I gained 85 lbs in 4 years with undiagnosed hypothyroidism. Doctors kept telling me it was just menopause. When I switched insurance with a new job in late 2016, I had a consult and checkup with my new doctor who listened to all of my symptoms (dry skin, hair loss, depression, exhaustion, out of control weight gain even with dieting and exercise), and she is the only one who ran and actually looked at the test results for my TSH, which was 5.9 at the time. The first week on meds I started to see the difference. I stopped gaining weight. It took about a year to stabilize my TSH and get my medication correct.
That was in October 2017. Since then, I have tried WW, diets, exercise, KETO, you name it. Couldn't lose more than 6 lbs, but would gain it right back. I had been looking into this all during COVID lockdown, and had attempted to go through the bariatric program with Kaiser back in early 2019. Only problem was their metric required me to lose 20 lbs. We had already established that I couldn't do that. So I switched insurance during open enrollment and went to my old doctor in January. She had been one of my previous doctors so had all of my records. During our appointment we talked about my inability to lose weight and she said it looked like my body had a hardline set point, and that sleeve or RNY my be the answer to reset my metabolism.
I met with my surgeon in February 2021 and we started what ended up being an 11 month process to get me to surgery. I am currently 11 weeks post op and have lost 38 lbs! I feel much better. I have more energy. I can walk the dogs without being fatigued afterward. I have fun with my grandkids at the playground. Basically, I've gotten my life back.
I am feeling more comfortable every day, and can't wait to get back to my pre-2013 weight of 190 or less. This surgery has been a life saver for me!
