    8 Days post op

don't eat until the doctor tells you you can! please! and yes, your pouch is 2 oz. but, how big is the passage between it and the rest of your stomach? Until you are restricted, most things will still pass through easily. so you will be hungry! but please quit eating ahead of your post op diet that is dangerous for your healing!

    Medicine Questions

You need to discuss this with your surgeon and your prescribing doctor. I'd ask the surgeon first, for direction, because while he is NOT the prescribing doctor (as you said) he IS the doc familiar with the band and how differently we absorb pills etc once it's in place. He can give you some guidance so you'll know what to tell your prescribing doctor when you talk to him (and you most likely WILL need to talk to him!) Once you are banded and restricted, often time release pills are contraindicated because they just sit up in the little pouch and dissolve (timing is all wrong). Your best bet is to take this to the docs!

Lump in the middle of my chest .....

Did you tell your doctor about it when he did the unfill? If so, what did he say? If not, maybe you should call and tell him about it?

    Flu

First ask your surgeon if you can have something nutritious while you are fighting the flu. He might prefer you have protein drinks instead of soup....but ask him. Then realize you've only been sick 4 days and just started your antibiotics. Your surgery is two weeks away. Reassess how you feel next week; that's plenty of time to reschedule depending on how you feel. Odds are, you'll feel a lot better by then.
  6. Where is your port? Depending on where it is, you could have some other issue and you just "THINK" it's your port. Either way I too am one to say "Tell your doctor and have him do whatever test necessary"

    Hi all ...new member

Ask your doctor where you can get that type of iron supplement. If you can't find it, odds are most of his patients can't. He'll have a source for you.

    Fill Probl;em: Band losing Fluid

My surgeon is another one who takes it slow! (And no I get free fills for a year so he's not doing it for the money) He took a good while to explain why, and I found research to support his position, and I'm totally on board with it. Sure, I'd like to lose faster but if that had been my total goal, I'd have gone for bypass. I want long term loss and a normal life.

I not a doc! I'm a nursing student so don't you EVEN call me doc! LOL AH I see....the "Dr Sonny Cavazos" is MY doctor, not me. If I can remember how to edit my profile, I'll elaborate. When I joined, lots of posters were listing their surgeons at the end of their signature info...
  13. I don't really know...I am Tricare Standard and used (and LOVE LOVE LOVE) Dr. Sonny Cavazos (he works out of northeast Baptist) For me, I went to the seminar 7/10 and had my (first) surgery 8/11. It was fast (I wanted it that way, wanted it done before school started) and wonderful. Preop tests included psych eval, nutritionist consult, upper gi test, ecg, blood work, abdominal ultrasound, chest x-ray (most of that was done in 2 different appointments). I especially loved that Northeast Baptist has a wonderful lady named Nadia who's sole job is to get all the paperwork in line for our insurance companies. She did it ALL. It was so easy!

So my experience was great all the way through!

Tell you what; I'll send you a link to a tutorial if you quit calling yourself an idiot! I couldn't do mine either and I am FAR from an idiot! http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f5/ticker-tutorial-pictures-41782/

    Recently Banded and Can't Stop Vomiting . . .

I'm one of those whose surgeon doesn't put fill in until healed. thank goodness! He said "there's some primer in there, it's negligible" when I asked him. Please stay on top of it; you can get dehydrated really fast! I hope it resolves soon! That's just wrong!

    Medifast and Low carbs :(

I love processed foods like white flour, sugar, all high in carbs (not so much veggies with carbs in them LOL) but honestly when I go on a high protein low fat low carb diet I feel really wonderful. You'd think I would find it easier to stick on it becaused of that; I don't. (no such luck) but usually low/no carb (esp processed foods) means high high energy for me! Maybe you'll get that boost in a few days or so. The first few days I'm on it I'm so darned hungry, I don't know if I am tired or wired, I'm just mosly starved!

    Almost 2 weeks since surgery

My doc does fills after 6 weeks (the first one) then every 4-6 weeks after. And I have more bad news; I'm at fill 3 and still get hungry and have no restriction that I'm aware of (although I'm not gaining and not dieting so I guess I am eating less, as my doc said I would) For some it takes 4 or more fills/unfills to get in the zone. Just tough it out; it's not bypass, it's slower, but it works if you do your part!
  18. Check with your surgeon. And the only person you're hurting is you...you don't need to say things like "I know, I suck"...it doesn't hurt us that you ate a burger, just your own self. You're the one who needs the apology!

    Phentermine

I took it back right after they took redux and the other part of phen (phentermine)-fen (fenfluramine)off the market. It didn't help me, just raised my blood pressure. And unfortunately once you quit taking it, if you eat like you "did", you'll gain everything back.

    Fatty Liver

I think you've probably seen that on my signature line and the answer is obviously no, not really! I was given a preop diet (three weeks) to shrink my liver and I assume my surgeon gave me one that long because I was severely obese (405 pounds 5'5") and because of all the test results he had (I didn't quiz him) HOWEVER...because I had read on here about many many people who "cheated" on their MUCH shorter preop diets and had no problems (and I'm sure they were telling the truth and not intending to mislead anyone) I figured I could "get away" with it, too. SO during my 3 weeks I lost 15 pounds but did it "my" way. My liver was still too "thick". Shamed and angry at myself, I did exactly what my surgeon told me for 2 1/2 weeks and lost 17 MORE pounds and got my band that time. Surgeons don't prescibe such a diet to everyone, I assume (not a doc) because not all people NEED to do one. Furthermore, as you go through these boards, you'll see poster after poster who "cheat". If docs made everyone do 3 weeks preop liver shrink, people would just cheat and get that (dangerous) mentality that it is ok to cheat. (it's really important to follow your docs rules post op, too...while you're healing especially) So just do what your doctor said and you'll be fine. And people on here who say "i did so and so and got away with it"..I'm sure they did. They are lucky! THey most likely mean well! But do what your doctor said, incase you are one of the ones that will NOT get away with it. OH and my liver wasn't diseased....just big. So I've said "fatty" but maybe I should just say "too fat". He said it was healthy, just had too much fat stored in it to get it moved out of he way (he tried!). So I didn't have any liver disease...thank goodness!

    Pneumonia after surgery??

Just a quick guess, now that you are slimmer, are you more active? Do you go out more? (shopping, the mall, dinner, whatever?) Odds are you are around people more and so are more susceptible! Just a guess, of course. The band itself shouldn't make you more prone. Only other thing...if you aren't eating right and are now thinner but unhealthy...

    Hello from Canada..

I wouldn't borrow trouble, as my granny used to say. Your surgeon may not restrict caffeine and if s/he does, ask why. If it's just "makes some people hungry" and doesn't impact you that way, then you can decide. I do NOT support the "ignore your doctor what does HE know" mindset, but as I said, I've had coffee and tea without ill effect since about 1 month post op. (I wanted time to heal just in case there was something odd about caffeine and healing)

    Help! I'm sooo hungry!

Each person should follow his/her docs rules and ask the DOC if in doubt....solid foods too early can tear the stitches and do damage...and shelly2b's doc even told her she "probably" was ok just eating mushies! Not to be a Grinch; it is HARD to stick to the post op diet but there's a reason for it. We all heal differently and even surgeons have different surgical techniques etc. SO do what your doc says, and if you cheat, let him/her know so they can reassure you, check you out, whatever. The rules aren't there just for punishment, you know! (my doc assured us he does not own stock in EAS shakes, for example LOL)

    Hello from Canada..

It depends on the surgeon and nutritionist; they all have different rules. Our nutritionist bans it and being the curious sort I asked "WHY?" She said "It makes some people hungry". It does NOT make me hungry, I have unsweetened iced tea, and am doing fine!

    7 lbs shy...HELP!!

There are people who have posted here who did intentionally gain so they could be approved, and were glad they did it and never looked back. Honestly, if you want the band that badly, that 10 pounds can save you thousands of dollars. It is stupid, it is counter-intuitive, but it is insurance. If you don't honestly think you'd gain that much over the next year or so anyway, have you tried just dieting and exercising to lose? That way might work for you if you don't struggle to hold your weight. I know you'll decide what's best for you! I know what I'd do! LOL
