24 hours after gastric sleeve surgery - concerns
Candace76 replied to J&R's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was very week and tired the first 4 days, especially the first 2. I could barely keep my eyes open the rest of the day after the surgery. His sips should be really tiny at first, too. He might do better with room temp liquids at first, but I think some prefer slightly cooler drinks or warm broth temps at first. Wishing him a quick recovery & successful surgery. -
The closest to chewing on the full liquid diet are probably the sugar-free ice pops, jello & pudding. I am also allowed farina that is thinned out with milk and sugar-free yogurt. Have those foods helped at all, if you are allowed them? The chewy calcium citrate supplements might give you enough of the sensation to help. I know, I totally understand and just counting down the days until I can move to the soft food stage!

I'm not sure if Genepro will taste good in water, but I think some people add it to skim (fat free) milk. It is supposed to be flavorless, but there is a subtle taste to it. You can add it to sugarfree jello, too. -
Liquid phase 10 days post op
Candace76 replied to Jessica Williams's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think the fullness feeling from the restriction is supposed to kick in once you start eating solid food. The liquids apparently go through quickly. I also have had feelings of hunger (bad hunger pangs) right after surgery & a few times since, I asked my doctor and he said it is normal to feel that and it will get better. I wonder if it is also my brain interpreting other feelings (acid, healing, etc) as hunger. I am only about 12 days out, so there will be better answers from veteran sleevers. Wishing you all lots of luck with your healing & progress. -

I had my surgery a few days before you (currently on full liquid phase), and I agree it is hard to get them both in, especially that first week. I have been getting better at getting them in this second week, so it gets easier (at least until we have to start spacing out the water before and after meals). I try to drink my protein shakes between meals. So the first around 10 am and the second around 3pm or 8 pm. There were a few days were I couldn't stomach them, so on those days when that happened, I used Genepro and added 1/2 a serving to my soups or crystal light. Also sometimes th chocolate shakes can be overwhelming, so I mix 1/2 vanilla & 1/2 chocolate. If I get 2 shakes or 2 servings of Genepro in that is 60 g of protein. I have been also eating Oikos Triple Zero Yogurt (1/2 container w/ 7 g of protein). For me, water has been the bigger challenge every day. Like you said, there aren't enough hours in the day to get it all in! Drinking Crystal Light or other sugar free drinks instead of water for a drink or two a day also helps me. I have a time marked motivation cup filled with water and need to have it near me at all times. I am always behind on where I should be each hour. 🤦♀️Luckily, the 2 shakes take care of 16 oz of water, otherwise I wouldn't have made the 64 oz goal yet. I did set a timer on my phone through baritastic, but it doesn't seem to work on my phone. I think there are water drinking reminder apps, so I will need to try that next week when I start soft foods. I'm sorry you are getting cramping, when I drink too quickly, I feel it sometimes, too, but it has gotten better. Wishing you luck, and looking forward to seeing other tips for the water, too! Keep us posted if you find tips that work for you!😊 -
I'm sorry for the loss of your father, and challenging times you have gone through. You should be proud of yourself for taking the steps you already have to get back to where you want to be. You achieved your weight loss goal before, and can do it again! Wishing you luck in getting where you want to be.😊

I agree, the full liquid phase seems to be going very slowly. I had my sleeve the same day as your revision. I started full liquids on Thursday (29th) and don't move to soft stage until August 10th. Getting tired of broths & shakes, but knowing this is temporary makes it easier. Sometimes I even feel like I wouldn't want anything to eat anyway, those times makes it easier. Then other times I really want something other than what I can have. I am looking forward to that soft food stage! (No purée stage on my plan) Yesterday, I added Genepro to my Crystal Light and my soup (half serving of genepro in each), that way I only needed 1 protein shake. Do you, or anyone else have anything they did during full liquid that makes it easier or more interesting? We'll be on to a new phase before we know it, we just got to hang in there! Hoping everyone is doing well with their progress. 😊 (Scale isn't moving as much as I thought it would my first week🙄, but it's moving) -

Is there a video online for how to use your blood pressure monitor? Maybe even seeing another will help you use yours correctly. You could get error reading if it is not positioned correctly, if it is too loose or tight. Reread the instructions or see if there is a troubleshooting guide. Keep trying your doctor. Did he/she have an answering service? Do they have an after hours or emergency number? -

July 2021 Surgery People!

Hey July Surgery People! I got home yesterday and cannot believe how tired I have been since the surgery. I am usually able to function on little sleep, and I don't typically nap. This is a totally different level of tired than I have ever felt. That has been my biggest side-effect or symptoms after surgery. My surgery was actually an hour earlier than scheduled. Everyone was nice at the hospital. I woke up in the recovery room, but just wanted to sleep. I was brought up to my room about an hour after surgery. My husband stayed with me, but I all I did was sleep or respond with my eyes closed when he asked me anything. My first sips of water went down without pain, but I noticed if I took a bigger sip, I felt it going down. I did ok with broth and tea, but was not in the mood for anything. My incision sites were not painful, but my stomach felt like I had the worst hunger pangs ever. I also felt the gas that was pumped in my belly. Day 2, I felt a little less pain and was a little less sleepy. I was able to eat more broth than the day before. I was discharged around noon, and returned home to my little cuties. I did not want broth when I got home, but I had some sugar-free jello. My husband made the kids fish sticks and they smelled awful. I couldn't walk into the kitchen. Slept well over night. Day 3 (today), my parents came to help with the kids & I have really only wanted water and jello. I started vitamins & prilosec again. Stomach & incision pain is very mild. It is so weird that I feel hungry, but don't want anything. I took a big nap in the afternoon, so I still have very little energy. Tomorrow I start full liquid diet, so hopefully, I will get a little more energy & will be able to have things besides broth. So far, I can't complain, it hasn't been as bad as I prepared myself for. I hope it continues to go well. Wishing everyone well with their progress. 😊🥰 -

Magnesium citrate 😝😖 is so gross! I don't know if you all had to drink this, but YUCK! Well, at least that is done and I am less than 24 hours away! (Fyi-It is for bowel prep for surgery, if you were lucky enough to skip this step, or have not experienced it yet) -

Gastric sleeve bariatric cookbook
Candace76 replied to Lyndastuff's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Lynda, I was thinking you could get it in Michael's if you got a tub of meringue powder, but it is egg substitute, so it probably isn't what you need. I saw that egg white protein in the BariatricPal store, but it may be too large. I also saw some on Amazon. If you don't want to order it online and prefer to shop in person, perhaps GNC or a health food store. Hopefully, you find some! I was thinking of getting that (and also looked at some other cookbooks). Let us know if you make the recipe you wanted to try & how it turns out! -

Thanks for asking this, as I am also worried about when I have to make food for my family & possibly something different for me. I would love to hear what others have done or what they plan on trying. To get through the first 2 weeks after my surgery, I started cooking double size dinners & put half in freezer for my family to eat later. I think I may continue to do this when I cook, to cut down on some cooking time. During the soft food stage, I will try to use the crock pot & instant pot to make meats (& veggies) cooked in broth, like stews, etc. That way we can all eat it. When my family is having pasta with meat sauce, I will try to use turkey instead of beef for all of us, and make spiral zucchini for me. -

My recommended plan was similar to MistySkye's during the full liquid stage. I think most fruits & veggies aren't recommended yet (on my plan anyway), until purée or soft food stage, and they are to be cooked well. I think it is ok if it is in a broth, soup (strained), or tomato juice & soup, though. I was also told to have low-fat dairy/skim milk at first (& unsweetened soy & almond milk) , so it is easier to tolerate. I hope to include green smoothies (I guess in soft food stage?), yours sounded good! Hopefully, you can find a tweak to make it go down easier for now. Maybe simplify it & gradually add ingredients back slowly to see what you can tolerate.
