Freaking Out A Little (Pre-Op Diet Worries)
Spinoza replied to Sassy Gizmo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Also a hater of the pre-op diet here (mine went on forever too, because my original surgery date was cancelled at the very last minute)! Your surgeon does this for a living, they'll keep you right. Best of luck with your op. -
So good to hear from someone this far out from surgery. It gives me hope. Thank you so much for sharing. 😍

What to do when you don't want to eat?
Spinoza replied to qtdoll's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you meeting your protein and fluid goals? And getting your vitamins? If so I would just go with it. I was never told to hit any particular calorie goal, and what I learned about protein I learned here, LOL. If you're meeting your other goals then you should be OK. If you really want to hit all the goals set for you (and looking at your amazing loss so far I can see the incentive to do that!!!) then I would echo adding healthy fats. I used to eat nut butter from the jar for supper sometimes if I had had a non-hungry day. Best of luck, you're doing brilliantly! -
Minimal Weight Loss
Spinoza replied to murphygirl1's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I think we can't help comparing ourselves to others, we're only human. If you stick to your programme post op you will surely lose weight and the more closely you stick to it the better you should do. Best of luck! Edited to say I lost 17lbs in the first 6 weeks after my sleeve and I reached my goal weight about 10 months post surgery. Am still losing very lowly after 13 months. -
Can someone explain "restriction" to me?
Spinoza replied to Cliffnotes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No drains here either (sleeve). Hope your surgery went well OP and you're out the other end now. -
Not sure I would classify soup and yoghurt and protein shakes as slider foods. I think of those as foods without much nutritional value (carbs like crisps/chips, or sugary things?) If you're not filling up maybe go back to basics - protein first in every meal, veg next, and your soup/yog/shake after that if you need more so you feel fuller for longer?

We all experience different cues when our new stomach is full. But you will quickly learn to recognise yours. Mine is a runny nose and sneezing but I rarely get to that point because I know the signs in between empty and full now.

So popcorn is NOT my friend....
Spinoza replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is absolutely so weird how much interpersonal variation we experience on this journey. I can manage popcorn in any quantity but I can't process one small piece of (cooked) carrot - that's my nemesis, LOL. And stuff that we absolutely cannot process one month becomes do-able the next. All part of listening to our newly fashioned stomach and body. Thanks for sharing - I do love reading your posts and keeping up with your progress - you're doing amazingly. 😍 -
Pureed phase was the time I really regained my taste for proper food. My surgery was cancelled the night before my original date and I made a decision to stick to my pre-op diet (and lost 25lbs while waiting for my new surgery date!) By the time of my pureed phase I hadn't had proper food for 2 months. I pureed EVERYTHING! Meat was my fave because it added so much flavour. Basically I made dinner for my family and then put a few spoons into a blender and had that along with them. The best thing I have ever tasted EVER was a lamb roast Sunday lunch about a fortnight after my surgery - all the veg, all the lamb, lots of gravy, just a tablespoon or two. 😍

I also have a very basic scale I've had for years. No incentive to upgrade and it hasn't inhibited my weight loss or the monitoring thereof even a tiny bit!

Can someone explain "restriction" to me?
Spinoza replied to Cliffnotes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah - agree with everyone else - nothing to do with backing up into the oesophagus/vomiting, everything to do with getting a cue that my pouch is full and that nothing more will fit in easily. I've ignored it a little for various situational reasons over the last year but it's only resulted in discomfort and a renewed initiative to stick with the programme - never random vomiting. I hope you get over this mental hump and have your surgery OP!!! -
How did you choose your goal weight?
Spinoza replied to kbsleeved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I picked mine as the weight I'd been at various times in my adult life and had been happy with. Turns out my body had slightly different plans - am going with it as far as I can. Happy to lose a *little* more to provide a buffer for regain somewhere down the line. Twice in the last week people close to me have told me I don't "need" to lose any more weight. Pi**es me off mightily that folks need to comment in that way. My BMI is now within the 'normal' range. Who would say that to anyone else ever? -
How long to reach goal weight?
Spinoza replied to lorlybeth84's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Took me 10 and a half months to reach my (arbitrarily decided) goal but I started with a lower BMI than some. You're absolutely right - everyone's journey is slightly different. My weight loss was like a reverse exponential curve - I am still losing, but at a rate of 1lb or less per month at 13 months out. I am still loving the journey, although I would have been happy with my total loss some months back. I hope you get to where you would like to be xxx -
It's so good that you've identified this and are addressing it really quickly. I suspect most of us will have had days where we've eaten the wrong things and had all the associated guilt and negative thinking. I echo the recommendation of therapy - it has helped so many people here and it surely can't hurt. I would think of it as another tool to help us lose weight and keep it off for good. Best of luck.

help my husband lol
Spinoza replied to heatherdbby's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Absolutely loving this thread. I would just add - experiences! I can't have the food treats my family used to put in my stocking so I have asked for 'vouchers' for breakfast in bed, one of the children cooking dinner, etc. Really looking forward to my stocking this year and am now gonna suggest some of your things too. -
Killing it with per diem!
Spinoza replied to friesianet's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I travel for work too and I'm loving to hear your experience! I absolutely hate wasting food so I find it really hard to eat a few bites of e.g. a full breakfast and then leave the rest. Sounds like you have this trip sorted. -
This flu has GOT TO GO!!!
Spinoza replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds awful. I really do hope you don't get pneumonia - hopefully the fact you have lost so much weight this year might make the chances of that less likely? Anyway - wishing you a full and speedy recovery. Nobody wants to be sick for the holidays. 🎄 -
Fab fab fab. Thank you so much for sharing your joy!

Amazing - well done you!

Food Before and After Photos
Spinoza replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Absolutely craving that bagel, with ALL of the cream cheese. -
Maybe a direct irritant effect of concentrated alcohol on your stomach lining? I do drink alcohol (one year out from my sleeve) but it's mainly wine (11% as opposed to the 40% in spirits) and luckily I haven't had any ill effects. Also, as Old Salt says - new food intolerances aren't uncommon after bariatric surgery. Might be worth changing around the type of whiskey that you drink to check whether another might suit you better!

Oh I have just got to tell you all that I hadn't given any thought to my neck in the year since my surgery. Since reading this thread, however, I have realised that I also have big time turkey neck. I'm not so into my appearance that I will ever do anything about it, but I do now have a series of photos from various angles in various lighting that I can never unsee. 😂😂😂

I had no restrictions on coffee/caffeine intake pre or post op. Was never a fan of fat free anything so I have made allowance for one proper full fat milk latte or flat white every day and lots of other coffee with semi-skimmed milk. It has worked for me (because that was in keeping with the rules my team set me). Also helps with protein goals. Best of luck on your journey.
