I started this journey in 2008. I was rejected by Cigna (the WORST insurance company in the world, IMO) three times. Additionally, they denied my appeal three times. Six times begging for my life just to be told it was “vanity” weight due to no co-morbidities. How is 300lbs “vanity” weight?! It was a slap in the face. SO…I stopped trying. I gave up. Yes, I re-joined Weight Watchers in hopes that maybe that would help unlike the four times before it had failed me….this time it would be different. I lost 80 lbs. Then in three months I gained back 40. I couldn’t believe it and decided to stop fighting my body. I felt no one would help me. I thought I would be one of those mattress dwellers who occasionally appeared on TLC. I figured I would die early and morbidly obese. The end.
I have noticed a growing number of people around my office rapidly shrinking. I stared to ask around and it turned out eight people in my office had been approved for and had lapband surgery under our new provider Anthem BCBS. So…in one last (I didn’t give it much hope) attempt I made an appointment with Dr. Brown at Colorado Bariatrics. Here we go again….psych eval (I had 3), nutrition class (yup! been to 3 of those, too) and finally, the fateful meeting with the “billing lady”. I sat down, Kleenex in hand knowing I would be rejected again, ready for the tears to start flowing again. I was just telling myself this is the LAST time I will go through this when she said, “You are approved. There is no six month diet requirement, so we can get you scheduled today. We just need a month to get all the paperwork in order. How does September 27th look for you?” Well…the tears started flowing!!! I couldn’t believe what she had said. I had to have her repeat it. Approved? One month? Approved?!? ONE MONTH?!?!
Well….Three years, four months, two days….and now, I am in the 40 day countdown!!
