  1. I recently moved to soft foods, but noticed I wasn’t eating many carbs each day (less than 30 grams). Today I’ve had 10 grams. While I’m not looking to carb load, some carbs are healthy and needed (my program recommends less than 100 each day). I’m just under three weeks post-op. Where did everyone get their carbs early on?

    Good Sources of Carbs

    Very helpful, thanks!

    Pork and Ground Beef

I’m a pescatarian so I eat a lot of plant-based meat. Impossible is my favorite but Beyond is improving. Gardein has solid options also. You have to be mindful of your portion sizes because they can be high in fat. Seitan is super high protein and quite delicious.

    What was your tipping point?

    Best of luck!

    No Pre Op Diet Ordered?

Weird, my BMI was less than 50 and I had to do one. Like all things bariatric, advice differs between surgeons.

    Coffee

The concern after surgery is dehydration, but that really only occurs when you have several cups a day. I would just make sure you’re getting enough fluids outside of coffee, so adding in a cup of water throughout the day to offset the possible dehydration. I’m on week three post-op and I can say the caffeine hits me a little more strongly so you may not need your usual 3 to 4 cups.

    When/How to buy new clothes

I wear leggings and knits! There’s no way around buying new clothes. I buy then donate to Dress for Success as they always need clothing of all sizes.

    Bypass saggy skin

I have been getting botox and fillers for years (I’m 40). I’m two weeks post op and already have a plan! Lower face lift, microneedling, veneers (fresh white teeth help with the youthful look), and skin tightening on my neck if needed. As someone who is hyper-focused on skincare, no cream will tighten skin. Go for a laser treatment…put your money to good use! Good luck!

    Sucralose

I wasn’t told that either. Very interesting the differing advice across doctors and nutritionists.

Follow up to my restaurant post

Every paying customer deserves a respectful and pleasant experience. Yes, it’s Red Robin, but that doesn’t mean a server should be unprofessional.

    Favorite drinks

Hint is great! I never drank sugary drinks before surgery and Hint has no sugar, carbs, sodium, etc. I highly recommend!

    Gummy multivitamin?

My vitamins don’t bother me, but we were told no gummies. Some people use Flintstone chewables but they’re a bit lacking in daily values. Try BariatricAdvantage or Celebrate Vitamins.

We also take calcium citrate, a separate Vitamin D, and B Complex 50, so that’s likely the reason two standard multivitamins aren’t necessary.
  14. I hope you have a supportive surgical team. I’m in the pureed phase (post-VSG) and only slightly hungry. But…this procedure requires significant mind and body changes. We have to follow our plans (I’m on four ounces at this point) and seek guidance from our medical teams if we’re struggling. This tool is amazing if we use it as just that: a tool to assist us with making a lifestyle change. I encourage you to reach out to your nutritionist and bariatric therapist to sort through these challenges. You can do this, one day at a time!
  15. I’m sorry you’re struggling with these very fast changes. I hope you’re feeling supported in therapy or a strong support system.

    Vitamins

Who told you that? My program recommends specific supplements (Costco brand is one) and only one per day is recommended. It may be different for VSG vs RNY.
  17. Likely just a yeast infection, one dose of Diflucan is likely the treatment.

    Struggling! Motivation needed please :)

You lost 55 pounds in six weeks (down 125 pounds total) and you’re questioning your decision? That’s an amazing weight loss already! Remember, the less you weigh, the slower the weight comes off. I definitely understand being obsessed with the scale but I encourage you to focus on NSVs also. And think about long-term goals. I know it’s going to take me about a year to lose 115 pounds, so I am taking it day by day. I recommend working with a bariatric therapist or seeking behavioral strategies from Overeaters Anonymous or a mindful eating program to learn to stop eating when full. It can be really tough especially when you love the food you’re eating. But, this is a journey and a battle and we have so many resources to help us. Good luck!

    Coffee on pre op diet

I was allowed black coffee up until two hours before surgery. No issues.

Wasn't sure who else to ask ...

Here’s the thing: the pre-op diet also serves as mental prep for after surgery. While your stomach is healing, you have to adhere to your surgeon’s instructions perfectly. Weeks or months of liquid/pureed/soft foods.

Puréed food stage: what are the recipe favourites?

Does anyone puree their ricotta bake? It’s already in a pretty smooth form like apple sauce.

    Salt aside, why no seasoning?
