    pre-op diet question (whaaa?)

My doc had a specific shake for us to use and if we didn't want that he gave us specific guidelines as to how much of each NI item. If your doc didn't specify or give you guidelines then I would assume that it doesn't matter for you. If he did, then does the shake you got fill the bill? If so, you're good. If no, you're not.

How long before I can play tennis?

You should ask your surgeon to be sure but I think that won't be any problem. Usually we have lifting/weight restrictions but this will mostly be stretching, bending, running etc and I don't think that will give you any trouble, especiall by early Aug. Good luck!

    Banded May 14, 2009 - 4:00 PM

Are you following your doc's post op instructions? If so, you probably aren't "hurting your recovery"...if no, then maybe.

    WARNING! BCBS/Blue Cross of California

Good grief! You've gotten good advice; I'll just wish you luck. I hope it all falls into place for you and I hope you "get" that first place because I agree they are in breach of contract. I think they may just be trying to price-gouge. Shame on them.

    HELP! What to do???

I love it. I finally have restriction (it took a while...my doc is conservative and my senior year of nursing school made it hard to get in for fills etc) and it is a freaking miracle. Seriously. It isn't for everyone...if you graze for example you can "eat around" the band, and you are still supposed to make healthy choices and exercise. If you're willing to do that, I can't imagine why it wouldn't "work" for you. It "works" for lots of people! If I were you I'd go to a seminar (using a different doc from the one your friend and company use) and decide on my own.

8cc in band with no restriction

Cortney how fast did the surgeon tell you that you'd lose? And when? and if you just got banded mid April you ALREADY have 6cc? That's really aggressive. For most of us, the first 6 weeks are considered a time to HEAL not lose! You've lost 10 pounds...you're ahead of the curve by the 1-2 pounds weekly most of us are told to expect. I think you're being too hard on yourself, or maybe your surgeon didn't do adequate teaching about how and when the band does it's thing! You're really doing well; sorry you're unhappy about it!

    Warning...it's a #2 problem

Gus-Gus you should ask your surgeon. You may not be getting enough fiber (and you have to drink a lot of water with it or it will have the opposite effect) or you may need a stool softener. A stool softener shouldn't give you diarrhea, but ask your surgeon for advice! :cursing:

    Phospo Soda (sp)?

OK I had to google it. It's a bowel prep, like mag citrate, to clean you out before surgery. I'm sure it's vile.
  9. Thanks for your congrats on my degree! I'm still numb!

    Please help

If it were me I'd call her.

8cc in band with no restriction

Have you asked your doctor? Are you sure you don't have a leak? And how much does your band hold? Are you counting the "primer" that's in the band to start in that total? Please realize that it's almost impossible to tighten a band up all the way and the person not feel something (remember how small that hole is once the band is filled? and add stomach tissue to that...that hole isn't big.) You need to talk to your doc; you either have a leak, or a large band, or a VERY strong esophagus, or you have miscalculated how much is in there. Good luck!

    Throwing Up Blood

Another voice for the "not good to throw up daily, let alone blood". You've probably ruptured a vessel in your esophagus. You do need to see your doc asap; from what I've read this type of thing is something that if you catch it early is no big deal and if you ignore it it can cause band removal. Take care of yourself!

Any advice on how to start jogging....

luluc gave you the web site I've heard of...couch to 5k. Haven't done it but know a few "board" people on another board who say they have and that it works! Good luck!

    Warning...it's a #2 problem

I had diarrhea when I was on liquids only but as soon as I moved on to mushies (and had lots of fiber rich foods like refried beans) it stopped. It's "normal" in a way, because anytime you put something in the top it moves things along the whole route, but it isn't "normal" to have to have a bowel movement every time you ingest anything, as you know. Sounds like your digestive system is just REALLY moving things along! If I were you I'd give a quick call to my surgeon. S/He may say more fiber but he may have a different approach. :cursing: Make sure you stay hydrated!

    Phospo Soda (sp)?

You mean puked? I had to drink mag citrate...many of us have to do something to "clean you out" and most of it isn't pleasant! BUT worth it in the long run! :cursing:
  16. Geez dude you can't even read. I didn't tell her not to eat pizza and I'm not hypocritical...you wouldn't know how I'm doing on the band if I didn't put it out there for everyone to see! Someone must have messed in your cocoa puffs or something. Chill out.

    Struggling with emotions!!

    Debbie thank you very much!
  18. I got 1.5 cc's in my 14 cc band. Doc's choice. He's conservative. and it took me until the 5th fill to feel it.

    "The Rules"

We all get different "rules" from our docs; I was thinking more of the rules we all have in common. Not all docs say no snacks, not all docs say protein first, etc Exercise, though, that one I forgot. I think they almost ALL want us to exercise!
  20. RestlessMonkey

    "The Rules"

Each doc is very different but there are a few things the all seem to require in common (or rather most all...there's ALWAYS an exception) and those things are: small bites well chewed don't drink with meals Follow Your doc's pre- and post-op diet until healed That's it. At least IMHO...There's not really a hard and fast "list" that all docs give their patients...just those things above that all docs seem to want. Otherwise it's pretty much open season! For everything you're told to do you can find someone on here whose doc contradicts it!

    pre op diet confusion

I'm not sure how he knew, believe it or not. But not an xray..probably ultrasound, and liver enzymes, and palpating it, and my weight and age! And I had a THREE week preop diet so you can see why I thought "oh wow I'll cheat and he'll NEVER know!" NOT! I can laugh about it now but not be cavalier about it. I had to drink 64 oz Water (at least), 2-3 of a specific Protein shake, and 3 oz lean poultry or fish and some green veggies, and that's it. no butter no SF Jello nothing else. And when I did what he wanted the weight dropped off of me, and the fat from my liver. So do what your doc wants and you'll be fine. Don't cheat just because some people on here think it doesn't matter...I am sure no one would want to intentionally derail or undermine someone else but if you trust your doc to operate on you, trust him to tell you what to eat pre and post op! Good luck!

Am I too fat for the band?

I don't know what "I'm a bloater" means but this is probably something you could discuss with a surgeon who does lap band AND other surgeries. I weighed 405 when I got my band and I love it.
  23. RestlessMonkey

    Almost a year

I was under the impression that things like Beans, ground meat, and chips were sliders? IF so, then the band wouldn't really be of much use, would it? If you were fine until the "taco bell" incident then maybe this was just a fluke. I know I can only eat like 3-4 ounces of steak , but if I heat up chili I can eat a ton of it. It may depend as much on what you ate as on your fill. And as Cathy said, you can lose Fluid over time so you may not be right at 8.7ccs any more. It's not time to panic! Just see how you do with "solids" and have your doc check your fill level if you still think you can overeat.
  24. RestlessMonkey

    Stupid mistake 8-days post op!!

I was told not to eat anything that causes peristalsis (digestion) and I am a firm believer to do only what your doc says and NOT what you read here. I read about people who cheated on their preop diet and got the band just fine, or didn't even HAVE a preop diet. SO I figured I could do that too. I lost 15 pounds doing my own thing and guess what? NO BAND because my liver didn't shrink. So please call your doc, do what he tells you. Different docs have different styles of surgery, place the band a little differently etc. Each doc should know what is right for his or her own patients. My doc says what happens is people advance their diets too quickly, think they got away with it, then have a slip down the road and think "Why me!?" Odds are you are ok but if you ate "ahead of the game", let your doc tell you that you're ok, not posters here (however well meaning we all may be!)

    pre op diet confusion

dhall111 My doc explained his diet and rationale to me (after the fact) I won't post it here because I don't mean to "diss" someone else's doc or diet etc but you might ask your surgeon why s/he prefers a certain diet over another. Mine had good solid reasons for his.
