Surgery on Thursday, Work on Monday??

I recovered really FAST I slept on my side the first night etc....and I had my surgery friday and went to school (I'm a student) on Tues. I THOUGHT I felt fine but for example took a math test and made really stupid mistakes (and I'm a math whiz) So although I thought I was fine, I wasn't. I'd go back tues or weds, if at all possible. You will probably feel much better by then, but still be a little mentally fuzzy...and you may have a tougher time recovering from the anesthesia etc. Your throat may be sore from the 'tube, etc. Take another day or two if possible.

Surgery on Thursday, Work on Monday??

And, as I said, it depends on your job. If you have a sedentary office job, you probably can. If you are on your feet like a waitress or a nurse, you probably need more time. If you are very active like a firefighter, you need a few weeks. So, what is your job?

    Dealing with the Pre-OP.....

Just hang in there. You don't want to wake up in recovery (like I did) and find out your doc couldn't place the band because your liver is too fatty! THAT provides a good degree of motivation, let me tell you! Learn from my silly mistake! AND postop you MUST do liquids if your surgeon directs to allow your sutured band to heal (the tummy churns when you digest anything that isn't liquid) It's worth it though. You can do it!

Fill Requirments As You Lose Weight?

    it gets looser.

    Depressed Newbie

You were not properly educated about the band. Once you heal, until you get sufficient fills to reach that "sweet spot" they talk about here (where you ave satiety with only a small amount of food, and it lasts for up to 5-6 hours) you are essentially "wide" open...like you were before the band. Band loss is a slow process of 1-2 pounds a week. it will happen.

    Anyone with FVL?

I THINK for the purposes of recovery, RNY and the band are comparable...RNY may take a little longer but not much, and it's done laparoscopically, too. The point is obesity and anesthesia, I think...not necessarily the specific procedure. But again, I'm just guessing. I hope I'm right and she'll just do some blood work and find out you aren't at a higher risk and it won't hold you up at all! AND call and get an appt. to discuss it!! She told you she wanted to meet with you about it....so you should be able to get in to see her. If she wants additional tests OR if for some reason she doesn't feel able to do your surgery, you would need to find out sooner rather than later, right? Good luck to you! I know it will all work out fine for you!

    Anyone with FVL?

I don't have it, but after googling "FVL and bariatric surgery" it seems in my VERY LIMITED explorations that you can have the surgery but they need to take additional steps to make sure you don't have clots or dvt or emboli post op. Bariatric patients by definition are at greater risk, as are you...and depending on your factors (it says to do a complete coag workup) standard precautions may not be enough; you may need a filter in your inferior vena cava to protect you. SO I'm thinking she's going to want some extra blood work on you etc. Again...I don't know, of course, just did some quick research. Hopefully someone can post who has 1st hand knowledge. When is your appt with the surgeon?

    Trouble taking pills

I didn't have any trouble taking pills, drinking, etc from the minute they gave me water. BUT I think I may be in the minority on that....so it's best to have the liquid just in case. My doc gave me pain "pills" too (the hydrocodone he prescribed the 1st time...in elixir form...makes me vomit so I couldn't take it) but I didn't really need them. The tylenol took care of things for me.

    Trouble taking pills

Yes...in case there is swelling. Liquid tylenol for adults is available...and your doc will probably prescribe a liquid pain med.

    pre-surgery appetite has returned

I may be in the minority here but until we're filled, the band isn't really doing what we expect it to. And think of what we "can" eat on mushies, for example? I believe this is a time to let the band heal. I get my 1st fill at 6 weeks out...and it may take several attempts to give me the satiety we signed on for. I'm watching it....but not obsessing. It is a slow process, it is not gastric by pass. I'll lose when my body is ready and the band has healed.

    Narrowminded Coworkers

Perhaps I need to tell my boss that it's time for another sensitivity training session You said it!

Woohoo! Yay things are moving along!

Congratulations! What a great new year it will be for you!
  14. OH and is the doc going to remove your gall bladder when he does the band? You won't even miss it if he does (except no more painful attacks, that is)
  15. I'm SO GLAD you posted! Is your hospital downtown in the medical center area? My SIS lives in Pasadena and is riding out the storm! So now I have 2 of you there to worry about! Sorry you're stuck but glad you'll be safe!
  16. RestlessMonkey

What did you fear the most?

I went through 10 months of behavioral therapy on my own to learn why I overeat and how to stop it. I wouldn't think the band actually can control emotional overeating or "head hunger" as they call it. I've been told the band will handle "physiologic" hunger but head hunger is your thing to handle..
  17. RestlessMonkey

    I am so freaking bummed!!!!

Your old doc should still have records generated from the NP regardless. It should all be in YOUR file. Call and get what you need from your old doc.
  18. Personally I think they are bad for you. We have bacteria in our colons for a reason....WE NEED IT! My doc, too, says at least 1 year post op to push protein first. Sounds like you are kind of abandoning that; that's not good for you I wouldn't think. JMO of course...but I think "cleanses" are mostly bogus.

    Toe dipper

For me it was a no brainer. There is no way I want my innards cut up and reconfigured. uh uh. No. AND the lap band can be tightened 5 years down the road. The sleeve (and the pouch created by the by pass) are pretty much set. If you stretch it (and it is STRETCHY, it's stomach) you are out of luck. FINALLY...if I have a disease or issue that dictates I need it, my band can be unfilled (literally no restriction) or even removed if necessary.
  20. RestlessMonkey

    Sweet spot?????

i don't like the term myself but it refers to restriction in your band...when it's enough to keep you full for a good while but not so much that you can't eat most foods.
  21. I wore my bra as soon as they let me dress....and they didn't make me walk the halls because I got up and used the restroom and then got to go home. I did take a larger bra so it wouldn't be too tight around my ribcage, but I'm large chested and it was actually uncomfortable until I got the girls up and off my torso and suture sites. So if you're a bra wearer, take a comfy one.
  22. If they are low carb, sugar free, and fairly high in protein (17 g or more) then yes, I'd say so, especially since they didn't give you a specific one to use.

weight loss pre op on liquid diet

I understand! There is SO much info on here (and on the 'net) and so much of it conflicts, it's hard to know what to do! I hope you love your band. I love mine already and I don't even have any restriction yet! Good luck!

weight loss pre op on liquid diet

Sweetie79 I'm sure your doc has done bloodwork on you. Judging by that and your weight he (she) can tell if you have a large or fatty liver. If your doc doesn't feel you need a preop diet, you probably don't. If your doc wants you on one, he will most likely tell you exactly what he wants you to do (they are all different!) If you are worried about your liver, call your doc's office and ask if they want you on a diet. When is your surgery scheduled? You really don't have to fret if your doc isn't worried about it!

weight loss pre op on liquid diet

no that won't happen! Just be glad you don't have to do it!
