What about soups? I am in week 5 post-op and STILL resort to soups when I am not "feeling" other foods I'm allowed. A hot soup just seems to go down easier. If you can pack it with protein, even better! Beats a shake (at least for me)

I stalled for two weeks! Zero weight loss during my second AND third weeks post-op. It's normal and common. Weight loss for me resumed when I started pureed foods on week 4.

Hope you are recovering well Mariann! Sending positive vibes your way!

Congrats!

I am in week 4 post-op. Looks like I'm getting anywhere between 400-850 calories per day. Struggling to get my water in this week and, sometimes, my protein if I'm not careful about tracking my progress throughout the day. I've resorted to using a timer every 15 min to cue me to drink and to stop/start 30 min before and after meals.

I didn't feel any restriction at all during the soft/pureed food stages. As of Friday, though, I am on regular food. Boy can I feel the restriction now! I JUST had only my second experience with vomiting after a meal - I think I just ate my little bowl of food too fast and had a bite or two too much. Also, definitely follow the rules about stopping liquids 30 min before or after meals or you will get that over-full feeling!

Probably. I stalled when I switched from clear liquids to full liquids. Someone here shared a video where a bariatric surgeon explains the cause of the early stall. It's nothing that you are doing wrong. Your initial weight loss would have mostly been water loss that eventually catches up. The stall is just the body processing the changes to your diet and your new stomach. Some recommend only weighing once per week or month so that you don't lose hope in the process. Also, if you are doing any exercise and had previously lost muscle tone - you will be gaining muscle that will also move the scale back a little. But, even though I stalled for the entire 2nd & 3rd week post surgery, I could tell my clothes were still getting looser by the day.

Update on my progress. Surgery was May 13. I lost a pound per day the first week, then stalled for 2 weeks. Finally loosing again! Down 26lbs so far, including pre-op diet. Have been working out 5 days per week on elliptical and on regular food now as of Friday. Struggling to get my 60 oz of water in, but started using my timer yesterday to remind me to sip something every 15 minutes except before and after meals. I have only had nausea once and have only vomited once - both times caused by drinking too close to meals. Overall, this has been a much better experience than I anticipated since I am 62 yrs old. Surgeon says I'm doing great! I only took 3 days off work, and then worked from home for 2 weeks (desk job).

For me it has a very chemical after taste that is off-putting, but it's such a good source of protein in a small quantity that I am still using it, but as a smoothy base with a little Fairlife vanilla protein shake and plain greek yogurt. Since today I start soft foods, I am going to add a little banana. MUCH tastier this way!

Excellent. Thanks!

So, did anyone else “stall” on week 2? I know about the 3 week stall, but I stalled when I switched to full liquid - even though I’m still under 500 cal per day. I actually gained a pound after the first day of full liquids. I am now day 13 post surgery and at same weight as day 7! I’m getting 60-70 G protein, struggling a little with water, but managing 50-64g and most days having around 420 - 450 cal/day. I am also doing 30 minutes on elliptical 4-5 days/week since Day 5 post-surgery.

Throat burns post sleeve
sprukop0924 replied to ShoppGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Interesting. During my initial visits with the surgeon when we discussed whether I should have the sleeve or bypass, he asked me if I had Gerd. I did not, but did have occassional heartburn. So, he ordered an endoscopy - the result of which cleared me for the sleeve. I started experiencing "gerd-like" symptoms on the 3rd or 4th day after surgery. I also have an adjustable bed and kept the head raised so that it was less painful getting in and out of bed. Pre-op it was always my habit to take my blood pressure and cholesterol meds at night just before going to bed and I continued this practice after surgery. So, it dawned on me that I should probably take them in the morning instead. But the first night without meds I STILL had reflux. So, the next night I made sure I had finished all of my protein requirements before 9pm and only sipped water until bedtime. MUCH better night last night. I think I read that the stomach is still secreting acids for larger amounts of food than I am consuming at this stage and there will be an adjustment. Hopefully the issue will correct itself as my stomach heals. At least that is my hope. In any case, I have my first follow up with the surgeon on Monday and I will discuss it with him. -
Oh Happy Day! My program has had me on clear liquids for the first week. Today was my first day of FULL liquids and I feel like a new woman! lol Tomato soup has NEVER tasted so good to me! I got SO sick and tired of the syrupy sweet Protein waters. Yuck!! 16.9 oz for 20 g of protein. I just found these on Amazon. 26 g of protein in only 2.5 oz of liquid. Has anyone tried these? I ordered a case to test out - should have by Sunday. Reviews say its sweet and tart - but at least its only 2.5 oz. That will let me get the rest of my water requirement through WATER or something less disgusting.

Oh, I didn't realize soda could stretch the stomach. I just understood that the carbonation would be uncomfortable.

My surgery was on a Friday and I took off through Tuesday and then began working from home yesterday and intend to continue working from home until May 30. After that I have to start going to the office 3 days per week, but that shouldn't be a problem since I will at least be on soft food by then.

I've been steadily losing at least a pound per day since surgery on the 13th. My first follow up with surgeon is on Monday. One of my incisions (the one where the stomach was pulled out) is still a bit swollen, and the entire area around it has started itching unbearably! No redness or sign of infection. Just ITCH.

Oh bummer Merrill! Any idea when they might reschedule?

Surgery midweek-eek and yay-big change at older age

I’m 62 and they gave me the preop nausea patch. My surgery was Friday and i haven’t had any nausea so far -
Sleeved yesterday and doing GREAT! My anesthesiologist gave me a nerve block and also put an anti-nausea patch behind my ear that is supposed to last 3 days! So I’ve had zero nausea or vomiting- so far. Pain has been very tolerable after the first 4-5 hrs from surgery. So far I’ve managed to drink water, apple juice and chicken broth without issue. Not much has pain . Feeling very fortunate and looking forward to going home.

Good luck tomorrow! I'll see you on the other side of this! I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am tomorrow! Getting VERY nervous! Also hoping I've shrunk my liver enough. Scale has hardly moved this week even though I haven't cheated at all! Hoping its just muscle gain since I've been going to the gym all week.
