Post-op tips/necessities
IWant ToDelete MyProfile posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m learning a lot from reading others posts and also learning that sometimes doctors don’t 100% prepare us for our return home I’m thinking it’s because they don’t know first hand what it’s like to recover from WLS? I dunno, whatever the reason it’d be nice to have this post to refer to when I’m post-op (I’m getting roux en y gastric bypass) So, give me all your best tips for recovery and necessities. What did you need and wish you had readily available? Thanks in advance!!! -
I’m just posting this for posterity because I couldn’t find any relevant or recent information on my insurance NYS Fidelis/ Medicaid. It would’ve been nice to have a first hand point of reference. To start, the entire process has been a breeze. From the beginning: - They do not require a referral from your primary care but you will need a letter of support towards the end of your program. Meaning, you WILL need a primary care doctor that can get you in to do a pre-op assessment etc, towards the end of your program (that may just be my doctors requirements though.) - They require 3 bariatric doctor visits, 2 visits with a dietician, 1 visit with a bariatric psychologist. Making it a 3 month process. Availability with your bariatric center will dictate the timeframe depending on if they are backed up or not. But Fidelis ONLY requires those visits spread across 3 months. - Finally once you complete those requirements your doc will submit to Fidelis for approval. I know timeframes may vary but my doctor submitted my paperwork on May 31st. Fidelis received it the same day and replied by 1am on June 1st (less then 24hrs) stating they needed the clinical chart notes and proving I met all my program requirements etc. My doctor submitted the necessary information and I received my approval this morning June 8th, again at 1am. Of course this timeline also depends on how on top of things your bariatric office is. Mine is very proactive but they were a little backed up because of Covid so the process took 5 months instead of 3. But as far as Fidelis goes they are very responsive and quick to reply. I have had a great experience thus far and am looking forward to my surgery July 6th! Any questions feel free to ask now or in the future!

Hi ladies! So here’s my situation, I had RNY surgery July 6th and everything has gone as expected and what was explained to me. Smooth sailing until yesterday and today. I’ve been expecting aunt flow and she’s coming slowly but surely. I woke up yesterday feeling great. I had a protein shake and went for a short walk. Shortly after returning I started to feel so sick. Like what dumping syndrome feels like. All the symptoms to a “T”. I couldn’t understand why and thought that maybe I drank my shake too fast? There was literally no explanation. I laid down and laid low for the rest of the day. My stomach was angry so I just had popsicles, broth, water and 2 bites of plain Greek yogurt at the end of the day because “live and active cultures”. Most of it felt ok going down but not for HOURS after the possible dumping episode. Skip to today, I woke up feeling ok. My stomach mostly just felt a little tender but I decided to try and power through a protein water at least. It took me 3hrs to finish it and now I feel just awful again. Not as bad as yesterday’s episode but generally not well. My first thoughts were maybe it’s the whey or lactose. Yesterday’s shake was a fairlife which has no lactose but I believe does contain whey. Today’s protein water (Protein2o) contained whey isolate. But then I started thinking maybe it’s my PMS symptoms just wreaking havoc on my insides and because I’m still healing maybe it feels more severe? I purchased some vegan protein to try tomorrow. But does anyone have any input? Should I call my doctor? Let me know if I’m missing any information that might help this all make more sense. Ugh just feel terrible and need relief.

Doubling up on Protein
IWant ToDelete MyProfile posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all! I’m 8 days post op RNY and I have a question that I haven’t found the answer to while googling. I’ll call my nutritionist tomorrow and ask but just wondering if it’s possible to add protein powder to my pre-mixed shakes? Or is that too much protein at once? I’m having a hard time drinking as many protein shakes as I need but I just can’t fit them in. Between drinking all the water and waiting 30min before and after the day gets way from me. I have a shake in the morning like 8am and I’m still full by 2-3pm. -

Food weight: before or after?
IWant ToDelete MyProfile posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have a question that I tried to find an answer to and just couldn’t get a clear one. I did email my nutritionist but it’s after hours and won’t here back until tomorrow. So in the meantime I thought I’d inquire here…. I was doing a little meal prep for the next few days and wanted to portion things out to 2ish ounces. I weighed and air fried some tofu…. Tofu is packed in a lot of liquid and even after pressing it there’s still a lot. Obviously the post air fry weight was considerably less, like almost half…. Now, the nutritional value is still the same, protein, carbs, fat etc. So if I weigh it after cooking and log it, it’ll give me the nutritional values for the cooked weight BUT shouldn’t I count the nutritional value of it uncooked? Thoughts? To add: I’m most just wondering about nutritional value here. I want to maximize my protein intake here and I don’t want to cheat myself. -

Thanks for the input. I’m only a few weeks post op. So I’m really looking at my Protein amounts closely. This helps. -
PMS causing issues?
IWant ToDelete MyProfile replied to IWant ToDelete MyProfile's topic in The Gals' Room
I spoke with my doctor that day and he said it just happens and he wanted me to switch to vegan protein. Problem solved!! I became intolerant to whey/milk based proteins. I love my fairlife but we must part ways for some time. I found some AMAZING vegan protein though. So I’m not terribly bummed. Thanks for the input! -

I have isopure unflavored and to be honest and probably an unpopular opinion, it is GROSS. I need to add it to things that mask the flavor. -
I’m just wondering how my fellow foodies have navigated things since surgery and how are things going weeks, months, years out. I went to school for culinary arts and though I no longer work in the food industry I still looooooove cheffing up some gourmet meals for my family. It’s truly my passion. I just need reassurance that I’ll still be able to indulge in my passion even if I am only able to take a bite or two of my filet mignon or scallops. I just love having dinner parties and cooking for my people. If that makes sense.

Ok, thank you! I guess that makes sense. It’s the same with vitamins. I sure wish it was feasible though. Would make reaching my protein goal so much easier! -

I had RNY. I was in the hospital a little over 24hrs. Liquid is going ok. It’s so hard to meet protein goals! I’m feeling better everyday. The first 3 days were the worst for me. -

The challenge has been accepted for sure. I used to work at a spa resort where I had to cook healthy versions of everything so I’m very familiar with cooking healthier cuisine. I just really hope I can still enjoy some grilled filet mignon 🤤 I know it can sit heavy in some peoples pouches. -

My surgery was on July 6th. I’m currently in the recovery process. If anyone has any questions feel free to throw them my way. -
Hi all! I have a question that I just need input on until I’m able to reach out to my nutritionist or surgeon. I think I messed up!!!! I’m on day 5 of my 7day pre-op diet. The first 5 days consists of tons of water and SF electrolytes, 3 protein shakes , 1-2 boiled eggs, cottage cheese or low-fat string cheese, a lean protein meal with non-starchy veg and non- starchy veggies, SF jello, SF popsicles and broth as snacks or to quell hunger pangs. Think Keto and in fact I have reached ketosis (i have that telltale fruity, albeit, rotten apple flavor in my mouth for 2 days and I have test strips that confirm because I once tried to follow the keto diet). The last two days are protein and then clear liquids. So here’s the thing my mind was set on “keto, keto, keto” and I completely flubbed and ate some raspberries this morning!!!! Raspberries are keto approved but….. I don’t know if they are pre-op gastric bypass approved!! I’m tail spinning. I think I totally messed up! Input please! Thank you!!
