    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

I had my surgery on Valentine's Day [emoji3590] I'm officially at 270 as of this morning. I was at 309 when I went in for surgery. I want this damn weight to come off faster but I guess slow and steady wins the race. Its still funny to me being the fat person that doesn't eat anything. Obviously people who know I had surgery don't judge me about that but going to events and stuff with people I'm not familiar with and eating a couple bites of food while weighing 270 lbs is a funny image [emoji1787] Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  2. Yeah, I honestly struggled the most in the beginning of the journey (a bit before my initial consultation) and then extreme struggle right at the end (just weeks before my pre op diet) because of that constant fear that eating was over and done with forever. Yeah...not the case at all but damn does it harbor the food funeral. I honestly wish bariatric centers would offer more emphasis and support in that. I think a lot of people go into it believing surgery means no more enjoying food at all in any capacity...not the case. I had a lot of trouble with overeating a month before my surgery. I was working out like MAD so I didnt gain weight but I wanted to eat everything delicious because I believed that was my last chance. It's literally maybe a month to two months until you can eat relatively normal foods again and it goes by fast. I had my surgery in February and I'm already eating everything again accept bread, raw vegetables and refined sugars. I feel plenty satisfied and enjoy what I eat. One can probably argue all day how to see food post op and how that can benefit your weight loss and weight maintenance but im talking more so about realistic, day to day stuff. For some the all or nothing approach works but for most, it's okay to admit to yourself that you still "enjoy" food while also not letting it take over your life or your weight. I can't stress enough how temporary the extreme dieting is. It's not meant to last. No you can't overeat post op, but you likely won't want to anyway and you can still enjoy a variety foods just like before. When I needed to get back on the horse pre op, it helped to remind myself that it's not a goodbye forever from food, it's a goodbye forever to overeating. Its merely a "see you in a month or two" to solid foods and complex carbs. Lol Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. Just had a thought...before I didn't really care about this but now that I'm 3 months post OP today I kind of love that my surgery was on Valentine's Day. It kind of gives new meaning to that day for me. I was never a big fan of Valentine's day. I have a messy, less than perfect track record when it comes to dating so in all honesty, Valentine's day brought me a little bit of pain and anguish for all the bad romantic experiences I've had thus far in my life. But now, it's no longer about what went wrong for me, it's finally about what went right – and self-love. This was something I was desperately reaching toward for so long and I don't even know how I did it, it goes by so fast, I rose above the bullshit in my life and put myself first for once. I'm looking forward to Valentine's day next year, my surgeversary... not about what I lack or love or whatever but what I gained that day and how far it took me.

  4. Hey! I'm sorry you're going through that. I know how devastating that cycle is. You have to put some distance between you and the food. I am also in counseling and was pre op. That was the best piece of advice I received. If you know you're going to be tempted to buy fast food, don't bring your money with you or take a different route when you drive. Beyond that, try to work on the why component. Ask yourself why you want to binge. Try to understand how you're feeling the moment you want to binge, what those emotions are attached to and if you can write down or speak to someone about those feelings and their cause. This app called Brighter Bite really helped me conceptualize that and manage and tracked my binge eating cycles. It's also free and no in app purchases. It also offered advice on how to deal with those feelings of desperation and absolution that preceed a binge. Im not a mental health professional so my advice isn't clinical nor do I claim to know what your best option is, but as someone who binge ate regularly their whole life, I know these small steps can make a difference. It's not about perfection, it's about progress. Remember too that shame is not a motivator of real change. It's okay if you mess up, honor that and learn from your mistakes or believe you have the capacity to do better and get the life you deserve. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Screwed up the PreOp diet today

Lol I remember caving in one day in the middle of my pre op diet and ate half a bag of cheetos. Then I started spitting them out after chewing them because I NEEDED the taste in my mouth but felt so guilty swallowing it...turned out just fine! I got back on the diet and remembered why I was even doing it in the first place. Having a healthy distraction helps too and if you really need to chew on something have a sugar free popsicle or some ice. As long as you get back on the horse and keep your digestive system clean 2 days before surgery you're going to be fine. Remember it's also a lot easier to follow these crazy diets once you're bypassed/sleeved. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  6. I'm 3 months post op and that happened to me for a while month 2. It still happens some days but not nearly as often. I believe it's just the new digestive system and being so new post op you're in an extreme calorie deficit and your body still might be playing catch up so you get fatigued easily. Take your vitamins. Keep your protein and water intake in the green and eventually the sleepiness goes away. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. Congrats on reaching this stage! I found that isopure was pretty good when blended using a blender, a milk you like/tolerate, maybe some yogurt, ice and things like unsweetened cocoa powder, sugar free syrups or decaf espressos. You can make protein frappes so to speak by mixing up ingredients. In my liquid, puree and soft I did vanilla and caramel protein frappes using sugar free coffee syrups and decaf espresso. You can also mix isopure into things like yogurt and soup. Great way to get protein, 25 grams per serving and no taste. I found that post op premier and quest protein shakes were wayyyy to sweet. If I didn't blend my own shakes, I bought the chocolate ensure max because it has 30 grams and sorta kinda taste like chocolate milk. You can also blend that with ice and it makes it like a milkshake. The slim fast orange cream Low carb shake blended with ice is really yummy. Taste like fruity pebble milkshake. If you're sick of the sweet stuff, try broth make from bouillon cubes (more tasty than broth cartons). I've never had bone broth. I hear it's an acquired taste but supposedly some benefits to having it, maybe try mixing it into your regular broth for a full meaty flavor to differentiate from the sweet shakes. Anyway. That and sugar free popsicles got my through my liquid diet. It was nice to chew on something and I never want to see another popsicle again in my life LOL. I find that orange flavored popsicles caused some acid reflux but I had that pre op so it might be just me. Best of luck to you. The hardest part is getting through the first month after surgery but it goes by fast, you develop a routine and you see the scale go down so it's all worth it. I'm 3 months post op and back to regular eating. The only difference is I focus on protein, get full pretty fast and the weight actually comes off. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Before and After Photos

My eyes are bigger than my stomach... Didn't eat all day and thought you know I could eat a horse, not the case. Ended up eating 1.5 cocktail meatballs, a couple bites of snap pea, a bite of chickpea pasta and some of the shaved parmesean. Saving the rest for other meals. Got about 15 grams of protein in those couple of bites. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Weight loss starts when?

I went to the hospital at 309 and came home at like 315. It comes off fast after a couple of days to a week. Don't worry! All part of the journey. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    What's Your Food Nemesis?

Doritos and potato chips omg I could eat a whole family size bag before my surgery. My dietician and therapist want me to incorporate protein chips in small amounts so I am working on having a neutral relationship to chips. So far so good. I feel for the first time in my life theyre just chips, who cares? Have had no urge to overeat on them. I'm also so thankful I've never been into sugar because I haven't had real sugar since January. My dietician said I could try it on special occasions in small amounts but im afraid of dumping. Haven't experienced that yet and really don't want to. I had my bypass on Feb 14th. Food Before and After Photos

Poolside nachos. Homemade -2 Mini low carb street tortillas cut into triangles (toasted first in oven) -2.5 oz of vegetarian ground meat -2 oz of refried black beans -2 tablespoons of salsa con queso -1 tablespoon of shredded cheddar -1.5 tablespoons of lite sour cream -Spicy salsa -Fresh diced tomatoes -Pinch of lime over the whole thing Bake all of it together in the oven for 15 minutes on 275F First picture is before I ate, second is what I managed to eat. Was able to eat about 2.5 oz of it getting in 15 grams of protein. Soooo good and protein/fiber filled. The chips are buried under it haha but they exist, I promise! 12. My program doesn't allow raw vegetables (no salads) until 5 months post op, no bread products for 6 months (but other carbs are okay), and no alcohol for a year. Curious to learn A)when did you start eating/drinking these things post op and how did you handle it? B)what advice your program gave you about them? C) experience with your first salad? 13. Hey! I'm happy to report that after getting on extra strength stool softeners and extra water, I'm going regular again. I never thought I'd be happy to go to the bathroom yet here I am.. Anyway, I'm terrified of gallbladder attacks and getting my galbladder removed. Supposedly its common after weight loss surgery. I noticed that my stool is very light colored, like yellowish pale which I hear is a sign of bile issues but I also eat a lot of dairy, yogurt for breakfast, cheese for snacks, protein drinks and so on. Is this the first sign of gallbladder issues or just my new weird diet? Anyone have experience with this post op from gastric bypass? Thanks! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Warning, bathroom stuff and gallbladder

My surgery was Feb 14 so over a month. I'm glad to hear that, it's kind of a relief. I wasn't put on any meds for gallbladder stuff and never had issues prior to surgery with it but I heard it's common after. I asked my treatment team what if that happened and they didn't necessarily say its not likely and kind of just shrugged It off and said we'll cross that bridge if we get to it which kind of made me uneasy. So it's good to know the weird colors are normal in the beginning. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Before and After Photos

Yes, it yields a lot of servings. I made mine in two layers using 9 inch springform pans. I had I think 6 leftover slices after 4 people ate a serving. At that size, bariatric wise, ai could only have half a piece. Here's the cake before it was cut. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Before and After Photos

I followed this recipe: https://thebigmansworld.com/keto-birthday-cake-recipe/ Pro tip: once you have the batter together if it's chunky or not incorporated at all, put on a pair of food gloves and break it up manually with your hands so it's completely soft and pureed. I find it makes for a better crumb. I used vanilla bean paste and fresh vanilla beans instead of extract too. Flavor is much better. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Food Before and After Photos

Wanted to share my bariatric friendly birthday cake. I did a lil photoshoot with the leftover slices. I'm so proud of the cake. You literally can't tell there's only 2 net carbs per serving. Made with almond flour and a bit of coconut flour. I used swerve to sweeten it. It has eggs and butter of course and vanilla beans. I got lazy and bought a sugar free store bought frosting. I ordered keto Sprinkles online. Prior to surgery I was an avid baker and I'm a home chef so I wanted to challenge myself with this. It LITERALLY tasted like regular cake. My friends were so impressed. I sent the rest home with my friend who's husband is doing Low carb. I could only manage a couple bites on one slice but didn't make me sick or get stuck on anything and my nutritionist approved! glad I can still celebrate birthdays with cake and friends sans overeating sugary treats. 18. Will keep that in mind! Has anyone tried cooked brussel sprouts post op? I found an awesome recipe for almond flour protein crust with shaved brussel sprouts and cheese. I want to make it but wondering if brussel sprout baked in the oven is doable. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. Another weird but awesome NSV. I don't focus so much on food anymore. Like I can concentrate on other things. I still get hungry and think about what I'm gonna eat but I don't plan my day around eating specific meals and of course not operating anymore I'm never lethargic. Have had time and clarity to focus on my passion projects without getting distracted by overeating. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

  22. I don't smoke or do drugs/weed. I drank once a month pre-op.
  23. Thanks, everyone! I'm excited to have salads again. They were a go-to pre-op. My program isn't strict about carbs. My dietician allows healthy carbs and doesn't believe in eliminating foods, she just doesn't want me to dump or get sick. I eat potatoes, some grains, beans, and chickpeas on the regular with my protein. She said to enjoy a glass of wine after a year but funny enough I don't drink wine. Pre-op I never drank sweet stuff, only some beers and vodka/whiskey with soda water. I never really drank a lot but I'm young and a lot of my friends drink socially so it's difficult. I have all these trips planned with my friends in the next coming months and won't be able to drink anything on them which kind of makes me sad but I know it's part of the process. P.S. no worries about derailing the thread. Tell us about the date haha

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

I did but then I started taking them close to a meal and if I take it after a meal, I eat a teaspoon of very strong tasting hummus with it to get the taste out of my mouth then wash and brush because they are that awful. But really, food seemed to do the trick. If I take it on an empty stomach, not fun. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Yes! I totally agree also! I think the chaffles taste so gross because of the yolk AND they're usually overcooked. Overcooked yolk= fishy taste. The whites just give it a neutral base so when you add other stuff to it you really only get the eggs texture but none of that funk. That's why I like this recipe in particular. No egg taste.
