What is the pre-op psych eval about?

It does depend. I had to answer what seemed like reams of questions (part of the MMPI) and then had a quick consult "So you just can't lose weight" me: "No, I can lose, but I can't keep it off" that kind of thing. "Do you drink to excess?" me "Not anymore, not since my wild misspent youth. Now I get too sleepy" LOL It does really vary widely.

    Passed stomach stapling?

You probably know that your safest best course is to just discuss this with a surgeon. Hopefully you'll find a skilled one who will be able to advise you! Good luck!

    Seiriously annoyed!!

Thanks bristlecone! but, darn, now I feel like I need to at least TRY to be nice again. pffft. LOL
  4. RestlessMonkey

    okay people!!!

It's entirely possible that no one who has had surgery at Tripler has read your posts. Have you tried entering TAMC and/or Tripler in the search engine?

    Seiriously annoyed!!

I'm just sleep deprived. (even "restless" monkeys need a little sleep!) LOL AND exasperated at people like your sister's friend who are so cavalier with their health, AND exasperated with the enablers who tell them it's ok. Sometimes things aren't ok. BUT Thanks for the congrats! I was very pleased! Now, I have to get a real job! LOL

    Silly question

When I read this I thought you meant "during surgery". LOL They did at my office. I'm sure if you really really DO NOT want it they will pass, but it can be a great visual aid

    Seiriously annoyed!!

Shoot Jennifer just tell her to post on this board. There'll be plenty to just electronically "pat her on the head" and tell her it's no big deal, that we all slip up. Ok that was catty but I couldn't resist. Hopefully she'll call the doc and they will scare some sense into her.

Glad I could help lift your spirts...your happy face always lifted mine!

Boo Boo Kitty You don't know me but I wanted to tell you that I miss your smiling friendly face on the LBT "banner". Change isn't ALWAYS good.

    very weak

I think you mean 8/18? Honestly most of us have enough fat stores so that, as long as we are hydrated, we can handle going without nutrition for a while. I'm sure you had blood work and so on; he wouldn't have put you on such a diet if it jeopardized your health. You wouldn't want to take Vitamins on an empty stomach anyway. I'm sure you're just healing and truthfully some people feel weak because they expect to, not eating. Try to focus on how much weight you are likely losing and how much you'll enjoy being thinner, see if that helps. AND also if you feel really bad, call your surgeon. He's the pro!

    Stretched pouch????

More likely is that you still need more "fill". Very few people get good restriction the first time out. Call your surgeon if you're worried. However while it's never good to overeat, it takes more than one or two times to stretch out your stomach.

    Band size?

I asked my surgeon, post op.

What pre-op test are most having to do?

It REALLY depends. I had to do an upper GI, an abdominal ultrasound, blood work, chest x-ray, cleared by an internist. I did need an ecg (at 53 and weighing 405 I'd guess I'd need that! LOL) but it was fine and since I have no symptoms of heart disease, didn't need a cardiac clearance. The sleep apnea and stress test are common tests though. Many, but not all, have to do them. Of course there's the psych consult many have to do, and a nutrition consult. I took care of all of it easily, one "long" day at my surgeon's office, one "long" day at the hospital where he practices,. It was no big deal. I'm sure your surgeon will have tests closer to surgery. No need for you to do them all this far out.
  14. Could it possibly be gas? Probably not since you feel pulling, not just tightness and pressure. I'm sorry you feel so bad; Crying with pain isn't anything to take lightly.
  15. Good luck. I'll be honest with you; even WITHOUT any "mental health" issues (like we don't all have some) I can totally see how, at 2 weeks post op, you'd be freaked about company. Without being un-pc (don't know your family's religious beliefs and they aren't any of my business either) could you put them all off until "the holidays"? That would give you a little more time to adapt and come up with a workable plan, plus you'd be on solids by then (well probably). See, on the one hand, you sister hasn't come in 20 years. How can you turn her away? BUT on the other, she's managed to not visit for 20 years, what's another month? Anyway just realize that not wanting a lot of last minute company (no matter how loved) when you have food issues and will be 2 weeks post op and drinking liquids only, is normal. It's a healthy reaction, an OMG NO!!! makes sense. Because it IS important for you to follow your post op diet. I hope you figure something out that can make you and your son happy (first and foremost)...and can accommodate all. Good luck!

    Hi! My Name is Liz.

Thanks! You'll probably exceed my loss; I didn't "diet" (like many do) UNTIL I got good restriction and my doc is pretty conservative with fills. His approach and my last semester of nursing school conspired to make it almost 9 months before I finally "felt the love" as it were...so I bet you'll blow me out of the water! Good luck!
  17. Have you discussed this with your therapist? I'd think if your son is living in the barracks (very possible for a single person in the military) or has too small a "place", maybe your son and the girlfriend can cook. I bet your sis would help too.
  18. Not everyone gets nauseated. I never did. Seriously; not even a fleeting thought of nausea. If you're worried about it tell your surgeon AND the anesthesiologist; and if you've had surgery and had an issue with nausea be SURE and tell them. They don't want you vomiting either! And not everyone has to do the hep injections (are you sure it's heparin and not lovenox? both work but I think the lovenox is more user-friendly, less bruising) but they will help prevent clots. Good luck! Deep Breaths!

    Hi! My Name is Liz.

Welcome and good luck! Hopefully your husband will come around, but if not, he'll get over it as you get more slim and healthy.
  20. Either the company, or my surgeon's office, probably has samples. I just figured "how bad can they be" LOL Right now fortunately I have no issues taking all my meds the old fashioned way but if that ever changes I WILL get samples first!

    Cancer sucks!!!

Yes, Cancer sucks, too true. That should be a campaign slogan! So sorry your family is under siege! Hang in there.
  22. Propofol can be used. It's like lots of other drugs (including tylenol)...safe enough when handled properly, administered for the right reason in the right dose, deadly if mishandled. Unless you have a bad reaction, which is why the anesthesiologist gets the big bucks. They knock you out, and bring you back, and have to know what to do if things go south.
  23. My doc's office sells them; I found them, well, vile beyond words actually. So be smarter than the monkey and get samples before you invest! I'm sure some people like them and some can tolerate them. I unfortunately wasn't in either of those groups!

    Seriously curious

You go girl. You try. The mods like me, they really like me. Oh wait, that's Sally Field and the oscars
  25. RestlessMonkey

    Seriously curious

Yes, Although you could revise to the sleeve, bypass, or the duodenal switch, and in a PINCH could probably revise to vertically banded gastroplasty (you obviously have NOT done your research) I suggest you just get your jaw wired shut.
