    Liver Problems

Hey y’all, I am wondering if anyone out there has had liver damage related to the surgery. My liver function tests have been elevated since surgery in February and I was finally referred to GI. My GI doc did some more tests and found that I have liver damage (there’s a blood test that looks for this called the GGT or Gamma Glutamyltransfer Ase). My GGT is 537, normal is under 38. They want to do a liver biopsy next. Any thoughts or advice on how to not freak out about this?

    Liver Problems

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. My LFTs are elevated too. Alkaline Phosphatase is 293 (normal 26-137), AST is 783 (normal 0-37) and ALT is 814 (normal 12-78). They also found IgG deficiency. Hoping I can get some answers soon.

    First dumping

Well tonight I had my first dumping episode. I ate cantaloupe, which I thought was ok but later found out that even fruit sugar can give you dumping. Let me tell you I will avoid at all costs in the future!! Bloating, stomach cramping, nausea, sweats, salivating. It’s the worst!

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Wondering if anyone else feels like they can eat more than others. I can easily eat 3 oz of chicken and 1 c of salad. Wondering if I stretched my pouch out already. My weight has stalled since mid-April and before that stalled from beginning of April to mid-April. I only lost 4 lbs in April.

Thank god someone finally said this!! I can eat about 3 oz of chicken and 1 c of salad in one meal with no problems or feeling of fullness. And the hunger pangs! Omg they’re awful!! I’ve been in a stall since beginning of April. Finally lost 2 lbs this week.

    Not losing weight

I had VSG in February and haven't really lost that much weight. I started at 192 the day of surgery, and am at 172 today. I have been 172 for 3 weeks now and have not seen any change I wonder if I'm not getting enough calories. I only eat about 1000 calories a day. I struggle to get my fluids in as well.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello! I had surgery on 2/22 and had major complications afterwards. I was in the hospital for 13 days out of the last month. I, too, had a hard time getting protein and fluids down and my weight loss has also stalled at 16 lbs. My doctor ordered thrice-weekly fluid and vitamin infusions for me. Perhaps you can ask your doctor about that.

    Pancreatitis?

Has anyone experienced pancreatitis after surgery? My labs are through the roof (my lipase is 807) and I’m not sure if I should go to ED or wait to talk to my doc until Monday. I am in a lot of pain and can hardly eat but don’t want to go to the ED if my doc can do something that doesn’t require a hospital visit. In case you’re wondering, the labs I did Friday came back after the doctor’s office closed Friday evening.
  10. I had VSG on 2/22/22 and have been in the hospital 9 of those 12 days. Right after surgery I had extreme nausea/vomiting (blood), but it passed and I was able to go home on 2/24/22. Once home I started having horrible reflux and gas cramping and had a hard time getting anything down. On Monday, 2/28/22, my doc told me to go to ED for fluids since I couldn’t keep anything down. I had 5 bags of fluids before I started to pee again. Then the pain came. I could not ingest anything without extreme spasms in my stomach. Doc did a CT and showed what they think is a blood clot in my new pouch. Fast forward, I got a PICC line and TPN on Wednesday this week. Now doc is saying I’m all good to go home even though I still have extreme pain when drinking and haven’t had more than 20 oz of fluid on my own since last week. I’m weary to go home just to have to come back again.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

My surgery was 2/22/22 and I had some major complications. I had internal bleeding and lost almost half of my blood volume. Then I had severe pain when eating and had to be admitted for 6 days for a PICC and TPN. Was released last Saturday. Still have intermittent severe pain when eating but am working through it. Doc has set me up with thrice-weekly fluid/vitamin infusions since I am only getting about 20-30 oz of fluids per day. I also can't transition to soft foods yet since I have a blood clot in my new pouch (which is what's causing all the pain) so it's just shakes for a few more days. I haven't regretted my decision to have the surgery yet but just wish I could get back to somewhat normalcy.

    Post-op Diet: First Few Weeks

I was on Optifast for 26 days pre op and had no problems. Actually enjoyed the shakes. Post-op, my doc didn’t supply the shakes so I bought some protein powder. I mix my protein with milk and Greek yogurt for a hearty shake, however I’m only able to get down 3 shakes a day and I am soooo hungry. It’s keeping me up at night. Hoping I can transition to puréed foods on Thursday.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello friend!! My mom did some research and found it might be the Reglan the doc prescribed me. Trying not to take that. Just had dumping syndrome from the vitamins they gave me, at least that’s what I think it was. Anyhoo, thanks for replying! It’s good to know we’re not alone!

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hey y’all! Boy have I had a roller coaster! I had VSG on Tuesday 2/22/22 and it has been a medical roller coaster. I started with a great CBC before surgery and it quickly went downhill. Tuesday night my HR was 122 resting so I had to have a Bolus of saline. That corrected but I was still bleeding internally. I lost more and more blood Wednesday-Thursday and my BP dipped to 74/52 at one point. I felt lightheaded and faint and couldn’t get out of bed. Doc told me the internal bleeding was pretty normal for this procedure. Things turned around on Thursday and my anemia started to correct itself so the doc sent me home. The remaining effects will last weeks the doc says. My only real problem now is I am extremely hungry. I’ve read it could be acid but I’m on Protonix once a day. Anyone has experience with post-op hunger? Anything help it?
