  1. I think sometimes it's easy to forget that the surgery is a *tool*, not a substitute for self-control. The most important weight loss tool any of us have is between our ears.
  2. Not to be "that guy" but the procedure is called a Roux-En-Y

    Body odor?

I have this problem! I'm down 118 pounds, I'm a year out and my deodorant DOES NOT WORK. I shower regularly, I eat my vegetables, I am not in ketosis, and am well hydrated. I'm baffled and embarrassed. I bet i've tried 10 different kinds of deodorant and none of them work the way they did before my surgery.

    Experience with transfer addiction

I have had a few dalliances with what could be "transfer addiction" both good and bad...I definitely have overindulged in cannabis a few times since my surgery to a point where my fiance was asking me if i was "self medicating", and I also feel like I am somewhat dependent on riding my motorcycle as a dopamine fix...which isn't bad, it works out my shoulders/hips/core and gets me some sunshine.

    Jack link's meat sticks

I like Stubbs ones too, as well as the Takis meat sticks...in the absence of other options, jerky/meat snacks can be a lifesaver. If you happen upon Epic bars, they're sort of a similar thing but they're softer and have about half as much salt (I LOVE the bison cranberry ones). I ride a motorcycle and sometimes when I stop, the choices at the gas station are pretty slim pickins but almost every gas station has jerky. (I wouldn't make them too regular of an indulgence because, as others have said, they're quite high in sodium...but in a pinch you could do worse!)

    Need more protein!! Please help

Are you able to eat purees yet? Oikos Pro yogurt is 25g protein per cup...however I would be surprised if you were able to eat much more than 1/4 of the container in one sitting at 2 weeks out. (For some added punch, I like adding PB2 peanut butter powder to the banana flavor!, 6 more grams of fiber in 2 TBSP for 60 calories)

Length of time on PPI or other antiacid

I am almost a year out and am still taking both omeprazole and Pepcid every day...the acid reflux comes back every time I stop, and considering that acid reflux literally almost killed me back in November...I'm not playing around with it. Even though I know the PPI isn't great for me, I'm still taking it (under my doctor's supervision).

    High protein snacks

Which is how I prefer to operate myself however he is diabetic so his own journey has its own rules, and it's better for him to avoid sugar altogether. I agree many of the sugar free and low carb convenience foods have far more calories than I'm comfortable with, often no lower than their "conventional" counterparts.

New Here, Think I was Born Obese (my poor mom!)

I have BCBS and was only required to 90 days of supervised diet?

    High protein snacks

They just came out with some reformulated Zero Sugar Reese's and my fiance swears they taste exactly the same.

    mayonnaise

I usually don't do lowfat dairy/egg based products because you do need SOME fat (your brain is made of fat!)...but the Kraft olive oil mayonnaise tastes the same and is about half as many calories etc. I try to just use less in general. I'd rather have half as much of the real deal than a whole bowl of nasty tasting "substitutes".

    What about NON slider foods?

Fibrous vegetables seem like they keep me full forever in a pleasing way. Rice, pasta, and bread fill me up way too fast and keep me from eating stuff that's more rich in nutrients so I still try to avoid those almost 1 yr post op.

Looking for road trip podcast suggestions!

Among the podcasts I like: Maintenance Phase (mostly about the world of "diet culture", expect some fun send-ups of fad diets and "wellness influencers") Behind the Bastards (the stories of the worst people in history, both modern and ancient) You Must Remember This (stories of Hollywood's first century, their Charles Manson series was especially interesting.) You're Wrong About (debunking historical scandals)

    “Stuck” Sensation?

Do you have acid reflux? It could be irritation from GERD.

20 moths out and I think Im in maintenance ?

I am one of these people, unfortunately...I'm incredibly short and the weight loss has revealed I have a fairly small frame in addition, so my maintenance calories will likely be somewhere between 1200-1300...I have 4 pounds to go to my goal weight, though, so my weight loss has slowed considerably.

    30 second Protein cookies

Could you make this with PB2 powder? A big yummy peanut butter cookie sounds like what the doctor ordered

My brain still thinks I'm a size 28

I have gone from a size 20 to a size 2 in a little less than a year. I CONSTANTLY pick up clothing I know fits me and wonder how on earth they will ever fit me...while I don't think my brain still thinks I'm exactly the same size I was before surgery it's definitely 40-50 pounds behind. I have to try on EVERYTHING because if I pick it up and look at it, I'll automatically buy something 2-3 sizes too big.

    PMS causing issues?

My PMS has gotten much worse since my surgery. I bloat a LOT no matter how little salt I eat, and I turn into a raging psychopath for about 24 hours a couple days before I start. It's miserable, and I'm very reluctant to go back on birth control because I don't want it to make me gain the weight back (and I don't need it for contraception.) Ugh.

3 months post VSG and NOTHING

Dietitians need to ask enough questions to understand where you ARE, both with your ability to prepare your own food and your overall understanding of nutrition. It sounds like you and your dietitian are not on the same page and she is assuming you understand things they are not explaining well. There are a lot of ways to reach 60g of protein in a day that will be too high in fat, calories, and carbs to result in weight loss. Sometimes I feel like the heavy, heavy emphasis on protein does us a disservice, especially when there are so many high-protein "convenience foods" that are high in fat (and calories) to cater to Keto dieters (hello, Quest cookies! 230 calories! that's not a snack, that's a meal). Protein is a big component but in the absence of other, concrete advice about WHAT to actually eat, if you don't have a huge knowledge base of nutrition, it's easy to get lost.
  20. Derp I just realized I answered this question already

    Citric Acid in drink mixes

This is going to vary a lot from person to person...I was told to avoid citrus/tomato immediately following my surgery but I haven't had any issues with drink mixes.
  22. If what you are coughing up starts to smell/taste REALLY bad (like spoiled cheese, rotting meat, etc), go to the hospital. I aspirated in my sleep about 2 months after my surgery and ended up in the hospital running a 104 degree fever with bacterial pneumonia. It's not something to play with, and the bad smell was what tipped my partner off that something was very wrong.

Will I ever enjoy eggs again?

I was one of these people! Tried eggs as my first "soft food", had a horrible experience...but I tried them again 3-4 months out and it was fine!

    Found a new protein drink

I love those Alani shakes, especially the Fruity Cereal flavor if you can find it. Tastes like Froot Loops!

    low carb pre op diet

Keto flu is temporary, it can last anywhere from 3 days to a week.
