    Incision Question

Yep, I would definitely keep a bandaid on it.

    Full Liquids?!

The Wal Mart deli has really good pre-made soups. They are way cheaper than Panera soup, but just as good. I tried tomato bisque and cauliflower parmesan so far. I also made Campbell’s split pea soup and stored it in 1/2 cup servings. Honestly, I don’t care about low carb because I feel like I’m starving most of the time! My sleeve surgery was on April 12th.

Over night stay at hospital. Yay or nay

I HAD to stay overnight and it seems necessary because: #1 They need to make sure your vitals are stable #2 They need to replenish your fluids via IV #3 They need to administer anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory meds throughout the night #4 I had to have a UGI the following morning to make sure there were no leaks in my stomach
  4. My surgeon required me to stop taking everything for the first two weeks. After that, everything has to be chewable for 60 days. I will be taking Flintstones Multivitamin with Iron, Bariatric Advantage chewable calcium citrate, B-12 that dissolves under the tongue and a chewable Biotin. P.S. I took chewable Gas-X after surgery for the gas pains. It was a life saver, so ask your surgeon about taking that.

    A Little Lost

Well, first off, good for you for coming here and asking for help. That’s the biggest step, acknowledging that you fell off track and need to make changes. Maybe switch your diet to two protein shakes each day and a healthy dinner. It would be a great kick start to your weight loss. Also, start tracking and listing everything that you eat on an app. It really makes you accountable. You can do this!

    One-week post-op, eating & diarrhea

Oh my, I am so sorry that you are having such a hard time. This is not good. I had sleeve surgery a week ago and experienced very mild diarrhea on day 2-3. I drank a shake every day, broth and Jello. You need to take something to stop the diarrhea because you don’t want to get dehydrated. Check with your primary care doctor for advice or go to URGENT CARE.
  7. I decided to only share my decision with my husband and two sons. My parents and relatives are very judgmental and I don’t want to hear their nasty opinions. We live in different states and they probably won’t see me anyhow. When the time comes to see friends or attend my husband’s company Christmas party, I have a plan. If they are nosey and ask how I lost weight, I will say that I saw a dietician and followed a strict liqud diet. It’s the partial truth. They don’t need to know all the details. It’s none of their business.

Who would have thought that cantaloupe could cause so much grief. Thanks for the heads up. Hope you are feeling back to normal by now.

    Sleeping Upright Post Op

I had sleeve surgery 6 days ago. I sleep on my side with my bed slightly elevated. I haven’t had any GERD issues. I had severe GERD before my surgery for about six years. My surgeon asked me to continue taking Omeprazole for six weeks after surgery as a precautionary measure to protect my new stomach. I was very concerned when I read all the stories of patients suffering with GERD after surgery, but so far so good. Fingers crossed!

    Bad cravings after sleeve

Can I make my protein shake with milk? My instructions just say that I am allowed a shake (half per day). I have pre-made and protein powder. I was using 1% milk during my 10 day pre-surgery diet.

    Bad cravings after sleeve

I am on the same liquid diet with protein shakes for one week. I foolishly had it wrong in my head. I had chicken broth yesterday and it felt like a waste of time. Not satisfying at all. Same with Jello. So today I’m rotating and drinking 5 oz of a protein shake and then later 5 oz of protein water. The protein water is disgusting. What is your daily rotation of drinking like?

    Bad cravings after sleeve

Okay, I made a mistake. The clear liquid stage is only for one week. I totally read it wrong in my disillusioned state of recovery. What a relief! I still have five days to go, which feels like eternity.

    Bad cravings after sleeve

Winky, I know how you feel. I am on day 3 after sleeve surgery and my food cravings are strong. My stomach feels so empty and is alway making noises. The food commercials on TV are driving me mad. I couldn’t take it anymore and put a tiny smear of peanut butter on my finger and sucked on my finger. Good grief, what kind of crazy person have I become? All I think about is food. How am I going to survive two weeks of a clear liquid diet? This is torture for me.

Surgery on Wednesday. Scared, 2nd thoughts

My surgery is tomorrow and I know how you feel. I am scared of a lot of things, especially of failing and not being able to eat or drink enough. We’ve come so far in this journey and worked hard to get here. It is such a rare opportunity to get this surgery. We get to reshape our bodies and get a fresh start. I was laying in bed last night at 2:00am, unable to sleep and wondering if I should cancel my surgery. I immediately thought of all the people who desperately want this surgery, but their insurance denied them. I feel fortunate and lucky that everything fell into place and it’s finally happening!

    What's Your Food Nemesis?

DORITOS and extra sharp cheese are my weakness. I’m also a pasta lover and I was so depressed when I found out that pasta is a food to avoid. Hopefully after I reach my goal weight, I can eat just a couple of Doritos to satisfy my taste buds. My dietician said that some of her patients are able to do that.

    Pre Op high protein diet

My dietician put me on a 1,300 calorie diet with 45% carbs, 30% protein and 25% fat. I only had to lose 5 pounds to get a surgery date. Honestly, I ate what I wanted as an evening snack every other night. My healthy snacks were Greek yogurt with fruit, low fat cookies with green tea, or one piece of string cheese with almonds (counted out). I wasn’t ready to sacrifice ALL of my favorite foods. I viewed the diet as a sort of “practice” for eating healthy, tracking my food and drinking more water. You will give up everything and lose a significant amount of weight when you do the two week liquid diet before surgery (which I am doing right now). Maybe you should ask your dietician if you’re supposed to follow the diet 24/7.

What was your "this is it" moment

My turning point was when we went on our usual walk with the dogs in November 2021. I was struggling and out of breath on a small incline and had to stop. My ankles and hips were throbbing. I started crying and my husband was all worried like I was gonna pass out. I said “I’m just having a melt down right now because of what I’ve done to my body. I need to cry it out.” I cried the whole way home. I started Googling weight loss surgery in December. I was surprised that I actually qualified because when I looked into it 5 years ago, my BMI was too low. So I figured this was a sign that it was meant to be.

    What Does Binge Eating mean

I struggled with BED for about six years before I got help. It does not include forced vomiting. That is bulimia. The most difficult part of the disorder for me to overcome was the cycle of overeating at night, followed by food restriction the following day and self-loathing thoughts. It was a roller coaster of emotional eating. I had intense therapy called EMDR to help heal childhood traumas and deal with depression. Once I discovered the root of the problem or “triggers” for overeating, I was able to face it and fix it.

    Question about Labs

I discovered that my bariatric center does not have access to my medical records from my primary care physician or any other medical facilities. I make a point of sharing all test results with my bariatric surgeon.

5 Months out. Just had a whole candy bar.

What? No, that’s not what I said at all. She did not indicate whether or not this was a first time slip up. I am basically asking if she has been consuming candy bars or other sweets for a while. A bariatric patient cannot consume an entire candy bar without getting seriously sick.

5 Months out. Just had a whole candy bar.

But was it just one chocolate bar? It's my understanding that even a small amount of a candy bar will cause dumping syndrome or severe nausea. How was she able to consume an entire king sized candy bar and not be incredibly sick? I'm guessing that this was not the first time. With all due respect, I think there's more to the story. My gut is telling me it's time to reach out for help, like therapy. I had an eating disorder (BED) so I speak from experience. It's a slippery slope and you can't fix it on your own.

    Negative comments from family members

You made the right choice. I did the same thing. My parents are divorced and I didn’t tell them about my upcoming surgery. I don’t want to hear their negative, uninformed and ignorant comments. We don’t talk much anymore and they don’t visit me. I had to move 2,000 miles away (with my husband) from California to Minnesota to start a new life without judgement or ridicule. It was the best decision I ever made.
