    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

I'm reading a lot about 2 week liquid diet. I was approved for weight loss surgery 3 years ago and even had a surgery date scheduled and mentally was not prepared. I ended up canceling the surgery, and my doctor at the time did this 2 week liquid diet. My doctor this time around did not require that. I'm very thankful for it. I talked to him about it (a very respected surgeon here) and he just finds it's something really hard to invoke on someone who has already made a hard decision. I had a full breakfast the morning before the surgery and then broth for lunch and dinner and surgery the next day. He said if my liver covered part of my stomach (the liquid diet is to shrink your liver) that he would simply put in a 5th laparoscopic hole and insert a device that is used to keep the liver pushed up. Surprised that the liquid diet is so common prior to surgery....

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Oh man...I slept zero last night in the hospital. I've been up for 36 hours and I'm at the stage where I'm not tired. i'm handling cold liquids, hot liquids, etc. I've read horror stories but feel very fortunate I'm tolerating everything as well as I am. I have no pain. My surgeon didn't even prescribe pain killers for me.

1 day post op. Actual surgery went great, but recovery had some struggles. My oxygen levels during recovery were tanking and then at night my heart rate shot up and they were worried I might have a leak. Surgeon was called and he told the nurses to stop giving me lidocaine and give me two bags of fluids instead of one. Heart rate immediately went to normal. These surgeons know their stuff! I've handled the liquid diet really well. They even took me off the clear liquid diet today and started giving me pudding and popsicles and creamed soup and I've handled it all great. I'm pretty fired up and ready to rock this!
