Hello and welcome to the forum. I am 5 weeks post op, and my best advice is to take it slow with your diet and follow your doctor’s progression plan. Also, I thought after 2 weeks, I would be fully recovered and able to workout and move on with my life, but that has not been the case for me. I went to the gym for the first time this morning and was only able to walk a mile and do a few reps of arm exercises with weights. I recently spoke with my doctor, and she said it could take 8 weeks to find your energy and strength again. I wish I had known that so I wouldn’t have felt like such a baby the past few weeks because I was so tired. Be gentle with yourself and take it easy to allow your body the chance to heal! I look forward to to hearing how you are doing in a few weeks! -

I have always been allowed to use straws. They gave me a straw in the hospital! LOL! I don’t have any trouble with gas using a straw. -

I agree—I feel like a blood hound now—I smell everything so keenly—sometimes, it is a nightmare! Yes, my tastes have changed, too. I don’t like what I used to like—a lot of things just taste sour to me! Maybe we will return to “normal” in a few months! LOL! -

I am glad to hear that you are doing well. I am on week 5 post op and still introducing foods back into my diet—I don’t have carte blanche the way you do, though! I think it is interesting how doctors’ offices are so different. This week I am on shaved deli meat, cheese, and turkey chili, and melba toast/saltines. LOL! I agree with you on taking it slow and trying one food at a time. Eggs did not bother me at first, but now they do. I had to take anti-nausea meds for the first time since week one because of a scrambled egg! I have also found that certain foods make me gag—yogurt, cottage cheese, and fish! I am so disappointed in losing 4 quality means of protein because they just are not palatable! I also find that I can’t eat much. I certainly can’t drink a whole protein shake in one sitting—I have to drink 1/2 in the am and the other 1/2 in the pm. I find I struggle with getting enough protein. It is my #1 goal right now—get 80 grams of protein a day! I am barely getting 50. I have lost 31 lbs since the beginning and 20 lbs since surgery. I go for my 6 week check-up next week. I am so excited for next week because fruits and vegetables return. I cannot wait! I don’t reach any food I want until Week 12! I am still tired—I try to walk every day, but I haven’t made it to the gym yet. That is my 2nd goal—go to gym 3x a week. All in all—I am doing well. Still learning how to navigate Tiny Tummy, but so much happier when I look in the mirror! One more pound, and I will be in the 180s! 31lbs down and 50 to go, but my first small weight goal is 185! -

I did. I had a bypass, and I threw up for 2 days—I couldn’t move—I was so sick. It took 3 different anti-nausea meds before I could sip water. I stayed on the nausea meds for a week, and I found popsicles helped me drink more than sipping water. The popsicles were easier to take in small amounts of liquid. I eventually had to go back for IV fluids because I had such a hard time getting liquids in—if you are still not well in a week, I highly recommend the IV fluids. Weeks one and 2 were hard for me, but week 3 was great! I am now on week 4 and able to keep pureed food down in small amounts! Hang in there—take your meds and sleep! Don’t push yourself! I hope you feel better! -

I always think you should listen to your body—pain is an indication that you need to take it easy for a few days. I am 23 days post op, and I tried playing golf on Monday—it hurt so bad, and It exhausted me. I am going to give it a few more weeks before I try again. I am not an expert on depression, so I don’t want to give you advice on that—except I will say, it seems to be common in bariatric patients. If it doesn’t go away or gets worse—call your doctor. In any case, take it easy and don’t be too hard on yourself! -

Thank you! I am feeling much better—still negotiating what pureed food agrees with my pouch and which ones cause problems. Eggs don’t bother me, but hot cereal does—weird, uh? I am still having trouble getting enough protein. I am so sick of protein shakes—they make me gag! How are you doing? -

Give yourself a little time—you are still swollen from the surgery, and I am sure you are still holding gas. At my two week Post-op—I lost 15 lbs from my surgery day—it will happen. I was brain foggy for a good 10 days. I still can’t read for long periods of time. (I am almost 3 weeks post-op). The 2nd week is better but not ideal—I didn’t feel “myself” until this past Tuesday. Hang in there—it will get better every day! 🥰 -

My first two weeks post-op were not great. I struggled with fluids, intermittent gas, pain from my gut and incisions, and unbelievable fatigue. I think what you are going through is normal—you are only 5 days post-op. Keep trying to drink tiny sips, walk around the house, and nap. If you keep having pain though, call your doctor. I hope you feel better soon! P. S.—week 3 is much better! 😉 -

Hey—I had my surgery May 3rd, too. I am a university professor, so I scheduled mine to coincide with when I am off contract, but I would not have wanted to go back to work this week. At my 2 week post-op appointment, my doctor was concerned with my fatigue and weakness. They sent me to get fluids and vitamins yesterday at the hospital. i was so mad to be readmitted for the day, but honestly, I feel a thousand percent better. I have more energy and can tolerate pureed food now. I say take the whole month, but if you need a boost then talk to your doctor about fluids—it really gave me the boost I needed to just feel “normal” again! -

Hang in there! I am two weeks post op today, and I am still tired and not able to do as much as I want. I agree—this is very mentally and physically challenging—you aren’t alone! Sending you positive thoughts! -

I am 10 days post op. The first week was challenging for me me because if nausea, but I am doing much better. I am still on liquids, but I start pureed foods this weekend—I have never been so excited for mashed potatoes! I am still tired and a little “weak” but I am only getting around 300 -400 calories a day. I got on the scale today, and I was shocked that I have lost 25 lbs since my pre-op liquid diet weight!! I am back in the 100s—overjoyed that I finally feel this was worth it! 🥰
