even more protein and top with 1/4 cup of shredded cheese.

Was sleeved on October 11th with a starting weight of 205. I am at 149 today. I agree about the shakes! Pre-surgery I loved the fairlife protein shakes but they make me so sick to my stomach post-op. I've tried different shakes and they all make me nauseous, so I'm also trying to reach my protein goals strictly through food.

    Before and After Pics

I'm 4 months post op sleeve and have lost 53 pounds so far. Started at 205 and am currently 152. I'm only 5'0 tall so I still have around 30 pounds to go.
  5. Before having VSG I loved baking for the holidays. From cookies to artisan breads to homemade jams and bundt cakes. I don't want to bake now because it's just my husband and myself and I can't really enjoy eating what I make (I realize that sounds selfish) but it feels like it would just be a waste. I miss it though and I have ZERO Christmas spirit this year. Do you still bake treats for Christmas? Tell me about it and let me live vicariously through you! 😅🎄
  6. Oh gosh, I'm sorry to hear that, sounds terrifying. I'm almost 11 weeks post op and got a second round of lab test results back this morning confirming I have hypoglycemia. My primary said my sugar was at 51. But I need to talk with my surgeons office because my primary suggested to "drink a coca cola" when my sugar is low! And I gasped like - "Really? I literally cannot drink a coke with my stomach!" 😬 Not the medical advice I needed.
  7. My program says to start taking vitamins on day 5 post-op (today for me!) But I'm feeling a little nervous. I have the Bariatric Advantage strawberry watermelon chewy bites and I'm worried I'll end up nauseous after taking one. I'm feeling pretty good today and don't want to anger the new stomach 😂 I understand everyone has a different plan and timeline but I'm curious when you were allowed to take vitamins? And how did your stomach handle them starting off?
  8. I'm 5 weeks post-op and need to actively practice slowing down my bites. Sometimes I forget I have a sleeve- I'll take too many "quick" bites and it makes my stomach feel like I swallowed a brick. I've been getting way too full way too fast because of it.

    Thanksgiving 🦃

I'll be 6.5 weeks post-op for Thanksgiving. My sleeve is still fresh and very restrictive so I don't anticipate getting down much. My goal is to start with turkey and have maybe a bite of my favorite sides. I'll be bringing mini low carb/low sugar cheesecakes for dessert.

    Nausea?

I am 3 weeks post op today and haven't experienced any real nausea the whole time. But yesterday and today I am having the WORST nausea all day. I wake up and it's instant. I had to leave work early because it's been so bad today. I took 2 Zofran and it worked for less than an hour before it came back. The worst part is my new stomach isn't capable of throwing up - just dry heaving spit. I have a doctor appointment tomorrow to check it out. My question is has anyone developed nausea out of the blue? It's been hard to stay on top of eating and drinking when my stomach is flip-flopping all day 🤢

    Nausea?

I called the office and am waiting for the nurse practitioner to call back, hopefully she can send something stronger to the pharmacy because I'm really having a hard time Update: she said to take the Zofran more frequently and if I don't feel better tomorrow we can try an IV fluid treatment in office 😕

    Dumping?

I'm 14 days post op and believe I am in the middle of my first dumping episode 😣 I drank my morning protein shake too fast and 15 minutes later my heart started racing, I'm dizzy, I felt like I needed to throw up, and my whole body got hot. I'm sitting on the bathroom floor right now waiting to throw up but nothing is happening. How long does this usually last? Lesson learned!

    Dumping?

I'm completely fine now, like it never happened! Totally my own fault. It came on fast- like 10 minutes after I finished drinking. I've been handling liquids really well and wasn't even thinking this morning when I drank the shake SO fast 🙊 It was a lesson for me to slow down and be more mindful of my new stomach.

    Dumping?

It lasted for about an hour. I took zofran for the first time (since hospital) and curled up in fetal position until it kicked in. I wasn't able to vomit despite being so nauseous, just lots of spit. I was feeling incredible this morning. Just had my 2 week post-op appointment and my Dr. was saying how great It is that I'm hitting my goals and really pumped me up and made me feel proud...and then I went and chugged my shake like I had no dang sense! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Definitely humbled me to slow down because I never want to experience that feeling again.

    Dumping?

Between the milk and the protein powder it was 7 grams of sugar
  16. I'm now 10 days post op and thought I'd check in. I started at 205, weighed 199 the day of surgery, and am 183 today.

Congratulations! I'm so excited for pureed stage (4 more days for me) I'm really tired of all the sweet shakes and yogurts. Ready for cottage cheese and hummus and refried beans 🤤

Happy to hear everything went well! 🫂 Oxy and Zofran were my best friends for the first 3 days. I'm only 8 days post-op but the difference in how I feel now (mentally and physically) vs. 3 days ago - like a new person. It will 100% get better! Wishing you a smooth recovery with lots of rest 🤍

    Stomach spasms??

I'm day 8 post-op and here to report it does get better. I haven't had a spasm in two days! It's made it SO much easier to get down liquids without that annoying tightening.
  20. I am 3 days post-op sleeve (also had my gallbladder removed and a hiatal hernia repaired) and I am getting random stomach spasms that last like 5 seconds. They make my whole abdomen tense and take my breath away for a few seconds. I am going to call the surgeon today but I'm curious if this is a typical pain after vsg? The spasms so far are the worst part of my healing experience.

    what surprised you?

Another thing that has surprised me 5 days post-op is that a few minutes after I drink any of my favorite Fairlife Protein Shakes I get terrible diarrhea. I was expecting to be constipated for days after surgery and even stocked up on Miralax in preparation. But I'm having the complete opposite problem. I'm trying to drink more water to avoid dehydration from the constant bathroom trips 😵 I am going to have to try different protein brands to find one that doesn't cause such destruction LOL
  22. raspberrylime

    what surprised you?

I wasn't prepared for my urine to be dark green post-op! I hadn't read a single thing on any forum about this. Apparently the surgeon did something called a methylene blue test to check for pouch leaks during surgery. 4 days post op and still peeing Hulk green 🥴

    October 2022 surgery support

Yes, absolutely! Even 4 days post op I still have moments where I'm like "huh, I really did this!?" It's starting to feel more real as the days go by. Best of luck to you and I wish you a smooth sailing recovery

Day 4 post op vsg over here. It hurts less today to walk and move around. I slept in my bed for the first night instead of the recliner. I started my morning off with half a fairlife protein shake (this next part is probably TMI, sorry 💩) and about 10 minutes later was struck with the most intense diarrhea of my life! I'm talking doubled over, whole body sweating, crying in stomach cramp agony. It was my first post-op bowel movement, and may have been worse because I also had my gallbladder removed. It was followed by an emotional breakdown where I just sat and cried and questioned every choice that led me to this moment. I don't regret having WLS, but I am having a difficult time reminding myself that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. A little tip I found (if your new stomach can tolerate cold liquid) is to freeze gatorade zero into popsicles! I ordered 4oz popsicle molds on Amazon and find it much easier to suck on a popsicle than sip 4oz right now.

    Stomach spasms??

Oh yeah totally relate to the feeling of a burp that needs to happen! It's like I can feel the burp coming up but instead of having a belch my throat kind of just...gurgles? Really happy whenever I can let out a real burp
