Can you ever drink soda again after surgery
DonnaGS replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgeon says wait 6 months because of the carbonation. I don't drink coffee, so I have a half of a can in the morning of diet coke. I drink it slowly, I've never had a problem. I use a straw, never had an issue. Also drink the occasional cup of tea. However, I'm losing so slow, nobody can see the results yet! I've lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks, stalled out since then. I can't eat any carbs at all. -
Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

Oh dear, thats discouraging! I'm probably doing the same thing. I lost 20 pounds in the first 6 weeks. When I stay on keto or very low carb, I lose. As soon as I have any bread, wheat, tortilla, I stall out and don't lose anything, even though my calorie count is still under 1000 calories in a day. I haven't lost anything in my second month so far because I ate out and had bread of some sort. What can I say? Before surgery I could lose 1/2 a pound a month, I know I have insulin resistance, it is what it is. Hand in there! At least we aren't gaining! -

Glad to hear other people are experiencing the same stall outs and still losing their weight! I stall out every other week. If I eat any Carb its a full week of stalling out and it takes an act of congress to jump back on the band wagon and get going again. Like a lot of people have mentioned, I have osteoarthritis In every joint of my body, plus other issues. So walking, swimming, everything I do has to be in moderation and not everyday. I do weight lifting, but very small weights. It all adds up, it might not be as much as I want, but I realize I'm more active than the average person probably. -
Negative comments from family members

Thinblueline, Thank you for the kind words and support. I've found with these type of people you have to be aggressive, because they just don't get it. Just saying "no thanks" doesn't work. Normally I'm not that way. But when you tell people you can get physically ill from eating a certain amount of wheat and they push bread and pasta on you, while their intentions are good, it is cruel, like you said. It's hard enough to not eat that crap! Good luck on your journey. -

Anyone deal with "food pushers?" I had a dear sweet 85 year old friend who passed away last year. Not a day goes by that I don't miss her. But she and her family were terrible food pushers and they weren't pushing brussel sprouts and broccoli! I used to say with her when I was back in town. She had piles of chips, every kind you can imagine. A pile of boxed cheap desserts! Like donuts, brownies, cookies. She was a great cook and at one time a great baker. But as she got older, that was replaced by cheap store bought desserts. It didn't matter how many times I told her I was watching my carbs and needed to stay away from wheat products. She would invite me over for lunch of pasta, french bread and cookies for dessert. Not a green food in site, not even a salad! She showed her love to people with food. Right now, when I'm around people like that I have a built in excuse, which everyone knows I had surgery and there are certain foods I can't eat for 6 months. I think I will just tell those food pushers that are left in my life that I can't ever eat certain foods again. Maybe that will squash it. -
Hi Mochi, I had the sleeve done on 2/23. I lost 15 pounds the first 3 weeks and have now stalled out. I've added in foods but cant always do food 3x day so still doing protein shakes 1-2meals a day. I know some days I have hunger to deal with.

I've told most my family and friends and most have been supportive, with occasional negative comments such as " my sister is the only one that hasn't gained it back." I'm looking at it as a lack of experience and knowledge on their part and try to educated them. Every situation is of course, different. If someone weighs 300 lbs, like my friend, she lost 150 lbs, but then over next 15 years she gained 50 back. However, she is still down 100 lbs. I consider that a success, it kept her health in a good place. I try to pass that on and look at it from a different point of view. She wasn't trying to look in a bikini, its about health and she succeeded in that. -
4 days post op and I'm so hungry!
DonnaGS replied to RedHookRaven's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 4 weeks out, have lost 15 pounds, now stalled. I know I need to believe in the process and stalls happen. All I can do is stick with the plan and wait it out. I've had hunger off and on since second week. It surprised me, as I thought the first 6-12 months people didn't get hungry. My surgery says its normal, some people experience no hunger, others fight it. I find when I feel this way, I try water first, then Bouillion Cube, sugar free popsicles (but these have carbs, be careful!) If I'm still hungry I have 1/2 shake or 1/4 - 1/2 cup of chicken and vegetables, which does the job. Good luck everyone! -
1 week post op and I feel amazing!!
DonnaGS replied to blackluxury82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats to all on a fast and uneventful surgery. I'm almost 1 week out. Everyday is different. I'm very low energy but trying to stick with keto diet, at least in the beginning because I lose weight so slow normally. I have some health issues which aren't helping the low energy issue. Sometimes I'm surprised I'm hungry. I heard that generally in the first stages you aren't that hungry. The good news is having 4 oz of protein drink gets rid of the hunger. But its a good thing my refridge and pantry are emptied of anything I shouldn't be eating right now! I suspect I'm much older than a lot of people on this board. -

I can imagine, I just had surgery on the 23rd and already dealing with tired of protein shakes. I find if I add sugar free jello, its filling, tastes different and gives you the satisfaction of eating. Also, broth (better than bouillian) excuse the spelling, tastes great and you almost feel like you've had soup. good luck to you! -
Hi everyone, I'm having the sleeve surgery on Feb 23rd. I'm real excited about the new phase of my life and the weight loss journey. One thing that has me concerned is the NO CAFFIENE for 6 months. I don't drink coffee, but normally have a cup of tea and 1 diet soda in the morning, occasionally I'll have one in the afternoon. I've been slowly reducing the amount of caffeine so I don't go into withdrawals, although I've stopped drinking it before without problems. What are people doing without caffeine? Maybe after losing enough weight we will all have enough energy that caffeine won't be needed, but in the meantime, any suggestions? I do take tyrosine sometimes and it does help with energy, but not like a diet soda or a cuppa!

I had surgery (sleeve) on feb 23rd. Today is the first day without major nausea, just a very mild amount. The Premier shakes are very sweet, but thats what I have right now, I have tried Isopure and mixed it with water, it has a nice creamy texture but would taste good in a shake. Having trouble getting all my protein down. The water not so much. Every now and then I get a bit hungry, it lasts a few seconds then dissappears. Sugar jello tastes yucky. Broth is good though and sugar free popsickles are good. Started walking today, feels good to get out. -
I have came to the same conclusion as you! Unless I'm drinking 10 cups of tea, I'm not going to get dehydrated. Its not like I can lose 5 pounds of water weight by having a cuppa. My bariatric Dr Even said a cup of tea here and there isn't going to hurt anything. I normally have one cup of tea in the morning and one can of diet soda. Because of the carbonation, I will have to quit the soda for awhile.

Thanks, that helps!

Any So Cal Kaiser members starting the journey?
DonnaGS replied to Angel_Mom21's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hi Angel mom, I wish the best with your surgery! I'm scheduled for feb 23rd, but I'm not at Kaiser, I have United healthcare and my surgery is at Memorial in Arcadia. I live in Culver City, so its quite the drive! I'm having the sleeve done with Dr Lamar. Good luck to you. -
So I take it caffeine isn't the big bad nasty they make it out to be. I'll stay away from especially the first 3 months and see how it goes.
