I'm early in the process and trying to lose weight prior to surgery as my surgeon has asked me to do. I know I'm among friends here who know exactly how a mind like mine works. So I'd love to hear whatever tips you have that have worked for you, even temporarily, for this simple question... How do I stop obsessing about food? Even when I'm eating well, way too much of my time is spent wondering when I'll be able to eat again and thinking about that next meal. Right now I'm at work, focused on work, watching a show, and still, my mind every couple of minutes drifts off to my desire to eat. If anyone has any advice for this specific difficulty, I'd appreciate it. Because if I keep thinking about it, eventually, I'm probably going to give in.

I'm way early in the process trying to lose 25 pounds as my surgeon requests. Seems like a good time to get used to drinking protein shakes. So I just had my first one - Syntrax Nectar Grape with water. WOW! This is not going to be easy! 😂

I'm about 1 month away from pre-op diet and came here to ask for vegetarian suggestions for my one protein a day. But you just did the same. Looks really good. Have you tried anything other than tofu?

March 2022 Surgery Buddies
doobie31 replied to LilaNicole20's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Got a March 17th date a couple of weeks ago. Very excited and nervous. And very hopefully it doesn't get postponed for one reason or another. That would be so disheartening at this point. -
My Gastric Sleeve is scheduled for Thursday, March 17th. 11 weeks from now. I'm very excited to have something to count down to.

The actual psych visit (tele-visit) was easy. There was a humongous questionnaire I had to do before the meeting. It went on and one and on and on.
-
I have 25 pounds I have to lose with weigh-ins in Jan and Feb to check on progress. So I'm getting myself in the right mindset now. No more "last hurrahs". Just trying to focus and get mentally prepared for the challenges ahead.
-
That just sounds bizarre but hopefully it's at least an indication you've got a good doctor. I've thought everyone I've seen throughout this process has been very good except my psych eval which was the dumbest thing in the world. Basically asked me over and over if I'm suicidal and told me a hundred times to contact him if I ever was depressed. I happily took the passing grade and am now looking for someone useful to talk to about any issues that come up.
-
Wow, I'm sorry. I guess I am lucky. I had my first appointment on Oct. 25 and things went pretty smoothly from there. I was able to get all necessary evals and tests done pretty quickly. I hope the long wait isn't too discouraging.

Whatever stage you're at - pre-op, honeymoon, long term - if you track, I'd love to see some food logs. I'm early in the process and I'd like to see specifically what some others end up eating in a day.
-
That's definitely how I expect to feel. But you're going through with it - yay! Good luck. Be sure to update us.

Just had the Syntrax Nectar Double Stuffed (Oreo) with 1% milk. Oh yeah! Now we're talking. Also had the Lemonade with ice cold water and was much better than the Grape with room temp water. So I think I can do this.
-
Thank you very much. Feeling good on 500 cals a day! Wow.
-
Savory shakes - that sounds great. I'm a vegetarian, but I'm sure there are some out there. That's a great idea. Doobie.
-
Yes the Syntrax but I'll keep that in mind and try other choco and vanillas. I want to get used to non-milk milks, too, since I can be a bit lactose intolerant. I plan to try soy and almond and hopefully make the switch, but not there yet.

I had the chocolate truffle with 1% milk this afternoon. SO MUCH BETTER!!!

Anyone else terrified?
doobie31 replied to sunhineG's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've never been under anesthesia and that has me scared more than the actual surgery. I keep imagining that moment of counting backwards then the next thing I know, I'm in recovery. I think everyone is scared to some extent, especially if it's your first surgery. But just have to put brains over emotion - I'm far more likely to keel over from being obese than I am from this surgery. -
Am I really going to live on 1000 calories?
doobie31 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm a 50 year old male, 6'1, weight 425 pounds. I'm healthy, exercise regularly, but I'm unable to control my weight so I'm finally pursuing surgery. Right now I average around 3000 calories a day and often splurge well beyond that. When I've successfully lost weight in the past (last time about 5 years ago), I ate about 2500 calories a day. Reading these boards, I'm seeing so much talk of living on 1000 calories per day, at least for a few months. I. Just. Can't. Imagine. Those of you that have done it ... HOW??? -

Thank you @Bill Potts for sharing your MyFoodDiary. I definitely want to look at that. I sent a friend request. @Officially Not Fatty Matty: That is a such an interesting story. I've not read one like it before in all my reading. So fascinating. I can't imagine anything like that happening to me. But I would be thrilled with half of that success. I really appreciate all the detail. Thank you again, everyone. -

1Thank you so much everyone. @Butterflyeffect, I'm about the same height as you and pretty active, especially when I'm a lower weight, so hearing you can eat like that and still lose weight is helpful. And of course, I do trust "my team". So far they're all great and I can't wait to continue down the path. -
Thank you both. You're both males in the range of where I'm starting so this is so helpful. @vikingbeast Only 10 weeks post op - do you ever do protein shakes anymore?

Thank you so much! What a helpful post. I'm giving myself until after the Thanksgiving weekend and then I'll start tracking everything and make a concerted effort to drop some pre-surgery pounds (wait until Monday .... no overweight person every said that). I have made small improvements already but I know, realistically, there's only so much I'm going to do before the holiday weekend. But wow, I'm honestly looking forward to eating like this and feeling satisfied. -

I did see a psychologist but it was just making sure I'm mentally fit. Thanks for suggestion, I will definitely consider it. -
Tips for not obsessing about food

Thank you for all the advice. I had a pretty successful day at work. Try to stay distracted and also stayed away from some trigger foods. Hopefully home goes just as well.
